Algarve Portugal: Praia da Marinha Guide
We have been travelling to Algarve Portugal regularly since 2020, and the Algarve has become our second home, where we often spend entire winter months. We love the endless surfing opportunities, golden limestone cliffs, charming cafés and local ceramics, and we have even been considering buying our own little house for some time now.
Over the years, we have explored practically every corner of the coast, but if we had to choose just one place that never fails to take our breath away, it would undoubtedly be Praia da Marinha near the town of Carvoeiro. In our opinion, it is probably the most picturesque beach in the entire region. We love coming here early in the morning so we can enjoy the incredible tranquillity before the crowds arrive.
There is one thing we should admit right at the start. This beach requires a little planning, because without timing your visit around the tides, you will not enjoy even half as much as you would if you arrived at exactly the right time.

When to visit Praia da Marinha
If you want to enjoy this natural wonder peacefully and without stress, we recommend visiting in May, early June or September. During these months, the weather is already beautifully warm enough for swimming, but you avoid the biggest influx of tourists who arrive during the main summer season. We also come here in winter. The water is too cold for swimming, but for walking along the cliffs and taking photos without crowds, it is an absolutely ideal time.
In July and August, you should expect the beach to be packed, while the sun can be truly relentless. If you are travelling here during the school holidays, try to arrive before 9 a.m. so you can park easily and claim a patch of sand for yourself. By midday, queues form at the stairs and the atmosphere loses much of its charm, so getting up early is genuinely worth it.
The tides are absolutely crucial when planning your trip, as they can completely transform the appearance of the beach. Always check an app with tide tables in advance, because at high tide a significant part of the sand disappears beneath the water and swimming can be dangerous. At low tide, on the other hand, a whole magical world of rock passages, small coves and calm pools opens up to you.

Exploring this stretch of coastline is much more enjoyable when you do not have to spend hours in the car, so it is ideal to find a base close by. The place that has worked best for us is the nearby picturesque town of Carvoeiro, which has retained the character of a fishing village and offers a wonderful atmosphere. Another practical option is the livelier resort of Armação de Pêra, where you will find long sandy beaches and excellent facilities for families with children.
If you want to treat yourself to genuine luxury and impeccable service, take a look at the five-star Tivoli Carvoeiro. This beautiful resort is built directly into the cliffs above the ocean, offers breathtaking views from its pool and has a top-class wellness centre for evening relaxation. Guests often praise the incredibly generous breakfasts and the perfect location, which makes it easy to set off on trips around the area.
For couples looking for romance and peace, we can wholeheartedly recommend Vila Alba Resort, located just about a 15-minute walk from our favourite beach. This mid-range hotel will charm you with its beautiful infinity pool and direct access to nearby Albandeira Beach. Its peaceful, lush garden is the perfect retreat after a long day in the sunshine.
Families with children and groups of friends will love Pestana Palm Gardens in Carvoeiro. It offers very spacious accommodation in small houses overlooking the ocean, along with a large, excellent pool in a beautifully maintained garden. It is the perfect compromise between the privacy of your own apartment and the convenience of hotel services, and it comes at a very reasonable price.

The luxurious villas are ideal for couples and families, are just a short distance from beautiful beaches and offer complete peace away from the main tourist crowds. 11 things to see and do at Praia da Marinha and nearby
1. Discover the iconic rock heart
From the cliffs, a massive double arch immediately catches your eye. It is often nicknamed the letter M or the cathedral. From a particular angle at the top of the cliffs, the two arches and a nearby rock pinnacle come together to form a perfect heart, which locals romantically call the heart of the Algarve. It is probably the most photographed spot in the whole area, and trust me, it looks even more majestic in person than it does on postcards.
To see this unique optical illusion in all its glory, follow the cliff path west and keep an eye out for the right angle. The best light for photos can be found just before sunset, when the limestone takes on an incredibly rich golden colour. If you arrive at low tide, you can also walk directly along the beach to the arches and admire their enormous size from below.
2. Tackle the approximately 150 wooden steps
The route from the cliff down to the ocean leads along a winding wooden staircase with approximately 150 steps. While the descent is fairly easy and takes no more than five to ten minutes, the climb back up can be quite challenging in the summer heat. The staircase becomes rather steep towards the end, so once you reach the top, you will definitely be happy to catch your breath and rehydrate.
Unfortunately, because of this steep access, the beach has no step-free access, which you need to bear in mind. You cannot get down with a pushchair or wheelchair, but even the view from above is worth the effort. If a queue forms at the stairs, we recommend taking the western cliff path around them. You will also get some fantastic bonus views over the entire bay.
💡 Tip: For both the descent and the climb back up, make sure you wear sturdy shoes or at least good-quality sandals. Flip-flops can be quite slippery on the wooden steps.
3. Time your visit for low tide
As we mentioned above, this place truly reveals its magic only when the ocean retreats. At low tide, the beach becomes considerably wider and you can safely walk between the individual rock towers, which divide the area into several smaller coves. You will also see beautiful sea caves and natural rock pools filled with pleasantly warm water.
At high tide, by contrast, the space available for towels shrinks dramatically, and some sections of the beach may even be completely covered by water. There is also a real risk of becoming stranded at the far end of the beach, from where it can be difficult to return to the stairs once the water level rises. Lukáš and I always keep an eye on the tide tables on our phones and only come here when the water is starting to recede.
4. Hike the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
One of the most beautiful coastal routes in Europe starts right by the upper car park. Known as the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, the trail takes you along breathtaking cliffs, offers views into deep ravines and showcases some of Portugal’s finest natural scenery. The total one-way distance is approximately 5.7 km and the trail is moderately difficult.
The route ends at the smaller Praia de Vale Centeanes, and walking one way at a comfortable pace takes approximately two and a half to three hours. Along the way, you will pass the famous Farol de Alfanzina lighthouse, built in 1920, and look down from above into the huge crater of the famous Benagil Cave. We recommend setting off from Praia da Marinha towards the west, because parking is easier there and the sun will be behind you, which is ideal for photography.
💡 Tip: Make sure you take plenty of drinking water and good sturdy shoes on this hike. The route runs over rocky ground, and there is nowhere to shelter from the sun along the way.
5. Go snorkelling in crystal-clear water
Because the beach is protected from large waves and surrounded by limestone cliffs, it boasts some of the clearest water in the entire Algarve. The crystal-clear visibility makes it a true paradise for snorkellers who come to explore the rich marine life. Around the rock formations and near the double arch, you will find plenty of fascinating corners to explore.
Under the surface, you will commonly see small octopuses, shoals of colourful fish and anemones clinging to submerged rocks. Do not forget to pack your own snorkelling gear, though, as there is no rental shop directly on the beach and it would be a huge shame to miss this experience. The Atlantic is refreshing, and even in August the water rarely exceeds 22°C, but once you are absorbed in exploring the underwater world, you will soon forget about the cold.
6. Hire a kayak or paddleboard and paddle to the caves
From the deck of a small craft, you get a completely new perspective on these enormous cliffs, and you can reach places that are simply inaccessible by land. The sea around here is riddled with dozens of small and larger caves waiting to be explored. Guided trips usually last around two and a half hours and take place in small groups of up to six people, giving you a peaceful experience.
The main destination on these water excursions is usually the famous Benagil Cave, which is only about 4 km away and can be entered exclusively from the water. Many travellers choose morning departures around 9 a.m., when the ocean is at its calmest and the light inside the caves creates a magical atmosphere. We recommend booking these boat and kayak trips online in advance through GetYourGuide, as the best time slots are often sold out locally.
💡 Tip: Although official tours offer excellent comfort, you can often hire a kayak a little more cheaply from local operators in the nearby village of Benagil or in Carvoeiro.
7. Be ready for a semi-wild beach without showers or sun loungers
Despite its enormous popularity, this place has retained its wild character, which means there are very few tourist facilities. You will not find neat rows of rented sun loungers and parasols, nor public showers for rinsing off the salt water. The only toilets are up by the car park, so be prepared to climb those dreaded stairs whenever you need to use them.
As for refreshments, there is just one small snack bar at the top of the stairs. Prices tend to be fairly high, and long queues form there in summer. We therefore always recommend packing plenty of drinking water, a good snack and high-quality sunscreen. Also bring your own towel and a sun umbrella, as the natural shade beneath the cliffs is claimed early. For safety reasons, you should also keep a safe distance from the cliff face because of the risk of rockfalls.
8. Do not underestimate the morning battle for parking
Fortunately, getting here is very easy. Simply turn off the main N125 road near the international school in Lagoa and follow the clear signs from there. A major advantage is that parking is completely free in two prepared gravel areas directly above the cliffs. Unfortunately, the upper car park has room for only around 32 vehicles, which is nowhere near enough during the summer season.
In July and August, both parking areas often fill up within just one or two hours after sunrise. Once they are full, the police often close the entire access road about 1 km before the beach, and you simply cannot continue. One more important warning for digital nomads and campervan travellers: motorhomes are strictly forbidden from entering this car park, and the police actively enforce the rule.
💡 Tip: If you arrive later and find the barrier closed, do not waste time waiting in the queue. Instead, drive on to one of the smaller nearby beaches, which are usually less crowded.
9. Explore nearby Praia de Vale Centeanes
If you follow the aforementioned cliff trail west, you will eventually reach the charming little beach of Praia de Vale Centeanes. It is enclosed by high cliffs, has a slightly more peaceful atmosphere and its golden sand practically begs you to spend the afternoon relaxing. The water here is wonderfully clear too, so do not forget to pack your swimsuit as a reward for the hike.
One of the beach’s biggest advantages is the excellent O Stop restaurant, right by the entrance, where you can sit and enjoy wonderful ocean views. From Praia da Marinha, it takes approximately two and a half hours to walk here at a comfortable pace, making it an ideal destination for a morning outing. Lukáš and I always enjoy having a coffee here, watching the waves for a while, and then setting off back along the cliffs full of energy.
10. Admire the bizarre rock formations of Algar Seco
Just a short distance from the centre of Carvoeiro lies another natural gem of the Algarve: the bizarre limestone formations of Algar Seco. Over thousands of years, wind and seawater have carved the local rocks into incredible shapes, towers, deep holes and natural windows. A network of safe wooden walkways and carved steps runs through the area, allowing you to see this wonder up close.
The main attraction is undoubtedly the famous Boneca Cave, where two small natural windows offer breathtaking views directly towards the blue Atlantic horizon. Walking through this rocky labyrinth is extremely easy, so you can manage it in sandals and it takes roughly an hour. It is an ideal short stop on your way back from the beach, especially in the evening, when the rocks take on a warm orange glow.
11. Stop for excellent vegetarian food in Carvoeiro
As Lukáš and I are vegetarians, we always carefully explore the local food scene, and Carvoeiro has never disappointed us in this respect. You will find truly excellent vegetarian food here that can easily hold its own against restaurants in larger cities. Our absolute favourite for a late breakfast is Pink Brunch & Pizza, which serves incredible matcha pancakes, fresh juices and fantastic vegan salads.
If you fancy something spicier after a day at the beach, be sure to try Indian and Asian cuisine. We can wholeheartedly recommend Gurkha Kitchen and Pashmina Indian Restaurant. Both offer a huge selection of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes that taste absolutely fantastic. For a light lunch or speciality coffee, we often visit the nearby Organic café, where the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed and the food is simply excellent.

What’s the best way to reach the beach by car?
The route is straightforward—just take the main N125 road and turn off at the international school in the town of Lagoa. From there, brown tourist signs pointing toward Caramujeira or Praia da Marinha will reliably guide you to the coast. From nearby Carvoeiro and from the resort town of Armação de Pêra, the drive takes only about fifteen minutes.
How many steps do I have to descend to the ocean?
From the cliff down to the sand itself, there are approximately 150 wooden steps, which get quite steep toward the end. The descent takes five to ten minutes, and going back up is a bit more challenging. Unfortunately, the site is not wheelchair accessible at all, so there’s no point trying to bring a stroller.
Do you pay for parking at the top?
No, parking here is completely free in two gravel parking areas. The problem, however, is their small capacity, which is absolutely insufficient in summer and often fills up by nine in the morning. Motorhomes and caravans are also strictly prohibited from entering.
When is the best time to visit?
The very best conditions are in May, early June, or September, when the weather is beautiful but without the summer crowds. During the day, try to arrive early in the morning before nine o’clock, and most importantly, time your visit for low tide when the beach is at its widest.
How do I find the famous rock heart?
To see the heart, you need to follow the cliff trail above the beach heading west. When you position yourself correctly, two massive rock arches shaped like the letter M optically align and form a perfect heart shape. This phenomenon is most beautiful just before sunset, when the rocks have a golden color.
What facilities and amenities are available?
Be prepared for a semi-wild beach with minimal tourist facilities. At the upper parking area you’ll find public toilets and one overpriced snack bar, but down at the water level there are no showers or sunbed rentals. You’ll need to bring everything you need with you, including shade and snacks.
