At check-in, a receptionist fastens a plastic wristband around your wrist, a bellhop takes your suitcase, and you find yourself holding a welcome drink beside a pool stretching all the way to the sea. From that moment on, you pay for nothing: not dinner, coffee on the beach or a mojito at the bar at two in the morning. This is the promise of a Punta Cana all-inclusive holiday.
If you know all-inclusive resorts in Turkey or Egypt, expect Punta Cana to work differently. Resorts are enormous, some with more than a thousand rooms and over ten restaurants. Beaches are public by law, so vendors walk past the sun loungers, and à la carte restaurants usually require advance reservations.

How Caribbean all-inclusive works (and what is really included)

Everything revolves around the wristband you receive at check-in. It unlocks food, drinks and most resort activities, from the buffet and pool bars to the beach bar. In larger properties, different room categories have different wristband colours, so staff can immediately tell where you have access.
The main buffet is usually open almost around the clock, but à la carte restaurants are different. Large resorts may have more than ten, yet you normally need to reserve them in advance and some limit the number of visits per stay. Check the exact rules on the resort website before booking.
Alcohol is included, but the quality varies. Basic packages generally mean local brands and house rum. Premium or club-level categories may include branded spirits and better wines, or you can pay extra for them.
Preferred Club, Excellence Club and Mirage Club all follow a similar idea: a higher service tier within the same resort. For more money, you may get a private lounge, pool, beach area, concierge and better drinks. It can be worthwhile in huge complexes where a quieter corner makes a difference. At Majestic Mirage, Mirage Club is also adults only (18+).
Beaches in the Dominican Republic are public by law. The resort provides loungers, towels and service, but the sand belongs to everyone, so tour and souvenir sellers may pass even in front of the most luxurious Cap Cana hotel. A friendly “no, gracias” is usually enough.
Tipping is customary in the Dominican Republic even at all-inclusive resorts. Bring small US dollar bills for bartenders, housekeeping staff, bellhops and à la carte servers. Extras that may not be included are off-site excursions, spa treatments, and sometimes Wi-Fi or an in-room safe—ask before booking.
When to go, how much it costs and getting there
The Caribbean has two seasons, and you’ll notice both on your bill. December to April is the dry season, with the best weather and highest prices. June to November is hurricane season and generally the cheapest time to visit. The risk of a tropical storm disrupting your plans is real, so consider cancellation insurance.
Flights to Punta Cana from abroad usually involve one connection, often in Madrid, Frankfurt or Paris, and the entire trip takes over 12 hours. The Dominican tourist card is normally included in the airfare; check the current requirements before travelling.
You’ll land at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). From there, Cap Cana is around 15 minutes away, Bávaro takes 20–30 minutes depending on the resort, and Uvero Alto is nearly an hour away. With young children, that extra transfer time matters after a long flight.
Resort prices depend mainly on the area and type of guest. Bávaro offers the best value but is busiest. Cap Cana is gated, quieter and more expensive, while Uvero Alto is peaceful and has many adults-only resorts, but takes longer to reach. Bávaro: Punta Cana’s main beach
Nine kilometres of white sand, followed by one resort entrance after another. Bávaro Beach is the heart of Punta Cana, home to huge resorts with thousands of rooms, water parks and nightclubs. The neighbouring Arena Gorda and Macao beaches are also included in this area. Bávaro is ideal if you want the best value and easy airport transfers, but it is also the busiest part of the destination.
1. Majestic Mirage Punta Cana (Bávaro, Punta Cana)
Majestic Mirage is an all-suite resort. Five buildings make up the adults-only Mirage Club, while two belong to the Family Club. Mirage Club has 358 suites with VIP service; swim-up suites add a private garden, direct pool access, a Bali-style lounger and an outdoor hot tub. Both sections receive Majestic Supreme services, including à la carte dining and golf. Check which section you are booking: Mirage Club does not accept guests under 18.
2. Barceló Bávaro Palace (Bávaro, Punta Cana)
This is a city within a resort, with more than 1,000 rooms, family rooms, a two-kilometre beach and an internal train. Four pools include a semi-Olympic pool, an adults-only pool and a children’s pool. Pirates Island has wave pools and slides, while the smaller water park is designed for young children. Add 11 restaurants, a casino, nightclubs, theatre, spa, escape room and sports facilities. It suits families and groups who want everything nearby, not travellers seeking silence.
3. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana (Macao, Punta Cana)
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana has 1,800 rooms in eight buildings on Macao Beach. Its 121-acre grounds include 13 pools, four pool bars, a lazy river, 15 restaurants, 12 bars, three nightclubs, a spa, golf course and one of the Caribbean’s largest casinos. It is best for couples, groups and families with older children who enjoy music and activity rather than quiet.
4. Majestic Elegance Punta Cana (Bávaro, Punta Cana)
Majestic Elegance serves breakfast beside the beach and combines a family section with an adults-only zone. Seven restaurants offer international cuisine, and room categories include swim-up junior suites and oceanfront suites. It’s a good choice if you want Majestic service without the all-suite concept of Mirage.
5. Riu Palace Macao (Arena Gorda, Punta Cana)
Riu Palace Macao is an adults-only resort with 476 rooms, four pools, six restaurants and eight bars. Elite Club swim-up rooms provide direct access to the water. Guests can also use Riu Splash Water World, making it a strong option for couples and groups of adults who still want slides and activities.
6. Lopesan Costa Bávaro (Bávaro, Punta Cana)
Lopesan Costa Bávaro has 1,042 rooms and seven freshwater pools, including a two-level infinity pool. Two buffets, seven themed restaurants, two beach clubs and THE BOULEVARD—with an ice-cream shop, café, juice bar and sports bar—make it suitable for families and couples who like modern, large-scale resorts.
7. Majestic Colonial Punta Cana (Bávaro, Punta Cana)
Majestic Colonial is the oldest of the three Majestic resorts in Punta Cana. It offers both family and adults-only sections, seven restaurants and ground-floor swim-up rooms with gardens, loungers, direct pool access and outdoor hot tubs.
8. Riu Republica (Arena Gorda, Punta Cana)
Riu Republica is a large adults-only party resort with over 1,382 rooms, eight pools, three swim-up bars and a 900 m² main pool. Splash Water World has four slides, while ten restaurants cover everything from Italian and Asian fusion to steak, jerk and Indian food.
9. Grand Palladium Punta Cana (Bávaro, Punta Cana)
Grand Palladium Punta Cana has 537 rooms and belongs to a four-resort complex with over 2,000 rooms. Guests can access eight à la carte restaurants, five show-cooking restaurants and 25 bars across the complex. Four free-form pools and a whirlpool bath in every room make it especially practical for families and groups.
Cap Cana: a luxurious enclave with a marina
Behind the gate on Punta Cana’s southern edge, the atmosphere changes. Cap Cana is a gated district with a marina, Punta Espada golf course and beaches where you won’t fight for a lounger. It is ideal for couples, honeymoons and anyone who prefers waves to poolside entertainment. Prices are noticeably higher than in Bávaro, but the transfer from Punta Cana airport is short.
10. Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa (Cap Cana)
Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa is an AAA Five Diamond adults-only resort on Juanillo Beach. It offers suites only, from Junior Suites and Preferred Club categories to bungalows. Ten dining concepts include seven à la carte restaurants, a buffet, grill and café. Preferred Club adds a lounge, separate pool, private beach section and concierge.
11. Sanctuary Cap Cana (Cap Cana)
Sanctuary Cap Cana resembles a Spanish colonial town on a cliff rather than a typical resort. This adults-only Marriott Luxury Collection property has 324 suites, all with a balcony or terrace, daily restocked minibar and coffee maker. It is about 15 minutes from the airport. Restaurants include The Steakhouse, Casa Bella, Capriccio, Blue Marlin and Wok.
12. Eden Roc Cap Cana (Cap Cana)
Eden Roc Cap Cana is, according to its website, the Dominican Republic’s only Relais & Châteaux hotel. It has just 65 villas and suites, including private-pool villas and beachfront suites. Guests have access to Caletón Beach Club, a Blue Flag beach, infinity pool and BLUE Grill + Bar. Three restaurants include fine-dining Mediterraneo.
13. Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana (Cap Cana)
Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana is the most relaxed of the Cap Cana options. The adults-only Hammock section and family Wave section keep the two experiences separate. Hammock has 13 room types, a main pool and swim-up bar, while Island Reserve Villas offer private two-storey buildings, some with their own pool. Fins Up! Fitness is open 24 hours.
Adults only: resorts for couples
Adults-only resorts mean no children, quieter pools and more à la carte dining. In Punta Cana, many are concentrated in Uvero Alto in the north. The transfer is longer than to Bávaro, but the beaches are generally quieter. Always check the minimum age, as some resorts do not accept teenagers.
14. Excellence Punta Cana (Uvero Alto, Punta Cana)
Excellence Punta Cana is an adults-only resort of low buildings hidden in tropical gardens, with spacious suites rather than towers. Excellence Club adds private pools, a separate beach section and Magna restaurant. It suits couples who want privacy and a traditional resort atmosphere.
15. Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana (Bávaro, Punta Cana)
All 639 suites at Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana have a balcony or terrace with a private hot tub. Six restaurants cover French, Mexican, Asian fusion, sushi and teppanyaki, and no reservations are required. Guests can also use restaurants at neighbouring Dreams Royal Beach. Preferred Club adds a lounge, pool, concierge and better minibar.
16. Excellence El Carmen (Uvero Alto, Punta Cana)
With 23 pools, Excellence El Carmen is a modern, design-led adults-only resort in Uvero Alto. It contrasts with the garden style of Excellence Punta Cana through contemporary architecture, clean lines and ocean views. Ask which pool is closest to your suite when booking.
17. Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana (Uvero Alto, Punta Cana)
Some of the 347 suites at Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana have swim-up access or a private terrace pool. This adults-only resort offers five outdoor pools, a beach, eight restaurants and seven bars, with Italian, Asian, French, Mediterranean, Mexican and Dominican cuisine. Room service is available around the clock.
18. Zoëtry Agua Punta Cana (Uvero Alto, Punta Cana)
Zoëtry Agua Punta Cana is a boutique adults-only resort with just 92 suites and no wristbands. Its Endless Privileges concept includes à la carte dining, branded drinks, daily minibar replenishment and 24-hour room service. A coral reef lies off the beach, and the stay includes a 20-minute spa treatment and 45-minute horseback ride on the beach.
With children: water parks and kids’ clubs
Family holidays in Punta Cana are often decided by one question: what will the children do when they get bored of the beach? The best family resorts answer with water parks, age-specific kids’ clubs and family rooms. Check current “kids stay free” promotions directly with the hotel, as restrictions vary.
19. Dreams Royal Beach Punta Cana (Bávaro, Punta Cana)
Dreams Royal Beach Punta Cana has a water park with seven slides and a children’s splash park, four pools and 373 suites, with family rooms for up to six guests. Explorer’s Club welcomes children aged 3–12 with crafts, treasure hunts and beach camping; teens aged 13–17 have Core Zone. Water-park opening hours and height limits apply.
20. Dreams Onyx Punta Cana (Uvero Alto, Punta Cana)
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana is on a quieter beach in Uvero Alto. Its family section has a pool with slides, a lazy river, three restaurants and both kids’ clubs. Parents get suites with 24-hour room service and balconies or terraces with hot tubs. It suits families happy to spend most of the week inside the resort.
21. Paradisus Palma Real (Bávaro, Punta Cana)
Paradisus Palma Real separates its experiences through Royal Service for adults and Family Concierge for families. The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real adds 190 suites, including family and swim-up suites. Check carefully when booking: Royal Service is adults only.
22. Club Med Punta Cana (Punta Cana)
Club Med Punta Cana takes a different approach, focusing on a Circus School with trapezes, aerial silks and juggling rather than a large water park. The children’s club has its own pool, water games, playground and baby-feeding room. Adults can retreat to Zen Oasis, an adults-only pool area. Accommodation ranges from family rooms to Exclusive Collection suites.
The rest of the Caribbean: Jamaica, Saint Lucia and Turks & Caicos
Since you are crossing the Atlantic anyway, compare Punta Cana with other islands. Jamaica offers resorts on private peninsulas and islands, Saint Lucia has green hills and overwater bungalows, and Turks & Caicos has the white sand of Grace Bay and a standout family resort. The Dominican Republic usually wins on price and logistics; these islands offer more quiet and a less massive feel.

24. Excellence Oyster Bay (Falmouth, Jamaica)
Excellence Oyster Bay occupies its own peninsula and is adults only. Even the smallest suite measures 800 square feet (around 74 m²) and includes a two-person hot tub. There are 11 restaurants, ten bars, three pool bars, two pools, a private beach and spa. Excellence Club adds Bvlgari toiletries, private check-in and hydrotherapy.
25. Sandals Grande St. Lucian (Gros Islet, Saint Lucia)
Sandals Grande St. Lucian sits on a narrow peninsula between Pigeon Island and Rodney Bay. It has 311 suites, four pools, seven bars and 12 restaurants. Nine overwater bungalows added in 2017 have glass floor panels, outdoor tubs and hammocks above the sea. Prices start at around $1,900 per night per person for these bungalows, so compare carefully.
26. Sandals Royal Caribbean (Montego Bay, Jamaica)
Sandals Royal Caribbean is being renovated and will reopen as Sandals Caribbean Cay on 18 December 2026. The redesigned property will add 84 rooms, SkyPool and swim-up suites, plus a private island with a beach, freshwater pool, swim-up bar, Thai restaurant and Balinese-style spa. Check both names when researching rates and reviews.
27. Couples Negril (Negril, Jamaica)
Couples Negril is a smaller, quieter adults-only resort on Seven Mile Beach. Rooms have balconies, deep tubs and minibars restocked according to your preferences. Guests can use the au naturel beach and pool area, as well as sister resort Couples Swept Away. Catamaran cruises, diving, windsurfing and sailing are included. Reserve the sunset catamaran early because places are limited.
Practical guide: what to pack, tipping and safety
Bring small US dollar bills for tips. You do not need to tip everyone every time, but bartenders, bellhops, housekeeping staff and à la carte servers appreciate it. On arrival, reserve your à la carte restaurants for the whole stay. Check the evening dress code: men may need long trousers and closed shoes; swimwear, tank tops and flip-flops are often not allowed. Light linen clothing works almost everywhere.
Pack insect repellent, high-factor sunscreen and water shoes. Sea urchins can occur in some coastal areas, and light evening clothes help with both dress codes and strong air conditioning. Electrical sockets are American style, so bring an adapter.
Do not drink tap water, even at a luxury resort. Use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth; resorts usually provide it. Ice and drinks at resort bars are generally made with filtered water. If you have a sensitive stomach, start with cooked food and fruit you peel yourself.
Because Dominican beaches are public, vendors may pass in front of your resort. A calm, clear “no, gracias” usually works. Do not buy anything under pressure, agree on prices before a service and pay after it. Book excursions with reputable operators and confirm whether lunch, drinks, entrance fees and hotel pickup are included.
Hurricane season runs from early summer to late autumn. If you travel then, choose cancellation insurance that explicitly covers natural disasters and cancelled flights, and make sure your travel medical insurance has a sufficient limit.

If you want to save and don’t mind the risk of rain, you can try the shoulder season with good cancellation insurance.
