If you want to discover Colombo from the coast, you’ll appreciate your first evening on the grassy Galle Face Green promenade with the sea right beside it. Another traveler might prefer to sleep near the railway station to continue by train across the island in the morning, while someone else is looking for a quiet green district with villas. When choosing accommodation, start with the district itself and only then consider the pool or window view. Most travelers spend just one or two nights here at the beginning or end of their circuit. Sometimes it makes sense to stay right in Negombo near the airport.
Before entering your payment card, watch out for a practical rule that can easily catch you by surprise when paying. Hotel prices in Sri Lanka are commonly listed with a “++” designation, meaning they exclude service charges and taxes. Your bill can end up a third higher than the advertised price. In this article, we arrange 18 hotels by district for you, from the Galle Face area to Negombo. Once you’ve chosen your location, continue with our guide to what to see in Colombo.

TL;DR
- Best for your first evening by the sea and history: Galle Face Hotel, operating since 1864, offers a saltwater pool and is located 0.6 kilometers from Galle Face Green promenade.
- Best for the morning coastal train to Galle: The Kingsbury Colombo and The Steuart by Citrus in the Fort district, where Colombo Fort station is 0.9 and 0.7 kilometers from the hotels.

Which District to Choose and Where to Stay in Colombo Sri Lanka
Colombo has 15 numbered postal and administrative districts, Colombo 1 through 15. You’ll find the number in the postal code directly in the hotel address, so for example from the code “Colombo 00300” you’ll recognize Colombo 3. For a quick overview: Colombo 1 is Fort, Colombo 2 is Slave Island, Colombo 3 is Kollupitiya, Colombo 4 is Bambalapitiya, Colombo 7 is Cinnamon Gardens, and Colombo 11 is Pettah. All distances in the article are measured as the crow flies to main points. Galle Face Green itself is a grassy seaside promenade, but people don’t swim there.
Galle Face, on the border of Colombo 1, 2, and 3 brings new luxury by the sea and a promenade right by the buildings. For your first night after arrival, it’s a pleasant choice. We’ve selected ITC Ratnadipa, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Colombo, Shangri-La Colombo, Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams, and Galle Face Hotel for you here. The hotels are 0.1 to 0.6 kilometers from the promenade and 0.9 to 1.5 kilometers from Colombo Fort station.
Fort (Colombo 1) is characterized by colonial buildings and rooftop bars. Colombo Fort railway station is 0.6 to 0.9 kilometers from the selected hotels, and it’s 0.9 to 1.0 kilometers to the center of Galle Face Green promenade. The location suits anyone continuing by train in the morning, for example along the ocean to Galle. Trains to the hills aren’t yet running at full capacity after the cyclone, so check the current status. Located here are The Kingsbury Colombo, The Steuart by Citrus, and Dutch Heritage Colombo. The business district empties out in the evenings and on weekends.
Pettah (Colombo 11) attracts visitors with bustling markets, the red Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, and the main bus station. This area is 0.9 to 1.2 kilometers from Colombo Fort railway station. It’s a destination for daytime shopping, but the neighboring Fort serves better for actual overnight stays.
Slave Island and Union Place (Colombo 2) offer apartments with kitchens and stays by Beira Lake. Hilton Colombo Residences serves families and longer stays, while Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo stands right by the waterfront. Hotels are 0.5 to 1.6 kilometers from Colombo Fort station. The district is currently undergoing major redevelopment, so inquire in advance about the immediate surroundings of your chosen room when booking.
Kollupitiya (Colombo 3) stretches along Galle Road and Marine Drive. It offers a wide range of accommodation from budget dorm beds to grand hotels, plus plenty of restaurants. We’ve selected Cinnamon Grand Colombo, Granbell Hotel Colombo, Cinnamon Red Colombo, and Hostel at Galle Face. You’re 0.6 to 1.9 kilometers from the promenade and 1.5 to 2.6 kilometers from the station. The railway runs between Galle Road and the sea.
Bambalapitiya (Colombo 4) offers accommodation right above the sea at Radisson Colombo. It works well if you’re returning from the south from Galle or Mirissa. The district is known for its dense network of Indian vegetarian eateries. You’re 5.7 kilometers from Colombo Fort station and 4.9 kilometers from the center of Galle Face Green promenade. Get to the center by tuk-tuk (or via PickMe or Uber). There are fewer hotels here than in Kollupitiya.
Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) is a green district full of residential villas, embassies, and boutique hotels. It’s a pleasant spot for couples seeking peace. We’ve selected Paradise Road Tintagel Colombo and Jetwing Colombo Seven. Viharamahadevi Park (a green city park) is about a kilometer from the hotels, and it’s 3 kilometers to Colombo Fort station. You’ll find cafés in the area, but without a tuk-tuk you’ll do a lot of walking around the city.
Mount Lavinia brings coastal restaurants and is roughly 30 minutes’ drive from the center. It’s the closest swimming beach to the city. It’s suitable for a cheaper stay by the water. Berjaya Hotel Colombo stands across the street from the beach. The area is 10 to 11 kilometers from both Colombo Fort station and the promenade. During the monsoon season from May to September, the sea tends to be rough. The railway runs between the district and the coast.
Negombo and the airport area (Katunayake) includes beach hotels and lagoon resorts that serve for overnight arrivals or before morning departures. It’s represented by Sentido Heritance Negombo. Beach hotels in Negombo are within eight kilometers of the airport and 24 to 34 kilometers from Colombo. Before swimming, always ask your hotel about the beach condition after Cyclone Ditwa from late November 2025.
💡 On this map you can compare what’s currently available — you’ll immediately see how much the price changes a few blocks away.
How Much You’ll Pay and What to Watch Out For
“++” pricing and taxes. The “++” designation on prices in Sri Lanka means that the displayed amount doesn’t include mandatory fees and taxes. The hotel adds a 10% service charge to the base accommodation rate, another 2.5% government levy, and a 1% tourism development fee on the hotel’s turnover. Some accommodations don’t list it separately on the bill. On top of that comes 18% VAT. Your bill can end up a third higher than the advertised price. Offers vary between sellers, and a lower amount often means the price excludes taxes or breakfast. Always carefully check the final amount including “taxes and service charge.”
When it’s expensive and when it’s cheaper. In February, in the middle of the high season from December to March, some hotels have noticeably higher room rates than in November. Climate data shows that January and February are the driest months, with the most rain in October and November during the inter-monsoon period. While the monsoon from May to September brings rain, it doesn’t automatically guarantee lower rates. Also watch out for local holidays: Deepavali (Hindu festival of lights) in November, Thai Pongal in January, Independence Day on February 4 with a parade at Galle Face, and Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April.
Poya days. Poya is a full-moon Buddhist holiday celebrated every month and is a public holiday. On Poya days, alcohol isn’t sold even in hotels. An exception for selected hotels applies only during Sinhala and Tamil New Year. You can easily find specific dates in the official public holiday calendar.
From the airport and for the first night. Bandaranaike Airport in Katunayake is approximately 28 kilometers from the Fort district. You can’t go by train; the best option is the air-conditioned bus 187 from the airport terminal to Colombo Fort. The service runs continuously every 10 minutes via the expressway. The journey takes about 50 minutes, costs around 300 LKR (Sri Lankan rupees, about €1), and you’ll pay the same amount for luggage over 23 kilograms. A taxi from the airport terminal counter runs about 8,100 LKR (about €22) to Colombo 1 and 7, or 3,780 LKR (about €10) to Negombo. Via the PickMe or Uber apps, the ride costs roughly 3,500 to 6,000 LKR (about €9 to €16).
Tuk-tuks and scams. Get around the city using the PickMe or Uber apps, where you see the price in advance. Before getting in, check that the vehicle registration plate exactly matches the app. A common street scam operates in the streets around Galle Face promenade and in Fort. A passerby claims to work at your hotel, then tells you a made-up story about a festival or closed temple. They then arrange a tuk-tuk that takes you to a gem shop. The ride can cost 8,000 LKR (about €22) instead of the usual 300 LKR (about €1). When approached like this, keep walking.
Noise, trains, and beaches. The sea at Galle Face Green promenade isn’t suitable for swimming due to strong currents and waves. Mount Lavinia offers a swimming beach, though from May to September there are large waves. In Negombo, check with your hotel about the current conditions before entering the water. The railway runs between Galle Road and the coast, with trains passing from around 5:00 AM. For a quieter night, request a higher floor or a room facing the courtyard, and ask the hotel if any noisy events are scheduled during your stay.
Water. Don’t drink tap water in Colombo.

How to Choose the Right Hotel and What to Watch Out For
When selecting accommodation in Colombo, it pays to check several details before submitting your reservation.
Hotels with similar names. Check the exact address on maps, because similar names are easily confused:
- Hilton Colombo on Echelon Square near Fort is not the apartment-style Hilton Colombo Residences on Union Place.
- Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams shares its address with sister hotel Nüwa and with the City of Dreams Sri Lanka complex with its casino. Nüwa is a separate hotel, not a casino, so when booking choose the specific hotel, not the entire complex.
- In Bambalapitiya stands Radisson Hotel Colombo, while in Fort the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galadari Colombo is preparing to reopen after renovation. Check whether it’s already operating in Fort, and don’t confuse it with branches in other cities.
- Galle Face Hotel, Hostel at Galle Face, and Galle Face Terrace Hostel by Tourlux are three different places.
- Beach resort Sentido Heritance Negombo near the airport is called Heritance Negombo on the operator’s website.
How to choose a room. Add a note to your reservation asking for a higher floor or a quiet room facing the courtyard. At coastal hotels, request an ocean view and ask whether any loud events are scheduled during your stay.
Vegetarian restaurants near hotels. Colombo has a dense network of South Indian vegetarian eateries, especially on Galle Road in Bambalapitiya, in Wellawatte (Colombo 6 district), and in Pettah. You’ll find dosa pancakes, idli rice dumplings, and thali, a plate with side dishes. Hotel breakfasts make vegetarian eating easier: appam and dhal lentil curry are vegetarian. Ask about coconut sambol, as it often contains dried fish. Around your accommodation you’ll have these options:
- Near Radisson Hotel Colombo you’ll find South Indian vegetarian Amirthaa (355 meters), Dwaraka Indian Vegetarian (424 meters), and Saraswathie, open from 6:40 a.m. (784 meters).
- Granbell Hotel Colombo has Indo Ceylon Cafe within reach, 121 meters away.
- From Cinnamon Red Colombo it’s 639 meters to Indo Ceylon Cafe.
- Neighboring Cinnamon Grand Colombo you’ll find Indo Ceylon Cafe (831 meters) and A-One Cafe (688 meters). Right in the hotel, Nuga Gama prepares Sri Lankan village cuisine with rice and curry, which isn’t strictly vegetarian, so ask the staff about ingredients.
- From Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams you’ll reach A-One Cafe after 273 meters.
- Close to ITC Ratnadipa, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Colombo you’ll find A-One Cafe (536 meters).
- Near Galle Face Hotel lies A-One Cafe (571 meters).
- Not far from Dutch Heritage Colombo sits Golden Cafe (870 meters) and Sriyani (911 meters).
- From The Steuart by Citrus it’s 954 meters to Golden Cafe.
- In Mount Lavinia there’s vegetarian Dwaraka on Old Quarry Road (a different Dwaraka from the one in Bambalapitiya).
- In Cinnamon Gardens near Paradise Road Tintagel Colombo and Jetwing Colombo Seven you’ll find Cafe Kumbuk and the organic Good Market on Independence Avenue, which aren’t strictly vegetarian.
Where to Next
Once you’ve sorted out your hotel, plan the rest of your trip:
- What to see in Colombo: sights and itineraries
- Sri Lanka holiday: where to go around the island
- Where to stay in Mumbai: if you’re combining your trip with India

Colombo 1 is Fort, Colombo 2 is Slave Island, Colombo 3 is Kollupitiya, and Colombo 4 is Bambalapitiya. Colombo 7 is the quiet Cinnamon Gardens and Colombo 11 is the Pettah district.
Is it worth sleeping in Colombo or going straight to Negombo?
For a late-night arrival or early morning departure, the beach town of Negombo makes sense—you’ll get there from the airport in 15 to 25 minutes. The journey to central Colombo takes about 50 minutes by bus number 187 and up to 1.5 hours by car during rush hour. Choose Colombo if you want to explore the city or continue by train inland the next day.
Are taxes included in the hotel price?
Often not. For rates with the “++” symbol, service charges and taxes are added separately, so your bill can be up to a third more than the advertised price. These items often only appear at the next step of the booking process.
When is it driest in Colombo and when are hotels more expensive?
The driest months are January and February. High season runs from December to March; some hotels charge the most in February. The wettest period is October and November. The monsoon month of June doesn’t automatically mean lower prices.
Can I get alcohol at my hotel during the Poya holiday?
Probably not. During Poya, there’s a ban on selling alcohol in shops, bars, and restaurants, including in hotels. Check the dates in Sri Lanka’s public holiday calendar.
How can I avoid tuk-tuk scams in Colombo?
For getting around, use the mobile apps PickMe and Uber, where you can see the fare in advance. On the street, don’t believe people who claim there’s a big festival at Gangaramaya Temple or that your hotel or a temple is closed. If you accept their offer of alternative transport, you’ll end up in an overpriced gem shop.
