Albufeira in Portugal is a town with two very different faces, and honestly, I don’t think there’s anywhere else in Portugal where picking the right area matters quite as much as it does here. We’ve been coming to the Algarve regularly since 2020, and this town has always fascinated us with how it manages to offer completely different types of holiday just a few kilometres apart.
On one side you’ll find charming historic lanes lined with whitewashed houses, where the air smells of coffee and sea spray. On the other, buzzing neon bars and endless parties. If you’re heading to Albufeira, your choice of neighbourhood will shape your experience far more than the hotel itself.
Whether you’re travelling to Albufeira with kids or heading out for a big night, the right area makes the decision for you. So let’s go through them one by one, from the sleepy Old Town to the pulsing Strip, and for each one I’ll tell you who it suits and where to book your hotel.
TL;DR
- Best for families with kids: Definitely take a look at Alfagar Aparthotel, with its own water park and handy kitchenettes, or the sprawling, leafy Balaia Golf Village.
- Best for couples and peace and quiet: A great choice is the adults-only Aqua Pedra dos Bicos, or the boutique paradise of Vila Joya for anyone after absolute luxury and privacy.
- Best luxury resort: It’s no accident that Pine Cliffs holds the title of one of the most beautiful resorts in the entire Algarve, with the ever-popular EPIC SANA hot on its heels.
- Best location right in the centre: If you want to step straight out of your room onto the beach in the Old Town, Hotel Sol e Mar even has its own lift down to the ocean.
- Best value for money with all-inclusive: For a carefree holiday at a sensible price, travellers often choose Muthu Clube Praia da Oura or the quieter Auramar Beach Resort.
Which area to choose and where to stay
As I mentioned at the start, Albufeira isn’t one single, uniform town. It’s more of a patchwork of several neighbourhoods, each attracting a completely different type of traveller. Let’s break them down in detail so you know exactly what you’re getting into.
The Old Town is the heart of the whole area and captures that true Portuguese romance. You’ll find cobbled lanes, picturesque little squares and traditional white houses tumbling down towards the gorgeous Pescadores beach. This area is ideal for families and couples, offering plenty of lovely cafés and a more relaxed evening atmosphere, with everything comfortably within walking distance and no need to hire a car.
The Strip (Areias de São João) is, by contrast, the epicentre of nightlife and wild parties. It sits about two kilometres from the Old Town and is lined with neon bars, clubs and pubs where the music often plays until four in the morning. Families with children should steer well clear of this area, but if you’re coming with a group of friends to have fun and dance the night away, you’ll absolutely love it here.
Praia da Oura works as a kind of compromise between beach relaxation and nightlife. It’s within walking distance of the Strip, so the fun is just a short stroll away, but during the day you can enjoy the lovely promenade and lively beach atmosphere. It’s an ideal choice for young couples or groups who don’t mind a bit more buzz.
Olhos d’Água was once a sleepy fishing village about a ten-minute drive east of central Albufeira. Today it’s a beautiful, peaceful spot for families and older travellers looking for rest and a local atmosphere. It’s also just a short hop from the famous Praia da Falésia beach, though you’ll need to grab a taxi to reach central Albufeira itself.
Santa Eulália and Balaia form a beautiful resort zone full of pine groves and manicured gardens. The beaches here are noticeably quieter and the whole area feels wonderfully laid-back. It’s the perfect compromise for anyone who wants a peaceful resort but still wants the option of popping into town for dinner in just a few minutes.
Praia da Falésia is a chapter all of its own, boasting six kilometres of stunning red cliffs and regularly appearing on lists of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Accommodation here is geared more towards luxury resorts and quiet stays, which will appeal most to couples in love and more discerning travellers who like to hire a car to get around.
São Rafael and Sesmarias lie to the west of the centre and hide some of the prettiest little golden coves, such as Coelha beach. You won’t find any giant complexes here, but rather smaller boutique hotels and absolute tranquillity, which draws mainly adult travellers longing to escape the crowds.
When to go and when to book your hotel
If you’re planning a trip for 2026, don’t underestimate the importance of booking early. Albufeira is one of Europe’s most popular destinations and the best hotels vanish at an incredible rate. The main summer season runs from late June to early September, when prices are at their peak and it gets seriously busy everywhere.
For the summer holidays I’d recommend booking your accommodation at least six to eight months ahead, otherwise you’ll be left with only the overpriced or lower-rated options. If you can, go in May, June, or later in the autumn during September and October. The weather in Albufeira, Portugal is still fantastic for swimming, hotel prices drop by up to a third, and you’ll dodge the biggest crowds.
13 best hotels in Albufeira for every budget
When choosing these specific hotels, I focused on careful research and traveller reviews to cover all the popular neighbourhoods and budgets. Every option mentioned is among the best in its category.

1. Pine Cliffs, a Luxury Collection Resort
This five-star gem sits in the Olhos d’Água area, right above the famous Falésia beach, and it’s often described as the most beautiful resort in the entire Algarve. The complex is so vast that it has its own nine-hole golf course, eight pools and a top-class spa centre. Prices sit at the very highest tier, but for your money you get absolute perfection.
You reach the ocean via a private panoramic lift that whisks you down beneath the majestic red cliffs. The rooms are decorated in an elegant Portuguese style and the grounds offer something for every age. 💡 Tip: This resort is absolutely ideal for discerning families and couples who are after luxury and superb dining, and who have no desire to leave the hotel grounds during their holiday.

2. EPIC SANA Algarve
Right next door, above Falésia beach, you’ll find another five-star legend, this one with a slightly more modern and minimalist design. EPIC SANA boasts five outdoor and two indoor pools, a fantastic spa and five different restaurants that will satisfy even the biggest foodies.
In reviews, travellers absolutely rave about the wonderful beach access through the fragrant pine forest, which lends the whole place an incredibly romantic feel. There’s also a highly rated kids’ club for children aged 4 to 12. 💡 Tip: A great choice for anyone who loves modern design and wants to combine a wellness break with walks along one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches.

3. Vila Joya
Heading west to the peaceful Galé area, we come to this exceptional boutique hotel with just thirteen rooms and suites. Vila Joya is the embodiment of intimate luxury and boasts a restaurant crowned with two Michelin stars, making it an absolute paradise for lovers of fine dining.
The ratings sit at the very top and the hotel is just a few steps from a beautiful golden beach. The atmosphere is incredibly personal here; the staff know every guest by name and cater to your every conceivable whim. 💡 Tip: This is the ultimate destination for a honeymoon or anniversary, where adult couples can enjoy complete privacy, first-class care and unforgettable culinary experiences.

4. Alfagar Aparthotel
Now we move into the family holiday category, where this four-star complex in the Santa Eulália and Balaia area absolutely dominates. Alfagar holds a fantastic rating of around 8.8 on Booking.com and scores highly mainly because it offers spacious apartments with a fully equipped kitchenette, a huge advantage when travelling with small children.
The complex is surrounded by greenery and features an enormous outdoor and indoor pool, plus its own water park with slides that you’ll struggle to drag the kids away from. 💡 Tip: A clear winner for families with children looking for great value for money, wanting the option to cook their own meals and appreciating plenty of water attractions right on site.

5. Grande Real Santa Eulália Resort & Spa
This sprawling four-to-five-star resort stretches out right above the beautiful Santa Eulália beach and strikes a great middle ground between luxury and a family holiday. Guests particularly praise the beachfront location and free shuttle bus, which will whisk you into the bustling centre of Albufeira whenever you fancy.
While some reviews note that certain parts of the hotel could do with a little modernisation, the overall impression, the vast spa and the lovely pools more than make up for that minor gripe. 💡 Tip: An ideal choice for families and couples who want to stay beside one of the most beautiful and peaceful beaches while still needing easy access to town.

6. Balaia Golf Village
If you prefer villa-style accommodation surrounded by beautiful nature, this expansive resort in the Balaia area is sure to win you over. The complex is made up of numerous apartments and smaller villas, set within a huge garden full of greenery and mature trees, giving a wonderful sense of privacy.
As the name suggests, golf lovers will be in their element, but thanks to its many pools and playgrounds it’s also hugely popular for family holidays at very reasonable prices. 💡 Tip: I’d recommend it to families who prefer space, peace and greenery over busy hotel corridors, and who don’t mind a short walk to the beach.

7. Vila Galé Cerro Alagoa
This very popular four-star hotel has one enormous advantage: its strategic location. It sits exactly halfway between the historic Old Town and the buzzing Strip, so you’ll have both of the main entertainment hubs within comfortable walking distance.
The rooms are very spacious and clean, and the hotel offers a lovely outdoor pool plus a wellness zone with an indoor pool, which you’ll especially appreciate on visits outside the main summer season. It also sits at a very pleasant mid-range price point. 💡 Tip: Perfect for couples and families with older children who want to explore the town mostly on foot and are after quality accommodation without needing to hire a car.

8. Hotel Sol e Mar
If your main priority is staying right on the beach while being in the very heart of the action, look no further. This four-star hotel in the Old Town enjoys a truly exceptional location, where guests can take the lift from the hotel lobby straight down onto the sand of Praia do Peneco beach.
The balconies offer breathtaking ocean views, and the moment you step out of the hotel you find yourself among picturesque lanes full of traditional restaurants, shops and cafés. 💡 Tip: The best choice for anyone who wants the sea literally beneath their window and loves evening strolls through the historic centre with no need to travel anywhere.

9. Aqua Pedra dos Bicos Design Beach Hotel
Now we move into the category of hotels reserved solely for adult travellers (18+, to be precise). This modern four-star design hotel sits in a quieter spot near the Strip and offers guests direct private access to the beautiful Bicos beach, which you reach via wooden steps.
The interiors are incredibly stylish and spotlessly clean, and the whole concept is focused on peace and relaxation. Yet a walk of just 500 metres will bring you to some of the best restaurants and bars. 💡 Tip: Fantastic for younger and older couples alike who love modern design, want total peace on the beach during the day, but are happy to head into town for a night out.

10. Real Bellavista Hotel & Spa
This four-star hotel near the centre regularly wins awards for best value for money. Although it isn’t right on the beach, it offers a free shuttle bus that will get you to the ocean within a few minutes, and it makes up for the distance with excellent facilities, headed by an extensive spa centre.
Guests have four pools to choose from, two of which are reserved for adults only, a great compromise for a hotel that otherwise happily welcomes families with children too. 💡 Tip: I’d recommend it to budget-conscious travellers who don’t want to compromise on the standard of a four-star hotel with quality facilities and wellness services.

11. NAU São Rafael Suites
If you’re longing to escape the bustle of town, this luxury suite complex on the western coast is an absolute gem. It sits just a short distance from São Rafael and Coelha beaches, famous for their golden cliffs and calm coves, which feel far more intimate than the long beaches to the east.
The rooms are designed as spacious apartments, the level of service is very high, and the whole Sesmarias area guarantees a quiet, undisturbed holiday far from the big crowds. 💡 Tip: An ideal retreat for couples seeking romance and peace who don’t mind having to take a taxi or hire a car to reach central Albufeira.

12. Muthu Clube Praia da Oura
For fans of carefree, full-service stays, this popular all-inclusive resort is a great option. It sits right beside the popular Praia da Oura beach and has recently undergone a partial refurbishment. Guests have access to an incredible twelve different restaurants and bars, so the food never gets boring.
Its location beside Oura beach means you’re right in the centre of the beach action and just a stone’s throw from the nightlife, making it a very lively, energetic place. 💡 Tip: Great for families with older children and groups of friends who want all-inclusive comfort, plenty of activities and a close connection to Albufeira’s livelier side.

13. Auramar Beach Resort
Our final tip is aimed at travellers looking for an affordable all-inclusive holiday. This three-star complex is built on the cliffs right above the Atlantic in the Praia dos Alemães area and offers unbeatable views and very pleasant prices even in peak season.
Although the facilities are a little older and simpler, the great location within walking distance of the centre and the friendly atmosphere make Auramar a very popular base for undemanding holidaymakers. 💡 Tip: A budget choice for families and couples who want to take advantage of all-inclusive dining but would rather put the money they save towards trips around the Algarve.
How to choose the right hotel and tips to help you decide
If you’re still torn, try answering a few basic questions. Travelling with young kids and mainly after peace and quiet? Focus on the eastern part around Santa Eulália and Olhos d’Água, where you’ll find great aparthotels with kitchenettes, or opt for the historic Old Town, where everything is at your fingertips.
Planning a wild stag or hen do, or nights spent dancing? Then the only right choice is The Strip and the area around Oura beach. On the other hand, if you want to enjoy some romance for two, look for boutique and adults-only hotels to the west in São Rafael, or treat yourself to the luxury resorts above Falésia beach.
We also love coming to Albufeira for the fantastic vegan food, and if you feel the same way, I’d definitely recommend visiting spots like Veggiemomi or the renowned The Veggie Café Albufeira, where we always tuck into fresh plant-based specialities and excellent coffee with plant milk. For great meat-free pasta, head to the Italian restaurant Il Brigante right in the Old Town.

Frequently asked questions
And finally, here are the most common questions about staying in Albufeira.
Which is the best area for families with children?
The most peaceful and practical base for families is the Old Town, where you have everything within walking distance, or eastern areas like Santa Eulália and Olhos d’Água. You’ll find plenty of family aparthotels with kitchenettes and a gentle entry into the sea. Definitely avoid the area of The Strip.
Where to stay if we don’t want to rent a car?
If you’re planning a holiday without a car, your best bet is to stay right in the Old Town or near Praia dos Alemães beach. In these areas you can easily walk to the beach, restaurants and shops, and for longer distances there are reliable hotel shuttles or taxis.
Is The Strip really that noisy?
Yes, The Strip is the busiest party zone in all of Algarve. Bars and clubs play music often until four in the morning and the streets are full of groups celebrating stag and hen parties. For a peaceful night’s sleep, it’s necessary to stay far enough away, ideally in the Old Town or in the outskirts.
What are the most beautiful beaches in Albufeira?
The most beautiful scenery is considered to be Praia da Falésia with six kilometers of red cliffs. Beautiful and peaceful golden coves can be found at São Rafael and Coelha beaches. The main city beach Pescadores is ideal for families thanks to easy access from the centre, while Praia da Oura is known for its livelier atmosphere.
Albufeira, or rather Vilamoura?
Albufeira is more budget-friendly, more diverse, and offers both wild entertainment and family peace depending on the chosen neighborhood. Vilamoura, on the other hand, is a more mature, luxurious, and significantly more expensive resort aimed at golfers and discerning couples seeking absolute tranquility, but with less traditional Portuguese atmosphere.
How to get from Faro Airport to your hotel?
International Airport Faro is located about 40 to 46 kilometres from Albufeira. The fastest and most convenient way is a pre-booked transfer or taxi, which will take you directly to your hotel in approximately 35 to 40 minutes. Prices for a smaller car for three people start at around 45 euros.
Where can I find adults-only hotels?
If you’re looking for accommodation without children’s screaming, an excellent choice is the stylish design hotel Aqua Pedra dos Bicos near Santa Eulália beach. Several smaller adults-only hotels can also be found right in the streets of the Old Town, and for absolute luxury I recommend the boutique Vila Joya in the Galé area. Tips and Tricks for Your Vacation
Don’t Overpay for Flights
Search for flights on Kayak. It’s our favorite search engine because it scans the websites of all airlines and always finds the cheapest connection.
Book Your Accommodation Smartly
The best experiences we’ve had when looking for accommodation (from Alaska to Morocco) are with Booking.com, where hotels, apartments, and entire houses are usually the cheapest and most widely available.
🚗 Car rental on the roadVerified car rentals in PortugalSearch with the DiscoverCars comparison engine — it compares prices from dozens of local and international rental companies, and most bookings come with free cancellation.

Good travel insurance will protect you against illness, accidents, theft, or flight cancellations. We’ve had a few hospital visits abroad, so we know how important it is to have proper insurance arranged.
Where we insure ourselves: SafetyWing (best for everyone) and TrueTraveller (for extra-long trips).
Why don’t we recommend any Czech insurance company? Because they have too many restrictions. They set limits on the number of days abroad, travel insurance via a credit card often requires you to pay medical expenses only with that card, and they frequently limit the number of returns to the Czech Republic.
