Here, gifts aren’t brought by Santa Claus, but by Ježíšek (Baby Jesus), and that happens on the evening of December 24 after Christmas Eve dinner. And what does he look like? Nobody knows – he’s never depicted, which adds the right mysterious atmosphere to the evening. Everything also starts as early as December 5, when St. Nicholas visits children accompanied by an angel and a devil. In December, an Advent wreath with four candles must grace the table, and cherry branches called Barborky are placed in vases, cut on December 4 so they beautifully bloom by Christmas.
From late November, households fill with the aroma of baking Christmas cookies. Vanilla crescents, linzer cookies, or wasp nests are typically prepared, and it’s not unusual for more than ten different varieties to gather on the table. For breakfast on Christmas Eve, braided vánočka (Christmas bread) is often sliced. The Christmas Eve dinner itself is incomplete without fish soup and fried carp with potato salad. It’s because of the carp that tubs of live fish appear on the streets a few days before Christmas, which tends to be quite a shocking sight for tourists. And whoever manages to fast all Christmas Eve day will supposedly see a golden piglet in the evening.
Christmas here also includes various family fortune-telling traditions. After dinner, an apple is cut open (a star shape means health, a cross means illness), walnut shell boats are floated in water, and unmarried girls throw a shoe toward the door to find out if they’ll marry within the year. Pouring molten lead used to be a custom, but today it’s replaced with safer wax or tin due to toxicity. The magical Christmas Eve often ends with the traditional midnight mass.
An interesting fact is the history of Christmas trees in town squares. The very first one in Czechia was lit on December 13, 1924 in Brno at Freedom Square. The initiator was writer Rudolf Těsnohlídek, who a few years earlier had found a frozen little girl in the forest. The proceeds from the collection under the tree went to the Dagmar children’s home.
