Murano and Burano, Italy: A 2026 Day Trip from Venice

The colorful houses on Burano look as if their owners got together and decided that grey weather simply wouldn’t stand a chance. On Murano, it’s easy to get stuck admiring a shop window full of glass and wondering whether that delicate souvenir will survive the journey home. Both islands are wonderful reasons to get out on the water from Venice, but I wouldn’t try to squeeze them in between a morning at the Doge’s Palace and an afternoon flight.

I’d set aside a full day for Murano and Burano. You can get there by public boat, visit the glass or lace museum, and take a longer break beside a canal on Burano. This guide explains how to choose your transport, divide your time, and decide whether to spend just the day on the islands or stay overnight.

TL;DR

  • Murano is all about glass, while Burano is known for its colorful houses and lace. If you only have a few hours, choose the island that appeals to you most.
  • Set aside a full day for both islands. Allow time to reach the departure point, wait for boats, and travel between stops.
  • ACTV line 12 connects Fondamente Nove, Murano Faro, and Burano. Check the latest timetable and boarding point before you set off.
  • When checked in September 2026, a standard 75-minute ACTV ticket cost €9.50, while a 24-hour ticket cost €25. Three separate tickets cost more than the day pass.
  • The Lace Museum is closed on Mondays. Check the day of the week before planning a museum visit, not just the weather.
  • Staying overnight on an island is different from staying in Venice. You’ll need to travel by boat to reach the sights in the historic center.

Murano and Burano, Italy: Which Island Should You Choose?

Murano and Burano are often included in the same excursion, but visiting them isn’t the same experience twice. I’d choose Murano for its glassmaking heritage and museum, and Burano for a stroll among colorful houses, its lace, and the feel of a smaller island. Both have canals, bridges, businesses, and ordinary homes where local residents live.

If you have just one full day in Venice, I’d think carefully about whether to visit the islands at all. St. Mark’s Square, the lanes of Cannaregio, and a break beside a canal can easily fill your day. I’d add this trip to a longer stay or save it for a return visit. Our Venice guide will help you plan your time in the city itself.

For a half-day trip, I’d pick one island and one main activity. On Murano, visit the museum or watch a glassmaking demonstration; on Burano, take a walk and perhaps visit the Lace Museum. Once you add a long lunch, shopping, and another island, calling it a half-day is no longer quite accurate.

How to Get to Murano and Burano by Public Boat

A Venetian vaporetto is a public passenger boat, the local equivalent of a bus. It isn’t a gondola or a private water taxi. When planning your journey, look for ACTV services and the exact name of your stop. Searching for “Murano” alone isn’t enough, as the island has several boat stops.

Line 12 is the key route if you want to visit both islands. You can find its route in the latest ACTV timetables. It connects Fondamente Nove in Venice with Murano Faro and Burano, among other stops. If you get off at a different stop on Murano, allow time to walk to the departure point for Burano. You can also check the location of the boarding points on the operator’s maps.

To give you an idea of journey times, a boat in the line 12 timetable valid from April 22, 2026 leaves Fondamente Nove at 10:00, reaches Murano Faro in nine minutes, and arrives in Burano at 10:41. For this service, the Murano Faro–Burano leg takes 30 minutes from its departure from Murano. Those are sailing times; allow separately for waiting and walking across the island.

First, check the map for a route from your accommodation to Fondamente Nove. If you’re staying on the other side of Venice, another boat connection to Murano may be more convenient. Choose the exact route based on your starting point and travel date, as services and temporary changes can vary.

Buy and validate your ticket as instructed by ACTV before boarding. At the stop, check the direction, destinations, and display. Two boats with the same line number don’t necessarily leave from neighboring piers for the same destination. If you’re traveling with children or suitcases, allow extra time, and don’t plan activities down to the minute when it’s busy.

For the return journey, I’d choose a boat that leaves you with plenty of time, especially if you have a train to catch, a paid tour, or a dinner reservation. You’ll enjoy the lagoon much more if every landing doesn’t turn into a speed test to get off the boat. 😅

Vaporetto Prices and When a Day Pass Is Worth It

When checked on September 26, 2026, the official AVM fare list showed a standard 75-minute Rete Unica ticket for €9.50 and a 24-hour ticket for €25. These are the listed fares, so check the current price before you travel.

If you spend longer on each island and need three separate 75-minute tickets, you’ll pay €28.50, making the 24-hour ticket cheaper for the island trip alone. You can also use it for other eligible services while it’s valid. This comparison applies to the standard fares listed, not individual discounts.

Before buying, check which routes are covered by the ticket you’ve chosen. Airport boat services aren’t automatically included in the same ticket, and private water taxis aren’t covered either. Also, don’t confuse a 24-hour ticket with unlimited travel across any two calendar days.

A multi-day pass may work out better for your whole stay. Add up the journeys you actually plan to take and compare them with the current options. There’s no need to buy a more expensive transport package just because you feel you have to travel by boat all the time in Venice. Some of the loveliest walks are on foot.

What to See on the Islands and How Much Time to Allow

Think of the itinerary below as a suggestion for a day that doesn’t involve rushing to see every attraction. Start with the opening hours of the museums and workshops you really want to visit, then keep the rest of your plans flexible. You can spend much longer admiring the glass and colorful lanes than you might expect when looking at a map.

Murano: The Glass Museum and a Canal Walk

I’d set aside time for the Museo del Vetro if you’re interested in glassmaking beyond choosing a souvenir. The museum provides context you won’t get from a shop window. Its official website has information about current exhibitions and other activities, such as courses and themed events.

When checked in September 2026, a standard adult ticket cost €15. The museum ticket page also lists a combined Musei delle Isole ticket for €20. It includes the Glass Museum, the Lace Museum, and the museum on Torcello, and is valid for three months for one visit to each. If you only want to visit Murano and Burano, there’s no need to add Torcello just to use every admission.

Choose a glassmaking demonstration based on the specific workshop and its visitor arrangements. Find out whether it’s a separate demonstration, a paid workshop, or a stop that includes a sales pitch. Watching a master work at the furnace for a few minutes is very different from spending longer making something yourself. Ask exactly what’s included before booking.

After the museum, walk along the canals and gradually make your way toward Murano Faro stop. Don’t try to squeeze in every workshop you pass. If you love glass, stay longer on Murano and shorten the rest of the day. That’s one of the nice things about exploring independently.

Burano: Colorful Houses and a Lace-Making Tradition

I’d start on Burano with a leisurely walk along the canals. The colorful houses and their reflections in the water are more than enough to fill the first part of your visit. Explore lanes beyond the immediate flow of people from the boat stop, but respect doorways, private courtyards, and the people who live here. A pretty facade isn’t an invitation to rearrange chairs outside someone else’s front door.

Your next main stop could be the Museo del Merletto, the Lace Museum. Before visiting, check the latest opening hours, especially because it’s closed on Mondays. If you want to visit the Glass Museum as well, choose a date that works for both institutions.

When buying lace, ask how it was made and where it came from. Handmade lace and a cheap souvenir from an ordinary shop aren’t necessarily the same thing. I wouldn’t make a purchase just because the sales story sounds lovely; I’d look for information the shop can provide about the specific item.

Leave time for a meal and a relaxing break on Burano. Two hours between arrival and departure can pass very quickly if you add a museum to your walk. If you don’t want to keep checking the time all day, I’d skip another island rather than lunch.

Mazzorbo: A Short Extra Walk

You can continue on foot from Burano to Mazzorbo, which is connected to it by a bridge. It’s a pleasant extra stop once you’ve explored the colorful lanes and fancy a change of scenery. You don’t need to book another boat trip; just check the map for the footbridge between the islands.

Mazzorbo is home to Venissa, an estate that combines a vineyard and gastronomy. However, distinguish between walking on public paths and visiting the private estate or a reserved dining experience. Check access and current offerings directly on the Venissa website.

I’d add Mazzorbo only if you have enough time. If you’ve already visited the museum on Murano, had a long lunch, and explored Burano, it may be nicer to catch a boat and save another stop for next time. I wouldn’t automatically add Torcello to an already full day.

A Relaxed One-Day Itinerary Without Unnecessary Rushing

For this Murano Burano Italy itinerary, set out from Venice for Murano in the morning, depending on the current boat service and the museum or workshop’s opening hours. Spend the morning on one main activity and a walk to Murano Faro. I wouldn’t count on visiting a workshop immediately after stepping off the first morning boat without checking first.

Continue to Burano around lunchtime. Find somewhere for lunch, walk along the canals and visit the Lace Museum if you’re interested. If you still have time and energy, continue on to Mazzorbo. Choose your return boat with some buffer time and keep your evening plans in Venice low-key.

You can reverse the order if photographing Burano earlier in the day is your main goal. There is no single universally correct order. What matters more is the museums’ opening hours, reservations and how much time you want to give each island.

With young children, I would simplify the day to one island or one paid activity. You may have to deal with the stroller on bridges and when boarding the boat. Pack a drink, a snack and a windproof layer in a small bag so you don’t have to look for the nearest shop every time someone needs something.

Where to Stay: On the Islands or in Venice

If Venice is the main focus of your trip and you’re visiting the islands for one day, I generally wouldn’t change hotels just for this excursion. I would choose a night on Murano or Burano if you specifically want to experience the island in the evening and early morning. Allow for travel time to the sights, and keep in mind that the choice of evening venues differs from that in Venice’s historic center.

Casa Sulla Laguna on Murano would be worth considering if you’re looking for a small property near the boat connections. When we checked in September 2026, it had a 9.3 out of 10 rating on Booking.com. Guests appreciate the helpful communication and quiet setting; lagoon views are available only from selected rooms. Before booking, compare the room category and how you will get there.

NH Collection Venezia Murano Villa occupies a former glassworks building. It belongs on the shortlist for a couple looking for distinctive architecture, terraces and hotel services. The hotel advertises private transport to central Venice, but you need to check the times, price and booking arrangements with reception. The mere existence of a hotel boat does not guarantee a free transfer at any time. When we checked in September 2026, it had a 9.1 out of 10 rating on Booking.com. Guests appreciate the spacious rooms, breakfast and the setting in a former glassworks.

MURANO Suites – Venezia Murano is worth considering if you want a self-contained apartment. At the same check, it scored 9.5 out of 10 on Booking.com; guests praise the cleanliness, facilities and location near the Museo stop. Individual apartments differ: Cobalto, for example, has a separate bedroom, a private terrace and sleeps up to four guests. So don’t choose based solely on a terrace photo from another unit.

Casa Burano offers accommodation spread across several buildings on Burano. I would consider it for a stay if you want to enjoy the island outside the main wave of day-trippers. When booking, check the location of the specific room and how breakfast is served. It isn’t automatically one traditional hotel building with all services behind a single door. At the same check, it scored 9.5 out of 10 on Booking.com; guests praise the cleanliness, helpful hosts and quiet after the day visitors leave. Check whether your specific room has stairs.

This selection is based on information from the operators and available reviews, not on our own stay. For each option, compare the dates, availability, breakfast, cancellation policy and transport. If you have an early-morning flight, I would sort out the airport connection before worrying about the pillow type.

Where to Eat and When to Choose an Organized Tour

On Mazzorbo, you can check the menu at Osteria Contemporanea in the Venissa estate. For a more ambitious dining experience, the same estate also has a separate restaurant, so when booking, check which venue you are actually heading to. Discuss vegetarian options and any menu adjustments in advance; you don’t have to accept a fish menu recommendation simply because you’re on an island.

For a simpler day, choose lunch based on the menu and opening hours of a place along your route. When looking at the menu, check whether the price includes all the usual charges on the bill, and allow time for service. Lunch between two boats with little buffer usually won’t make things more comfortable for you or the restaurant.

An organized tour is useful when you don’t want to deal with each transfer yourself. You can compare Murano and Burano tours on GetYourGuide. Before booking, read how much time you get on each island, the departure point, the guide’s language and whether museum admission is included at all. The total length of the excursion is not the same as the time you have for an independent walk.

I would travel independently by vaporetto if you want to stay longer in a museum or leave lunch open. You can book a paid glass demonstration separately. Choose based on what the tour includes, not just on how many islands fit into the offer’s title.

Is There an Entrance Fee for Murano and Burano?

The islands are not a gated attraction with one shared admission ticket. You pay for transport and selected paid visits, such as a museum or workshop. Alongside that, Venice has rules for an access fee, which applies on selected dates and under specific visiting conditions in the historic city.

When we checked on September 26, 2026, this year’s fee-collection period had already ended; from July 27, 2026, visitors neither pay nor request an exemption. For the next season, always open the new calendar on the official website.

According to the official 2026 rules, the access fee does not apply to the smaller lagoon islands, including Murano and Burano. If you travel to them via historic Venice, check your own situation in the official Venezia Unica rules and in the FAQ on the area of application. It is not correct to infer from an island exemption that you are automatically exempt for an entire day also spent in the city center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do Murano and Burano in one day?

Yes, one full day is a reasonable basis for both islands, one or two main activities and lunch. Factor in boat transfers, waiting time and the journey from your accommodation to the pier into your plan.

Which boat gets me from Murano to Burano?

The key connection is ACTV line 12 from the Murano Faro stop. Check the current route, timetable and platform with the operator for your specific date of visit.

Is the 24-hour ACTV ticket worth it?

At the standard fares verified in September 2026, it costs €25, while three separate 75-minute tickets total €28.50. For several separate trips it may therefore be more economical. Before purchasing, check the validity coverage and discounts.

Which is better, Murano or Burano?

I would choose Murano for the glassmaking, museum and workshops. Burano for the colourful houses, strolling and lace-making tradition. If you only have half a day, pick one island according to your own interest.

Is the lace museum open on Monday?

According to the official schedule it is closed on Monday. Before your trip, also check the seasonal opening hours and any exceptional changes on the museum’s website.

Can I stay overnight on the islands?

Yes, both Murano and Burano have accommodation. It’s an interesting choice for an island evening and morning, but for daily visits to historic Venice you will need boat transport.

Do I need a guide for the trip?

Not for an independent vaporetto trip and walk. A guide or organised excursion can be useful if you want commentary, a pre-arranged itinerary and less transport planning.
