Bilbao is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, and we visited it in February on our way to Portugal. It’s located in the Basque Country in northern Spain. The city is best known as the home of the Guggenheim Museum of modern art, but trust me — you’ll fall in love with it even if art isn’t really your thing.

You absolutely shouldn’t miss the Guggenheim Museum — this iconic building houses an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art. It’s one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks and was designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry.
Bilbao also has a beautiful old town, and if you’re there, don’t forget to visit the local market: Mercado de la Ribera. This large traditional market is the perfect place to sample authentic Basque food and discover local culinary traditions.

San Sebastián – For Foodies and Surfers
San Sebastián, also known as Donostia in Basque, is a stunning city on Spain’s northern coast, sitting on the Atlantic shoreline in the Basque Country.
San Sebastián is one of the world’s most important gastronomic destinations, particularly famous for its high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants. The city is regarded as a foodie paradise and offers some of the best culinary experiences in Spain — and indeed the world.

Visit, for example, Arzak, a family-run restaurant led by chef Juan Mari Arzak and his daughter Elena, or Mugaritz, headed by chef Andoni Luis Aduriz, which holds two Michelin stars.
One of San Sebastián’s main attractions is La Concha beach, famous for its fine white sand. The city itself is also stunning — make sure to visit the Basilica of Saint Vincent and Plaza de la Constitución.

For the best views of the city and surrounding landscape, take a trip up Monte Igueldo. A funicular takes you to the top of the hill, where you can soak in the panoramic views.

Barcelona – Long Weekend in Spain
Barcelona is the ideal destination for a long weekend in Spain. One of Barcelona’s biggest draws is its architecture. The city is home to the famous architect Antoni Gaudí, known for his remarkable buildings such as Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and Casa Batlló.
We’d highly recommend buying tickets in advance — even outside peak season — through GetYourGuide. While you can buy tickets on the spot, the queues can be horrendous. Our relatives ignored this advice and ended up not getting into Sagrada Familia at all.
Beyond history and architecture, Barcelona is also famous for its beautiful beaches stretching along the coastline.
Art lovers will find plenty of galleries and museums to explore. The local art and culture scene is incredibly vibrant, and there’s always something going on. Visiting places like the Museu Picasso or Fundació Joan Miró is an absolute must.

Where to Stay in Barcelona
If you’re on a tight budget, a great hostel is Sant Jordi Hostels Gracia. For good-quality accommodation that won’t break the bank, try Hotel Granvia, which is housed in a gorgeous 19th-century building.
We drove to Barcelona by car with our dogs, so our options were limited. We ended up choosing Hotel Gaudí, which has a breathtaking rooftop view of Palau Güell. The rooms themselves are quite small though, and the hotel has seen better days. 😁
Madrid
Madrid is Spain’s most visited city, and a large number of visitors come here for the football.
Football in Madrid is more than just a sport — it’s a passion that runs through the very heart of this vibrant city. Two world-famous clubs, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, call this city home, each with its own unique history and fiercely loyal fanbase. Real Madrid, based at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu stadium, is one of the most successful football clubs in history, known for its star players and record-breaking trophy haul.

On the other side of the city, Atlético Madrid plays at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium and is known for its cohesive team play and strong fighting spirit.
Visiting Madrid during the football season is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for any football fan.
If football isn’t your thing, no worries — you can visit the Royal Palace (Palacio Real) or the Moorish-influenced architecture. Art lovers will find the Museo del Prado, where you can admire works by famous Spanish painters.

Tips and Tricks for Your Vacation
Don’t Overpay for Flights
Search for flights on Kayak. It’s our favorite search engine because it scans the websites of all airlines and always finds the cheapest connection.
Book Your Accommodation Smartly
The best experiences we’ve had when looking for accommodation (from Alaska to Morocco) are with Booking.com, where hotels, apartments, and entire houses are usually the cheapest and most widely available.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Good travel insurance will protect you against illness, accidents, theft, or flight cancellations. We’ve had a few hospital visits abroad, so we know how important it is to have proper insurance arranged.
Where we insure ourselves: SafetyWing (best for everyone) and TrueTraveller (for extra-long trips).
Why don’t we recommend any Czech insurance company? Because they have too many restrictions. They set limits on the number of days abroad, travel insurance via a credit card often requires you to pay medical expenses only with that card, and they frequently limit the number of returns to the Czech Republic.
Find the Best Experiences
Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can book guided walks, trips, skip-the-line tickets, tours, and much more. We always find some extra fun there!
