Chemnitz Christmas Market 2026: Pyramid & Bergparade

TL;DRThe main Chemnitzer Weihnachtsmarkt in Chemnitz, Germany runs from 27 Nov–23 Dec 2026 right in the pedestrian zone around the town hall. The highlight of the whole season falls on Saturday 28 November, when the Große Bergparade — a procession of approximately a thousand uniformed miners and musicians — marches through the city centre. Chemnitz is easy to reach from major hubs across Europe, and all-day on-street parking in the red Zone II costs just €2.50. The trip is ideal for families with children as well as anyone interested in the Ore Mountains mining tradition.

On the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent, around a thousand uniformed miners and musicians march through the centre of Chemnitz, Germany — in 2025 the procession finished at Theaterplatz, where participants joined together to sing the miners’ anthem Steigerlied. Chemnitz lies in the heart of Saxony and is easily accessible for visitors from across Europe; it’s also a natural stop if you’re planning a Christmas market trip to Germany.

Around the town hall on Markt and Neumarkt squares you’ll find over 200 stalls, among them a five-storey pyramid and an Erzgebirge Schwibbogen — a wooden candle arch with candles, a traditional Christmas decoration from the Ore Mountains. In the adjoining Düsseldorfer Platz you can sit with a mulled wine on the upper level of the wooden pyramid and enjoy views over the market, and with children you can comfortably stroll around the entire pedestrian zone on foot. Our guide covers the dates, the parade route, parking rates of just a few euros a day, and tips on how to combine your visit with other towns in the Ore Mountains.

Chemnitz Germany Christmas Market 2026 Dates & Opening Hours

The Advent season in Chemnitz, Germany starts at the end of November and runs right up to Christmas Eve, so you can soak up the festive atmosphere for nearly four full weeks. Both the main market, the Chemnitzer Weihnachtsmarkt, and the neighbouring Ore Mountains village Erzgebirgsdorf are open from Friday 27 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026, giving you the flexibility to choose between a quieter weekday or a livelier weekend.

Opening Hours by Day

On regular weekdays, Monday through Thursday, the stalls around the town hall open at 11:00 and close at 20:00, leaving plenty of time for an afternoon or early-evening stroll. If you visit on a Friday or Saturday, you can start as early as the morning and stay an hour later, as the market runs from 10:00 to 21:00, while on Sundays it’s open from 10:00 to 20:00.

For the neighbouring Ore Mountains village Erzgebirgsdorf on Düsseldorfer Platz, only the overall market dates have been confirmed for 2026 so far, and the specific daily hours haven’t been published yet. As a reference point, in 2025 the village kept the same opening hours as the main market and additionally stayed open between the holidays from 27 December to 3 January (except New Year’s Eve) from 11:00 to 21:00.

Opening Day and Last Day

Watch out for a common mistake: some unofficial websites incorrectly list the start date as Saturday 28 November. The city of Chemnitz actually opens the market a day earlier, on Friday 27 November 2026, when the stalls first open in the afternoon with hours of 16:00 to 21:00.

Your last chance to browse the stalls and do some shopping will be on Wednesday 23 December 2026, when the main market around the town hall closes for the season. If you’re thinking of heading to the city after Christmas and hoping the Erzgebirgsdorf village will be running post-holiday hours as it did last year, check the current times on the city’s website before you set off so you don’t make a wasted journey.

Where to Stay in Chemnitz

Once you’ve picked your Advent dates, it’s worth thinking about spending a night or two in the city. While Chemnitz is manageable as a day trip from many parts of Europe, staying at least one night is particularly worthwhile over the opening weekend with the Saturday Bergparade — or whenever you want to enjoy an evening mulled wine without worrying about who’s driving back. The city also makes a great base for exploring other Christmas markets across the Ore Mountains.

Best Areas to Stay

If you want everything within easy walking distance of your hotel, look for accommodation in the Zentrum area around Theaterplatz and Straße der Nationen. From here you can walk to both the Christmas market itself and the Bergparade route, and you won’t need a car in the evening at all.

If you prefer a quieter setting and lower nightly rates, check out the Kaßberg neighbourhood or the fringes of the centre, from where you can reach the city centre in around 15 to 20 minutes on foot or by tram. And if you’d like to turn your trip into a full Ore Mountains Christmas market weekend, you could also base yourself in one of the smaller towns that host their own mining parades, such as Annaberg-Buchholz or Seiffen.

Hotel Tips Near the Market

To make choosing easier, here are four specific hotels in Chemnitz that vary in location and budget:

  • Hotel Chemnitzer Hof: Centrally located at Theaterplatz 4, next door to the opera house and the Petrikirche.
  • Hotel an der Oper: Also central, at Straße der Nationen 56 — right on the 2025 Bergparade route.
  • Seaside Residenz Hotel Chemnitz: Situated on the southern edge of the centre at Bernsdorfer Straße 2.
  • B&B Hotel Chemnitz: A budget-friendly option on the edge of the centre at Zwickauer Straße 13.

Große Bergparade in Chemnitz

If you’re trying to decide which day to visit, Saturday 28 November 2026 is arguably the most exciting date in the entire Advent calendar. This is the day of the Große Bergparade (Great Miners’ Parade) — a procession of uniformed miners and musicians that officially opens the Christmas season across the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge).

Watching the parade from the street is completely free of charge. In 2025, over a thousand participants from miners’ brotherhoods took part, and around a thousand uniformed miners and musicians are expected again this year. The parade typically starts in the afternoon — check the exact time on chemnitz.de, as the city usually announces the date first and confirms the start time closer to the event.

Where to Stand and the Parade Route

When you’re preparing for a parade of this scale, it helps to know which streets the costumed groups will follow. In 2025, the route led through the city centre along Straße der Nationen and Brückenstraße to Theaterplatz, so these are the spots to aim for when staking out your viewing position. On Bergparade day, 28 November, keep in mind that these streets may be closed to traffic for the duration of the procession.

But the programme doesn’t end with the march through the streets — the real finale comes at the destination. In 2025, the closing ceremony at Theaterplatz brought the parade to a close with a mass singing of the miners’ anthem Steigerlied.

💡 Tip: If you’re driving to Chemnitz on Saturday 28 November for the Bergparade, try to arrive in the morning, as you’ll need to account for road closures along the parade route in the city centre.

Bergparaden in the Ore Mountains: Full Overview

If 28 November doesn’t work for your schedule, you won’t miss out on the miners’ brotherhood parades altogether. Throughout Advent, similar processions take place in other towns across the Ore Mountains, so you can plan a December weekend trip to Marienberg, Seiffen, or Annaberg-Buchholz instead.

What to See at the Market: Pyramid, Schwibbogen & Erzgebirgsdorf

The Chemnitz Christmas Market spreads around the town hall in the pedestrian zone across Markt and Neumarkt squares, with the Ore Mountains village on Düsseldorfer Platz forming part of the whole event. According to the map, Theaterplatz, Markt and Düsseldorfer Platz are all within a 10-minute walk of each other, so moving between the different areas is quick and easy.

As you wander between the stalls, it’s useful to know that there are two separate pyramids on site: a twelve-metre one right next to the town hall and a twenty-one-metre one in the Erzgebirgsdorf section. Alongside these, the market features a range of other elements closely associated with the Ore Mountains tradition.

12m Pyramid by the Town Hall

In the main section of the market around the town hall stands a 12-metre-tall, five-storey pyramid that has been a fixture of the local Christmas market since 1986.

On Am Rathaus street you’ll find a Schwibbogen measuring 5 × 2 metres. The main market area also features a large music box with a diameter of 4.40 metres.

Erzgebirgsdorf with the 21m Pyramid on Düsseldorfer Platz

On the nearby Düsseldorfer Platz you’ll find the Erzgebirgsdorf (Ore Mountains Village), which forms part of the market and consists of around 20 stalls selling Ore Mountains specialities. This is also where the second, 21-metre-tall wooden pyramid stands, together with the “Pyramidenhaus” structure.

This construction offers a unique experience, because on the upper floor you can sit with a mulled wine and enjoy the view over the market. Seating can be reserved in advance — contact details are available on the Erzgebirgsdorf page at chemnitz.de.

For Kids: Kinderland, Ferris Wheel & Santa at 5 pm

Families with children will be glad to find a dedicated children’s area called Kinderland with workshops, where younger visitors can keep themselves entertained. The market also includes children’s carousels and a Ferris wheel.

A daily highlight for kids is the early-evening programme at the town hall. Every day at exactly 5:00 pm, Santa appears on the stage by the town hall, so you can time your stroll with the children to arrive just in time for that moment.

What to Eat and How Much It Costs

The good news for visitors is that entry to the Christmas market is free, so you only pay for food and drinks and anything you buy at the stalls. Among the roughly twenty stalls with Ore Mountains specialities in the Erzgebirgsdorf, you’ll find hearty eintopf soup among other things, but we’d especially recommend the sweet pastries and hot drinks.

The Erzgebirgsdorf also sells Baumstriezel (sweet pastry). Pair it with a hot mulled wine (Glühwein) to warm yourself up as you explore the market.

The following figures are indicative estimates based on previous years, taken from a survey by the coupons.de portal as reported in the media. In 2024, a mug of mulled wine cost around €4 without the deposit, with a deposit of around €2 on the mug. Prices for 2026 are not yet known.

Getting to Chemnitz and Where to Park

Chemnitz in Germany is well connected by road from many directions across Central Europe. All driving times and distances below are estimates based on routes from city centres with no traffic, so check a navigation app such as Google Maps before you set off.

Getting There by Car

Chemnitz is conveniently located for visitors coming from across the region. If you’re travelling from the German side, the city is easily reached via the A4 motorway. From the Czech border, the crossing at Hora Svatého Šebestiána / Reitzenhain leads directly onto the B174 road into Chemnitz — a straightforward and scenic route through the Ore Mountains. From Dresden, Chemnitz is approximately 80 km via the A4, which takes around one hour without traffic.

From other major European hubs, Chemnitz is within a comfortable day-trip or overnight distance. The city sits in the heart of Saxony, making it a natural stop if you’re exploring the wider region that also includes Leipzig and Dresden.

By Train and Bus

If you prefer not to drive, you can reach Chemnitz by bus or train. FlixBus operates direct coach services to Chemnitz from several European cities, with journey times varying by origin. Check current schedules and fares at flixbus.com.

By rail, bear in mind that there is no direct long-distance train into Chemnitz central station from most major hubs. One common option is to take a train to Dresden Hauptbahnhof and then change to a regional service to Chemnitz — the Dresden–Chemnitz leg takes around 1 hour 20 minutes. Check current timetables and connections on the DB (Deutsche Bahn) website before travelling.

Parking in the City Centre (Zones & Prices)

In the city you can use multi-storey car parks such as Galerie Roter Turm or Rathaus, or on-street parking. A convenient option is on-street parking using the city’s official tariff zones, which can also be paid by mobile phone via smartparking; full details are available in the parking section on chemnitz.de.

The zone closest to the centre is Zone I (blue zone), which is chargeable Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. In this zone you pay €0.50 for the first 40 minutes and then €0.50 for every 20 minutes thereafter, with no daily maximum. Spaces are available on streets such as Brückenstraße/Mühlenstraße (150 spaces), Straße der Nationen (85 spaces), and at Getreidemarkt (50 spaces).

The most affordable option for an all-day visit is Zone II (red zone), where you pay €0.50 for the first hour and then €0.50 for every 30 minutes, with a daily maximum of €2.50. Zone II is chargeable Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon.

💡 Tip: On-street parking is only chargeable Monday to Saturday (in Zone II until 12:00 noon on Saturdays, in Zone I until 2:00 pm), so on Sundays you can park on-street in Zones I and II free of charge.

What to Combine with Your Trip to Chemnitz

A visit to Chemnitz is easy to combine with nearby towns if you’re keen to explore more Christmas markets in Germany near the border. If you’d like to compare the smaller Saxon markets with those that rank among the best Christmas markets in Europe, there are five more options within comfortable reach.

Marienberg, Annaberg & Seiffen

Around 30 km from Chemnitz lies the town of Marienberg, where the Christmas market runs from 25 November to 20 December 2026 and a Bergparade passes through on Sunday 13 December at 2:00 pm; you can read more in our guide to the Marienberg Christmas market. Another stop in the Ore Mountains is Annaberg-Buchholz, whose market runs from 27 November to 23 December 2026 and features the Grand Bergparade on Sunday 20 December at 1:30 pm (see our Annaberg Christmas market guide for details).

You can also head to Seiffen, known as the toy village. The Grand Bergparade there takes place on Saturday 12 December 2026 at 3:30 pm, and everything you need to plan your visit is covered in our Seiffen Christmas market guide.

Freiberg & Dresden

More mining-town atmosphere awaits in Freiberg, where the miners’ Christmarkt runs from 24 November to 22 December 2026. On Saturday 5 December 2026 you can watch the torch-lit Bergparade through the city.

If you’re travelling via the A4 motorway and want to round off your trip with a big-city Christmas market, make a stop in Dresden, which is around 80 km from Chemnitz along the A4. It’s home to the famous Striezelmarkt, and you’ll find all the practical information you need in our guide to the Dresden Christmas market.

Our Tips for Visiting with Kids

When visiting with children, you’ll appreciate the fact that the entire market is in a pedestrian zone and the individual sections are close to one another, so the walk between the Kinderland attractions, the Ferris wheel and the town hall stage is manageable even for little legs. If you’re visiting on the day of the Bergparade, arrive with the family in the morning, so you have time to park comfortably before any road closures and avoid the biggest rush on arrival.

Plan your day with the kids so you don’t miss Santa’s daily appearance at 5:00 pm by the town hall. Since you’ll be standing still for a while while watching the programme or the parade, don’t forget to dress everyone — including yourself — in warm layers.
