Christmas Markets in Germany Near the Border in 2026: From Pirna to Passau

TL;DRThe nearest major destination is the Canalettomarkt in Pirna, running this year from November 24 to December 30, 2026, with a short Christmas break. From the Czech border you can reach Pirna by car in about forty minutes, or take direct trains along the Elbe. Entrance to Saxon city markets is usually free; only Königstein fortress requires a paid ticket. For a weekend stay, we recommend accommodation in Pirna, from where you can easily visit the fortress advent market or nearby Dresden.

When the first Advent lights come on in the early evening and the cold air fills with the scent of warm mulled wine, towns just across the border take on a different, festive atmosphere in December. Saxon and Bavarian historic centers offer a pleasant winter backdrop that you can visit from neighboring countries for just an afternoon. If you’d like a broader overview from across Germany, explore our comprehensive guide to Christmas markets in Germany, where you’ll find more distant cities as well.

Border-region Christmas markets build on local traditions that allow you to enjoy a winter evening in peace without unnecessary rush. Historic centers offer craft stalls, regional specialties, and hot mulled wine or non-alcoholic punch. Many towns are located so close to border crossings that they’re perfect for a quick after-work visit or a weekend trip.

In this guide, we’ve selected twelve Christmas market destinations in Saxon Switzerland, Upper Lusatia, the Ore Mountains, and Bavaria, all connected by easy accessibility. You’ll learn the dates for the 2026 season, details about parking, train connections, and tips on the miners’ parades for which the Saxon border region is famous. You can plan your winter excursion exactly according to how much time you have available.

Distances from the state border are short for the selected locations, so you can reach the markets quickly. Seiffen is only about 3 km from the Deutschneudorf-Brandov crossing, Zittau is 6 km from Hrádek nad Nisou, Marienberg is 12 km from Hora Svatého Šebestiána, and Königstein fortress is approximately 16 km from Hřensko. The farthest destination in our selection is Bavarian Passau, which takes about three hours to reach from the Czech border.

Where to Stay for the Weekend

If you’re planning to turn your Christmas market visit into a weekend trip, it makes sense to choose accommodation based on which region appeals to you most. In the Saxon Switzerland area (Pirna, Bad Schandau, Königstein), a weekend combination of the Pirna market, Königstein fortress visit, and a trip to Dresden makes perfect sense. You can also conveniently reach this area by train from Ústí nad Labem, so you can manage the journey without a car.

In the Upper Lusatia region, you can combine Zittau, Görlitz, and Bautzen in one weekend, as all three markets are within 60 km of each other. A particularly good time to visit is the weekend of December 11–13, 2026, when the cross-border Brückenadvent takes place in Görlitz.

The Ore Mountains area around Annaberg, Marienberg, and Seiffen suits travelers who want to experience weekends with Bergparaden. These ceremonial parades take place in the region on November 28, December 12–13, and December 20, 2026, so you can time your accommodation booking accordingly.

For overnight stays in these regions, you can use the following hotels:

  • Romantik Hotel Deutsches Haus: The hotel is located at Niedere Burgstraße 2 in the historic center (Altstadt) of Pirna, where the Christmas market itself takes place.
  • Pirn’scher Hof: This hotel garni is located in Pirna at Am Markt 4, right on the square where the Canalettomarkt is held.
  • Hotel Sonne: You’ll find this hotel in Zittau at Markt 9, directly on the market square.
  • Hotel Chemnitzer Hof: The hotel is located at Theaterplatz 4 in Chemnitz.
  • Hotel Weißes Roß: This hotel is located at Annaberger Straße 12 in Marienberg.

💡 On this map you can compare what’s available — you’ll immediately see how much the price changes a few blocks away.

Pirna: Canalettomarkt Just Beyond Děčín

Thanks to its location close to the border, the town of Pirna represents perhaps the most natural gateway to Saxon Advent. The market is called Canalettomarkt, and the historic center around the town hall feels like a backdrop from Canaletto’s paintings. In the evening, all you need to do is slow down and stroll under the lights between the stalls.

The market has been held in Pirna since 2013 and takes place right on the central Marktplatz square around the town hall. The square itself is closed to cars during the market, so you can move between the stalls in peace without worrying about passing traffic.

Dates and Opening Hours

The Advent market in Pirna begins on Tuesday November 24 and runs until December 23, 2026. What’s nice is that Canalettomarkt doesn’t end with Christmas Eve, making it worthwhile even for those who don’t manage to visit before the holidays. After a short Christmas break, when the market is closed from December 24 to 26, the stalls on the square reopen from December 27 to 30, 2026.

Opening hours are divided by day of the week to accommodate afternoon and evening visits. Monday through Thursday the market is open from 11:00 to 19:00, on Friday and Saturday hours extend from 11:00 to 21:00, and on Sunday the market operates between 11:00 and 20:00. Some stalls on the square also open voluntarily as early as 10:00 and stay open later in the evening.

By Train from Ústí and Parking

Getting to Pirna is quick and gives you a choice between car and rail. If you drive from Ústí nad Labem (on the Czech side) via the D8 motorway and the connecting German A17, you’re looking at a route of 53 km that takes about 40 minutes. Consider the stated time and distance as a rough estimate without accounting for traffic, so we recommend you check the route before departure using Mapy.cz or Google Maps.

Since Marktplatz square itself is closed to vehicles during Advent, it’s best to head straight to one of three parking garages in Pirna:

  • Parkhaus Altstadt (Grohmannstraße 1, P1): Located closest to the market, operates 24/7, and costs €1.50 per 45 minutes, with a daily maximum of €11 per day (prices as of October 2026).
  • Parkhaus Stadtmitte (Ernst-Thälmann-Platz 2, P5): This is the largest parking garage with 510 spaces and entrance from Robert-Koch-Straße, open from 4:30 to 20:00 (exit always possible) for €1.20 per hour and a maximum of €10 per day.
  • Parkhaus Am Steinplatz (P3): Located by the Elbe, operates from 5:30 to 21:00, and parking costs €1 per 45 minutes with a daily cap of €11 per day.

If you don’t want to bother looking for a parking space and would enjoy a mulled wine, head to Pirna by rail instead. Direct regional express trains (RE) run from Ústí and Děčín via Bad Schandau to Pirna and Dresden. On the German side, they’re complemented by S-Bahn S1, which also stops in Königstein. Pirna’s train station is just a few minutes’ walk from the market, so after getting off the train you’ll reach the town hall without complicated navigation.

Lighting Concept and Connections with the Surrounding Area

A distinctive feature that makes Canalettomarkt stand out in December is its lighting concept and projections on the town hall. When darkness falls over the city, the historic building in the middle of Marktplatz square lights up with a projection that completes the evening backdrop of the entire space. It’s worth planning your arrival in Pirna to stay at least until dusk, when this illumination on the town hall really shines.

💡 Tip: Thanks to the railway line along the Elbe, you can combine Pirna, Königstein fortress, and Dresden’s Striezelmarkt in one day on an Advent Saturday or Sunday by train from Ústí nad Labem or Děčín. For details about the Saxon capital, check out our guide to Christmas markets in Dresden.

Königstein Fortress: Market Only on Advent Weekends

In the Saxon Switzerland region lies Königstein fortress, which hosts a Historisch-romantischer Weihnachtsmarkt during the pre-Christmas season. Unlike city markets, this market doesn’t operate on weekdays but opens only on Advent weekends, on Saturdays and Sundays. For 2026, the dates fall on the weekends of November 28-29, December 5-6, December 12-13, and December 19-20.

The market itself takes place on the fortress plateau, which you can reach only on foot or by elevator. The Advent program includes Kasematten-Weihnacht in the underground and an installation called SterneDom featuring Herrnhut stars. Visitors to the fortress can also look forward to puppet theater and a live nativity scene.

When planning your trip, keep in mind that tickets for Königstein are sold exclusively online, so you need to arrange the purchase in advance through the internet. Two types of tickets are available: Tagesticket allows entry anytime between 9:00 and 18:00, while the cheaper Sparpreisticket is valid only for morning arrival in the window from 9:00 to 11:00. In the 2026 ticket shop, Tagesticket costs €17 for an adult, €13 for reduced admission, and €42 for a family. Check the exact categories before purchase in the fortress e-shop at tickets.festung-koenigstein.de.

💡 Tip: After a winter walk, you can combine your trip to Königstein fortress with relaxation at Toskana Therme Bad Schandau spa, which operates year-round. Just verify opening hours around the holidays in advance, as according to the tourist portal it’s usually closed on December 24 and 31.

Upper Lusatia: Zittau, Görlitz, and Bautzen

Upper Lusatia offers a trio of towns that are quickly accessible from the Czech side, and each approaches Advent a little differently. Thanks to the short distances, you can choose just one town for an afternoon, or connect them into a longer weekend trip. You’ll find the exact opening times for individual markets in the comprehensive table at the beginning of the article.

Zittau

Zittau hosts Zittauer Weihnachtsmarkt mit Lichterfest, which runs for just 9 days from December 5 to 13, 2026. You’ll find stalls in the historic center in the Markt and Rathausplatz area; the town hasn’t yet published the exact layout for 2026.

On the very first day of the market, Saturday December 5, 2026, the town will hold Lichterfest, during which shops in town stay open by candlelight from 16:00. On the second weekend of December 12-13, shops in the center remain open until 18:00 and the market offers regional specialties, crafts, and a cultural program whose detailed schedule the town will announce later. For more information, check out our separate article on Christmas markets in Zittau, and you can easily combine your visit with the Czech side of the border covered in the article about Christmas markets in Liberec.

Görlitz and Brückenadvent

Görlitz holds its Schlesischer Christkindelmarkt zu Görlitz from December 4 to 20, 2026, taking place in the Altstadt section on Untermarkt square and its surroundings. This market became the winner of MDR testing in 2016 and 2019 and offers visitors a live nativity scene and the Bethlehemshof space.

The Altstadt also features a romantic ice rink that operates for an extended period from November 20, 2026 until January 3, 2027. A special event is Brückenadvent from December 11 to 13, 2026, when the Christmas market expands across the Altstadtbrücke bridge into Polish Zgorzelec.

Bautzen: Wenceslas Market

In Bautzen, the 643rd Bautzener Wenzelsmarkt takes place from November 27 to December 22, 2026. This Wenceslas Market bears the name of Czech King Wenceslas IV, who granted the town market rights in 1384 according to the chronicles.

The stalls spread along a route through Hauptmarkt, Reichenstraße, Kornmarkt, and onto Museumsvorplatz. Here visitors will find about 80 vendors where you can buy Herrnhut stars, pyramids, and hot regional mulled wine.

💡 Tip: You can combine a visit to Zittau with a ride on the narrow-gauge railway to Oybin, or on the weekend of December 11-13 connect it with a trip to Görlitz for Brückenadvent.

Ore Mountains: Marienberg, Chemnitz, Freiberg, Annaberg, and Seiffen

The Saxon Ore Mountains are closely linked with mining tradition during Advent, which you’ll encounter at almost every turn. You’ll find the opening hours of all five markets in the table above; here we’ll walk through them one by one, starting with the parade calendar.

Bergparades 2026: Calendar

The major attraction of Ore Mountains towns is the Bergparade, a ceremonial miners’ parade in which uniformed miners and musicians march. These parades take place only on selected days and times, so it’s worth planning your trip according to the 2026 calendar:

  • Saturday, November 28, 2026 (Chemnitz): Grand Bergparade with approximately 1,000 uniformed miners and musicians participating.
  • Saturday, November 28, 2026 at 9:30 AM (Seiffen): Morning small Bergparade.
  • Saturday, December 5, 2026 (Freiberg): Bergparade im Fackelschein, a miners’ parade with torches.
  • Saturday, December 5, 2026 at 5:00 PM (Seiffen): Evening light procession called Lichterzug.
  • Saturday, December 12, 2026 at 3:30 PM (Seiffen): Afternoon Grand Bergparade.
  • Sunday, December 13, 2026 at 2:00 PM (Marienberg): Grand Bergparade held on the third Sunday of Advent.
  • Sunday, December 20, 2026 at 1:30 PM (Annaberg-Buchholz): Grand Bergparade on the fourth Sunday of Advent.

Marienberg

In Marienberg, the Christmas market runs from November 25 to December 20, 2026 on Marktplatz square in front of the town hall (Markt 1), with the opening ceremony taking place on Wednesday, November 25 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. You’ll find around 35 stalls on the square, where Santa arrives daily at 4:00 PM, and from November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027, there’s also an ice rink called Eisarena. On Saturday, December 12 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, the town hosts an event called Offene Höfe im Advent, and on Sunday, December 13, the Grand Bergparade follows, which you can read more about in our article on Christmas markets in Marienberg.

Chemnitz

The Chemnitzer Weihnachtsmarkt takes place from November 27 to December 23, 2026 around the town hall (Markt, Neumarkt) and features over 200 stalls. You’ll see a twelve-meter five-tier pyramid from 1986, an Ore Mountains Schwibbogen measuring 5 × 2 meters at Am Rathaus street, and a music box with a 4.40-meter diameter. There’s a Kinderland zone, a Ferris wheel, and Santa daily at 5:00 PM on the stage by the town hall. More details can be found in our guide to Christmas markets in Chemnitz.

Freiberg

The Freiberger Christmarkt runs from November 24 to December 22, 2026 in the historic center, which the town calls the heart of the silver city (“im Herzen der Silberstadt”). The market bears the designation “Original bergmännisch” (miners’ market) and offers around 95 stalls, dominated by a nine-meter pyramid. In addition to the Saturday torch parade on December 5, the program also includes Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in the cathedral.

Annaberg and Seiffen

The Annaberger Weihnachtsmarkt on Marktplatz square in Annaberg-Buchholz runs from November 27 to December 23, 2026 and on Sunday, December 20 is complemented by the Grand Bergparade, which is covered in our article on Christmas markets in Annaberg. In Kurort Seiffen, Seiffener Weihnacht takes place from November 27 to December 20, 2026 in the center of the village around the Bergkirche church and is only about 3 km from the border. You’ll find more in our guide to Christmas markets in Seiffen.

💡 Tip: If you want to experience two Ore Mountains markets during one weekend, combine a Saturday visit to Seiffen on December 12 and 13, 2026 with a Sunday trip to Marienberg.

Meissen: 2026 Dates Not Yet Announced

In Meissen, the Meißner Weihnacht market takes place during Advent, filling Markt square and the adjacent streets. When planning your trip, however, you need to keep in mind that the organizer has not yet announced the official dates for 2026, so the exact dates for this winter are still to come.

For orientation, last year’s edition can serve as a guide, because in 2025 the market ran from November 24 to December 24, 2025, and you can find last year’s opening hours in the table above. Last year the market consisted of around 40 stalls, and attractions included mulled wine from Meissen vineyards and an advent calendar on the town hall.

Bavarian Side: Passau

The only representative of the Bavarian border region in our overview is Passau, where the Passauer Christkindlmarkt am Dom takes place from November 24 to December 22, 2026. The stalls stand on Domplatz square in front of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, so the main attraction is the backdrop of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the middle of old Passau.

On the organizer’s website you’ll find not only the market itself but also the Krippenweg (nativity scene trail). If you enjoy longer Advent trips, you can explore our articles on Christmas markets in Berlin or our overview of the best Christmas markets in Europe.

How to Get There and Where to Park

Transportation to Advent markets across the border depends mainly on which part of the region you’re traveling from and whether you prefer your own car or public transport. Below you’ll find an overview of specific routes by area as well as practical information on rail and parking.

By Car by Region

All distances and driving times mentioned represent approximate estimates without traffic, so we recommend checking the route in navigation apps before your trip. To the Saxon Switzerland and Elbe region (Königstein, Pirna, Meissen), the route to Pirna and Meissen leads via D8 and A17 motorways, while to Königstein the route follows the Elbe through Hřensko (32 km from Děčín).

If you’re heading to Upper Lusatia (Zittau, Görlitz, Bautzen), the route runs through Hrádek nad Nisou from Liberec, from where it’s 26 km to Zittau and 55 km to Görlitz. To the Ore Mountains (Marienberg, Chemnitz, Annaberg, Seiffen, Freiberg), the route goes through Hora Svatého Šebestiána from Chomutov (35 km to Marienberg), or from Teplice through Cínovec (Freiberg 48 km from the border), while to Passau the route runs approximately 221 km via Strakonice and Strážný.

By Train Without a Car

Rail travel represents perhaps the most comfortable way to avoid searching for parking spaces in city centers during winter. To Pirna and Königstein, you can use the same line running toward Dresden, served by RE trains and the S-Bahn S1 line (the S1 line stops directly in Königstein, from where you can reach the fortress on foot or by elevator, while in Pirna the station is a few minutes’ walk from the market).

To Zittau, you can take direct Trilex trains on lines L7 and RE2, with an approximate journey time of around 30 minutes. Check specific departure times before your trip in the DB Navigator or Můj vlak apps. To Marienberg, on the other hand, there is no train connection and you must go by car, or alternatively you can use one-day bus tours that travel agencies organize to many border towns.

Parking

We’ve covered the options and prices of three parking garages in Pirna directly in the chapter on Canalettomarkt, where you can choose parking according to location. In Zittau, you can park in the center for €1.20 per hour (October 2026 price list), while directly in the Markt and Rathausplatz area the rate is €2 per hour (charged Monday to Friday 9:00 AM–6:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM–1:00 PM), as stated on the city website zittau.de.

If you’re driving to the Ore Mountains, in Chemnitz you can use zone II, where you’ll pay a maximum of €2.50 per day (October 2026 price list). This rate applies Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM according to the website chemnitz.de.
