Lukáš and I have been coming to Portugal regularly since 2020, and the Algarve has become our second home, where we often spend entire winter months. We love the endless surfing possibilities, the golden limestone cliffs, the charming cafés and the local ceramics – and for a while now we’ve even been thinking about buying our own little house here.
Over the years we’ve explored just about every corner of this coastline, but if we had to pick a single spot that captivates us every single time, it would without a doubt be Praia da Marinha near the town of Carvoeiro. In our opinion it’s probably the most picturesque beach in the entire Algarve, and we love heading there early in the morning to enjoy the incredible calm before the crowds arrive.
There is one thing we have to admit right at the start, though. This beach demands a little planning, because without getting the tide timing right you won’t enjoy even half of what it has to offer when you arrive at exactly the right moment.

When to Visit Praia da Marinha
If you want to enjoy this natural beauty calmly and stress-free, we recommend coming in May, early June or September. During these months the weather is already lovely and warm for swimming, but you’ll avoid the biggest rush of tourists that floods in during peak summer. We even come in winter, when the water is too icy for swimming, but for wandering along the cliffs and taking photos without people around it’s an absolutely ideal time.
In July and August you should expect the beach to be bursting at the seams and the sun to be genuinely relentless. If you’re travelling here during the holidays, try to arrive before nine in the morning so you can park calmly and claim a patch of sand for yourself. By around noon, queues form at the stairs and the atmosphere loses a lot of its charm, so getting up early really pays off.
The absolutely crucial factor for planning your trip is the tide, which can completely transform the beach’s face. Always check a tide table app in advance, because at high tide a substantial part of the sand disappears under the water and swimming can be dangerous. At low tide, on the other hand, a whole magical world of rock passages, tiny coves and calm pools opens up to you.

Exploring this stretch of coast is far more enjoyable when you don’t have to spend hours in the car, which is why finding a base in the immediate area is ideal. What worked best for us was the nearby picturesque town of Carvoeiro, which has kept its fishing-village character and has a wonderful atmosphere. Another practical option is the livelier resort of Armação de Pêra, with its long sandy beaches and great infrastructure for families with kids.
If you want to treat yourself to true luxury and perfect service, be sure to check out the five-star hotel Tivoli Carvoeiro. This gorgeous resort is set right into the cliffs above the ocean, with breathtaking views from the pool and a top-notch wellness centre for evening relaxation. In reviews, guests often praise the incredibly generous breakfasts and the perfect location, from which you can easily set off on trips around the area.
For couples looking for romance and quiet, we can warmly recommend Vila Alba Resort, located just about fifteen minutes’ walk from our favourite beach. This mid-range hotel will charm you with its gorgeous infinity pool and direct access to the nearby Albandeira beach. Its peaceful, greenery-filled garden makes the perfect refuge after a demanding day in the sun.
Families with kids or groups of friends will love the Pestana Palm Gardens complex right in Carvoeiro. It offers very spacious accommodation in small houses with ocean views and a great big pool in a well-kept garden. It’s the perfect compromise between the privacy of your own apartment and the comfort of hotel services, and at a very reasonable price too.

11 Things to See and Do at Praia da Marinha and Nearby
1. Discover the Iconic Rock Heart
Looking out from the cliffs, you’ll immediately be struck by the massive double arch, often nicknamed the letter M or the cathedral. From a certain angle at the top of the cliff, these two arches and a nearby rock pinnacle merge into a perfect heart shape, which locals romantically call the heart of the Algarve. It’s probably the most photographed spot in the whole area, and trust me, in real life it looks even more majestic than on the postcards.
To see this unique optical illusion in all its glory, you need to walk west along the cliff trail and keep a close eye out for the right angle. The best light for photos here is found just before sunset, when the limestone rocks take on an incredibly rich golden colour. If you arrive at low tide, you can also walk right up to these massive arches along the beach and admire their enormous size from below.
2. Tackle the Roughly 150 Wooden Steps
The path from the cliff down to the ocean leads along a winding wooden staircase of around 150 steps. While the way down is fairly easy and takes you five to ten minutes at most, the climb back up can be quite a challenge in the summer heat. Towards the end the staircase gets pretty steep, so at the top you’ll definitely be glad to catch your breath and rehydrate.
Because of this steep access, the beach unfortunately has no wheelchair access, which is worth keeping in mind. Sadly, you can’t get down with a stroller or wheelchair, but even the view from the top alone is worth the trip. If a queue forms at the stairs, we recommend going around them along the western cliff path, from where you also get some fantastic bonus views over the whole cove.
💡 Tip: Be sure to wear sturdy shoes or at least good-quality sandals for the descent and climb – flip-flops get pretty slippery on the wooden steps.
3. Time Your Visit for Low Tide
As we’ve already mentioned, this place only reveals its full magic when the ocean retreats. At low tide the beach widens considerably and you can safely stroll between the individual rock towers that divide the space into several smaller coves. It also uncovers gorgeous little sea caves and natural rock pools that hold pleasantly warm water.
At full high tide, on the other hand, the free space for towels shrinks dramatically and some parts of the beach can even be completely flooded. There’s also a real risk of getting stranded at the far end of the beach, from which it’s hard to make your way back to the stairs across the risen water. Lukáš and I always keep an eye on the tide tables on our phones and only head here when the water is starting to recede.
4. Hike the Seven Hanging Valleys Cliff Walk
Right by the upper parking lot begins one of the most beautiful coastal routes in all of Europe, called the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos. This trail leads you along breathtaking cliffs, offers views into deep chasms and shows you the finest natural scenery in all of Portugal. The total length of the route one way is roughly 5.7 kilometres and it’s of moderate difficulty.
The path ends at the smaller beach of Praia de Vale Centeanes, and one way an easy walk takes you about two and a half to three hours. Along the way you’ll pass the famous Farol de Alfanzina lighthouse from 1920 and, from above, peer straight into the enormous crater of the famous Benagil cave. We recommend setting off from Praia da Marinha heading west, because parking is easier there and the sun will be at your back, which is ideal for photography.
💡 Tip: Bring plenty of drinking water and good, sturdy shoes for this hike – the path runs over rocky ground and there’s nowhere to hide from the sun along the way.
5. Snorkel in Crystal-Clear Water
Because the beach is sheltered from big waves and framed by limestone cliffs, it boasts some of the cleanest water in the whole Algarve. The crystal-clear visibility makes it an absolute paradise for snorkelling lovers, who come here to explore the rich underwater life. Around the rock formations and by the double arch you’ll find plenty of interesting nooks to explore.
Beneath the surface you’ll commonly meet small octopuses, schools of colourful fish and anemones clinging to the submerged rocks. Just don’t forget to pack your own snorkelling gear, because there’s no rental shop on the beach itself, and it would be a huge shame to miss out on this experience. The Atlantic water tends to be refreshing and rarely tops twenty-two degrees even in August, but once you dive into exploring the underwater world, you’ll quickly forget about the chill.
6. Rent a Kayak or Paddleboard and Reach the Caves
From the deck of a small vessel you get a completely new perspective on these enormous cliffs, and you can reach places you simply can’t get to on land. The sea around here is literally riddled with dozens of smaller and larger caves waiting to be explored. Guided trips usually last around two and a half hours and run in small groups of up to six people, so a calm experience is guaranteed.
The main destination of these water trips is usually the famous Benagil cave, which lies only about four kilometres away and can be reached exclusively across the water. Many travellers choose morning slots around nine o’clock, when the ocean is calmest and the light inside the caves creates a magical atmosphere. We recommend booking these boat and kayak trips online in advance through GetYourGuide, as the best time slots are often sold out on the spot.
💡 Tip: Although official tours offer great comfort, local operators right in the nearby village of Benagil or in Carvoeiro often rent kayaks a bit more cheaply.
7. Be Ready for a Wild Beach With No Showers or Sunbeds
Despite its huge popularity, this place still retains the character of wild nature, which means an absolute minimum of tourist facilities. You won’t find any neat rows of rented sunbeds with parasols, nor public showers to rinse off the salt water. The only toilets are up at the parking lot, so be prepared to climb those wretched stairs for them.
As for refreshments, there’s just one small snack bar up by the staircase, which tends to have fairly high prices and long queues in summer. That’s why we always advise packing plenty of drinking water, a good snack and quality sunscreen. Don’t forget to bring your own towel and a sun umbrella too, because the natural shade under the cliffs gets claimed early, and for safety reasons it’s also recommended to keep a safe distance from the rock face because of the risk of landslides.
8. Don’t Get Caught Out by the Morning Parking Battle
Getting here is thankfully very easy: from the main N125 road, simply turn off near the international school in Lagoa and then just follow the clear signposting. A huge advantage is that parking here is completely free on two graded gravel lots right above the cliffs. Unfortunately, the capacity of the upper lot is only around thirty-two spaces, which is absolutely not enough to meet demand in the summer season.
During July and August both parking lots often fill up within one to two hours after sunrise. When capacity overflows, the police often close the entire access road as far back as a kilometre before the beach, and you simply won’t get any further. One more important warning for nomads and campervanners: motorhomes are strictly forbidden to enter this parking lot and the police check for this very actively.
💡 Tip: If you do arrive later and find the barrier closed, don’t waste time waiting in the queue and head instead to one of the nearby smaller beaches, which tend to be less crowded.
9. Explore Nearby Praia de Vale Centeanes
If you set off along the mentioned cliff trail heading west, you’ll eventually reach this charming smaller beach called Praia de Vale Centeanes. Tucked between tall cliffs, it has a slightly calmer atmosphere and the golden sand practically invites you to rest in the afternoon. The water here is beautifully clean too, so don’t forget to pack your swimsuit as a reward after the hike.
A big plus of this beach is the excellent restaurant O Stop, right by the entrance, offering wonderful seating with ocean views. From Praia da Marinha you can get here on an easy walk in about two and a half hours, so it’s an ideal destination for a morning trip. Lukáš and I always love to grab a coffee here, watch the waves for a while and then, full of energy, set off on the way back along the cliffs.
10. Admire the Bizarre Rock Formations of Algar Seco
Just a short walk from the centre of Carvoeiro lies another natural gem of the Algarve: the bizarre limestone formations of Algar Seco. Over millennia, wind and seawater have carved the local rocks into incredible shapes of towers, deep holes and natural windows. The whole area is crossed by a system of safe wooden walkways and carved steps, which let you take in this beauty really up close.
The biggest draw here is without doubt the famous Boneca cave, whose two small natural windows offer a breathtaking view straight onto the blue horizon of the Atlantic. The walk through this rock labyrinth is completely undemanding, so you can manage it even in sandals and it takes about an hour. It’s an ideal short stop on the way from the beach, especially in the late afternoon when the rocks take on a warm orange glow.
11. Stop for Great Vegetarian Food in Carvoeiro
Since Lukáš and I are vegetarians, we always carefully map out the local food scene, and Carvoeiro never disappoints us in this respect. You’ll find genuinely excellent vegetarian food here, which easily beats even the places in bigger cities. Our absolute favourite for a late breakfast is Pink Brunch & Pizza, where they make incredible matcha pancakes, fresh juices and fantastic vegan salads.
If, after a day at the beach, you fancy something spicier, definitely try the Indian and Asian cuisine. We can warmly recommend the restaurants Gurkha Kitchen and Pashmina Indian Restaurant – both offer a huge choice of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes that taste absolutely fantastic. For a light lunch or a specialty coffee, we often pop into the nearby café Organic, where the atmosphere is very laid-back and the food is simply perfect.
