Which area to choose
Before you start picking a specific hotel on Booking, it’s absolutely crucial to choose the right town first. Each part of the coast has a completely different atmosphere, and what thrills a group of young surfers might disappoint a family looking for peace and quiet.
Albufeira is easily the biggest and liveliest resort town in the whole south. If you’re after wild parties and nightlife, head to the area around The Strip, but if you’re travelling with family, go for the quieter outskirts with more laid-back resorts. It’s a great choice for those travelling without a car who want everything within reach, since plenty of buses and trains run here.
Just next door lies Vilamoura, a byword for luxury, enormous yachts and perfectly manicured lawns. You’ll find more than six top-class golf courses here, an elegant marina lined with pricey restaurants, and a huge casino. This area is ideal for more demanding travellers who don’t mind paying extra for peace, golden sand and top-notch service.
Our favourite base is Lagos, Portugal, which perfectly blends rich history with youthful surfer energy. The town has a beautiful historic centre, fantastic public transport links, and above all it’s your gateway to the most dramatic cliffs, like the famous Ponta da Piedade. It’s an ideal mix of amenities and stunning nature for couples and active travellers alike.
If you’re dreaming of romance, you’ll fall in love with Carvoeiro or neighbouring Ferragudo. These are charming, slightly sleepy towns full of whitewashed houses, narrow lanes and tiny beaches squeezed between the rocks. I’d recommend them especially for couples looking to escape the crowds who don’t mind that a rental car is a must here.
Praia da Rocha and Portimão offer a slightly different experience, as this is a bigger town with high-rise buildings lining an enormous sandy beach. The upside is excellent transport access, plenty of shops and urban comfort. Head here if you want to lie on a huge beach by day and stroll along a lively promenade in the evening.
The eastern part of the region is represented by Tavira, which is far more authentic and peaceful than the central resorts. Far fewer tourists come here, and you have to take a little boat to reach the gorgeous beaches on the island of Ilha de Tavira. It’s a paradise for older couples and lovers of tranquillity who want to experience the real, traditional Portugal.
The complete opposite awaits on the wild west in the town of Sagres, often nicknamed the end of Europe. Strong winds blow here, the cliffs are steep and rugged, which is exactly why surfers gather from all over the world. If you love nature, adventure and don’t mind a chillier ocean, you’ll adore it here.
Finally, we mustn’t forget Quarteira and Quinta do Lago. While Quarteira draws families with its long beach and gentle entry into the water, neighbouring Quinta do Lago is a closed-off world of absolute luxury, private villas and golf courses. Head here for perfect relaxation and top-tier service that will satisfy even the most demanding guests.
When to go and when to book (Algarve, Portugal weather)
Planning a holiday in southern Portugal takes a bit of strategy, especially when it comes to your wallet and the crowds. The most expensive months are traditionally July and August, when half of Europe heads here and hotel prices shoot up steeply.
From our experience, the absolute best time to go is June or September, when the ocean is already warm but you dodge the British school holidays. That gets you the best possible balance of price and peace, with four-star hotels in 2026 hovering roughly around €115 per night.
Interestingly, luxury resorts here work out noticeably cheaper than similarly high-quality hotels in Greece, Italy or the south of France. If you’re travelling with kids and tied to the summer holidays, I strongly recommend booking your accommodation at least four to six months in advance.
Off-season, on the other hand, you can afford to gamble a bit and hunt for last-minute deals. In winter and early spring, prices are a fraction of the peak, and even the most luxurious hotels offer great packages for couples or golfers. The Algarve, Portugal weather stays mild almost year-round, so a spring or autumn escape can be surprisingly pleasant.

How to choose the right hotel and practical tips
Still not sure which box you tick? The decision process is actually pretty simple. If you’re travelling with kids, stick to the areas around Albufeira, Quarteira or Lagos, where there are plenty of big resorts with water parks, shallow beaches and great facilities, like those at the Hilton or Pine Cliffs.
Couples in love should instead head to more intimate areas like Carvoeiro or Ferragudo, where they’ll find amazing boutique hotels such as the Bela Vista. Golf lovers have an easy call and should look for accommodation in Vilamoura or Quinta do Lago, home to the likes of the luxurious Conrad.
Another important factor is whether you plan to hire a car. If you’re doing the holiday without a car, choose hotels right in Albufeira, Portimão or Lagos, from where you can get everywhere by train or bus. For exploring the cliffs, like Praia da Marinha, it pays off to have a car and stay somewhere a bit more private. Reaching the Algarve, Portugal is easy too, with major carriers like Ryanair, easyJet and TAP flying into Faro Airport, which serves the whole region.
Although southern Europe is famous for its seafood, the region also has a very decent plant-based scene. We always grab great falafel and hummus at places like Estúdio Vegetariano in Lagos or Veggie Café in Albufeira. Another great, cheap option is the vegetarian buffet Eurasia, where you can eat well for around seven euros.
