A light installation projects the stained glass windows of the New Cathedral directly onto the square’s pavement, and in the park by the train station the Old Forge with its water wheel comes to life every fifteen minutes. The Upper Austrian city of Linz transforms during Advent into five distinctive markets, each with a completely different atmosphere, so in a single afternoon you’ll experience the bustling historic square around a towering Christmas tree, artisan crafts by the cathedral, and the quiet open fire on Pfarrplatz without Krampus figures or Saint Nicholas parades.
If you’re planning Christmas markets in Austria, Linz is easily accessible from Central Europe and offers convenient direct train connections. All five Christmas markets (traditional outdoor fairs with stalls) are connected Friday through Sunday by a yellow Hop-On Hop-Off Christmas train (a system where you can board and exit for free at any stop). You’ll find something here whether you’re looking for evening mulled wine in a brewery garden with thousands of lights or a family-friendly park with a moving nativity scene.

When do Linz Christmas markets 2026 start (dates overview)
The Advent season in Linz launches in two waves in 2026, so you can head out for pre-Christmas atmosphere as early as mid-November. Opening hours December 24 and after Christmas
On Christmas Eve (Thursday, December 24, 2026), the Advent am Dom and Wintermarkt am Pfarrplatz markets are already closed, as they end the day before. On Hauptplatz and in Volksgarten, December 24 remains open optionally from 9:00 AM–4:00 PM, and a morning stop is also offered at Stiegl-Klosterhof from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM with free entry.
If you arrive in Linz between the holidays, only Winterzauber im Stiegl-Klosterhof continues after Christmas Eve. The operator does not list specific times for the holidays of December 25 and 26, but to close out the year on December 30 and 31, 2026 you can enjoy hot mulled wine from 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM.

Where to stay in Linz for Christmas markets
For accommodation during the Christmas markets in Linz, four neighborhoods make the most sense, from which you can reach the stalls on foot or by tram.
Best neighborhoods
- Altstadt / Hauptplatz: The historic Old Town, from which you can walk to Hauptplatz, Pfarrplatz, and the Danube. The Pöstlingbergbahn railway also departs directly from the main square, making this neighborhood perhaps the best spot for a romantic evening at the markets.
- Landstraße / New Cathedral area: A location in the middle of the action, from which you have Advent am Dom, Klosterhof, and Volksgarten within a 10-minute walk. The tram heading to Hauptplatz passes right under your windows.
- Hauptbahnhof / Volksgarten: If you arrive by train, you have the family-friendly market in Volksgarten right at the station. In this part of the city you’ll typically find more affordable chain hotels.
- Urfahr (left bank of the Danube): From the neighborhood on the other side of the river, you can walk across the Nibelungenbrücke bridge in 10 minutes to Hauptplatz. You’ll have the Ars Electronica Center museum nearby and a good starting point if arriving from the north via the A7 motorway.
Hotel tips in the center
- Austria Classic Hotel Wolfinger Altstadt: A historic hotel in a 15th-century building standing directly on the main square (Hauptplatz 19) at the largest Christmas market.
- Hotel Schwarzer Bär Altstadt: A traditional hotel in the city center (Herrenstraße 9–11) located just a few minutes’ walk from both Hauptplatz and the New Cathedral.
- Hotel am Domplatz: A four-star boutique hotel (Domplatz 5) right next to Mariendom Cathedral and the Advent am Dom market; however, it operates adults-only, so it’s not suitable for families with children.
- Park Inn by Radisson Linz: A chain hotel in the center (Hessenplatz 16–18) located near Landstraße avenue and the New Cathedral.
- ARCOTEL Nike Linz: A hotel on the Danube waterfront (Untere Donaulände 9) near Lentos and Brucknerhaus offering quick motorway access to the A7 and a 10-minute walk to Hauptplatz.

💡 On this map you can compare what’s currently available — you’ll immediately see how much the price changes a few blocks away.
Christkindlmarkt on Hauptplatz
The historic Hauptplatz square hosts the largest Christmas market in the city, organized by ARGE Christkindlmarkt Hauptplatz together with ARGE Weihnachtsmarkt Volksgarten (official website christkindlmarkt-linz.at). Stalls spread around a large Christmas tree and offer handcrafted products and regional specialties. Entry is free and the Pöstlingbergbahn railway departs directly from the square to the hill above the city.

What to taste and buy
Regional specialties fill the air between stalls on the main square, with sausages also on offer. We recommend trying the local sweet specialty Linzer Torte or delicate Linzer Kekse (Linz cookies), accompanied by hot Glühwein (spiced mulled wine) or fruit punch.
We don’t yet have current prices for drinks, but for reference the 2023 price list showed that on Hauptplatz and in Volksgarten mulled wine cost €4.50, orange punch €4 and children’s punch €3.
Collectible mugs and deposit
On Hauptplatz new collectible mugs are sold every year, which you can take home as a souvenir after finishing your drink. In 2023 the refundable deposit on the mug was €2. We were unable to find the current deposit amount.

Volksgarten Christmas market: best for children
When you step off the train, you find yourself practically in the middle of the action, because the city park right by the main station (Am Volksgarten) transforms during Advent into Weihnachtsmarkt im Volksgarten. This park is the best market for families with children, the entire area is comfortably stroller-accessible and entry is free.
Forge, nativity scene and crafts
Children are entertained mainly by moving installations and interactive stops where they can stand for quite a long time. Right in the park stands the Old Forge with a water wheel, whose machinery is set in motion every 15 minutes, and also one of the largest wooden nativity scenes in Austria, which comes to life every 30 minutes. The program includes daily craft demonstrations with opportunities to try your hand, and there’s also a wooden area with quizzes and a wooden xylophone.

Attractions and ferris wheel
The family atmosphere is completed by fairy tales and children’s attractions. The organizer’s website lists a nostalgic ferris wheel among the attractions, though it doesn’t explicitly confirm whether it will be there in 2026.

Advent am Dom and Wintermarkt on Pfarrplatz
When you want to take a break from the busy main markets, just walk a few streets to two more intimate stops in the center. These focus on artisan crafts, local produce and a calmer pre-Christmas atmosphere.

Light show on the cathedral and candle making
At the Mariendom cathedral (New Cathedral, Domplatz 1) takes place Advent am Dom, which is the only Upper Austrian Christmas market with the Austrian quality seal for artistic crafts. Exhibitors rotate in the stalls every week and after dark the square is decorated by the light installation Schneeflockenzauber, which projects the cathedral’s colorful stained glass directly onto the square.
In the cathedral crypt visitors can try Linzer Kerzenziehen, making their own candle from beeswax. On the square you’ll also find the Christmas Wishing Forest, live music, weekend children’s program and Advent concerts right in the cathedral, with free entry to the market.

Pfarrplatz: small market without kitsch
A few steps from Hauptplatz takes place the 14th edition of Wintermarkt am Pfarrplatz (details at wintermarkt-pfarrplatz.at). This small, “gentle” and non-religious winter market does without Krampuses (traditional Alpine demons) and Saint Nicholas figures, so it’s quieter here. In the stalls you can buy only products made by the exhibitors themselves and 2–3 times daily there are live craft demonstrations.
The refreshments give priority to ingredients without artificial sprays and fertilizers. The atmosphere in the middle of the square is completed by an open fire, live music and a charity raffle, with no entry fee.

Winterzauber at Stiegl-Klosterhof
The garden of the Stiegl-Klosterhof brewery restaurant (Landstraße 30) transforms from mid-November until New Year’s Eve into a magical Genuss-Winterwald with thousands of lights, live brass music and a thermofor rental service, which is probably the most practical invention on a December evening. On Monday December 7, 2026 at 17:00 the Krampus parade Linzer Krampuslauf takes place here.
Good to know: as the only Christmas market in Linz it charges admission, but the €5 entry includes one hot drink (mulled wine, punch or non-alcoholic punch), so you don’t actually lose any money. Children up to 6 years have free entry and you can also enter the garden without paying every day after 20:30 or on Christmas Eve (December 24).

Free Christmas train: how to visit all 5 markets
A yellow, festively decorated train called Linz City Express travels between the markets. During the period November 21–December 20, 2026 it runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 15:00 to 19:00 at 30-minute intervals and boarding at all five markets is free.
Route and stops
The train operates in Hop-On Hop-Off mode and connects all the Advent venues in a fixed circuit: Hauptplatz → Neuer Dom → Volksgarten → Landstraße (Klosterhof) → Pfarrplatz → Hauptplatz. At any stop you can get off with the children, explore the stalls and continue on the next service in half an hour.
💡 Tip: The train only runs Friday to Sunday between 15:00 and 19:00, on other days you can comfortably travel the nearly 2 km between Hauptplatz and the main station by tram along Landstraße.
Recommended market tour
Start the afternoon in daylight at Volksgarten by the station, where children can enjoy the forge with water wheel and the moving nativity scene, then move to Landstraße to the Stiegl-Klosterhof garden for a hot drink included in the admission. After dark continue to the New Cathedral for the stained glass light projection and end the evening by the large tree on Hauptplatz, from where it’s just a few steps to the fire on the intimate Pfarrplatz.

How to get to Linz and where to park
While tour operators do organize day trips to Linz, traveling by car or direct train is straightforward from Central Europe (for buses like FlixBus or RegioJet, verify current connections before your trip).
By car from Central Europe
From the Czech Republic the fastest route leads via České Budějovice and the Dolní Dvořiště border crossing, from where you connect via road B310 to expressway S10 and motorway A7 directly to Linz.
- From Prague area: 242 km (approx. 2 h 55 min) via D1 → D3 → České Budějovice → I/3 Dolní Dvořiště / Wullowitz → B310 → S10 → A7 Linz.
- From Brno area: 287 km (approx. 3 h 35 min) via Znojmo → Hollabrunn (S3) → S5 → S33 → A1 Linz (or via Jihlava and České Budějovice).
- From Ostrava area: 451 km (approx. 5 h 10 min) on D1 via Brno and Znojmo to Austrian routes S3, S5, S33 and A1.
In addition to your home country’s motorway vignette you’ll need an Austrian motorway vignette, because sections S10 and A7 (as well as S3, S5, S33 and A1) are tolled. In 2026 a 1-day vignette costs €9.60 (digital only) and a 10-day vignette €12.80, with both digital variants valid immediately after purchase online.
By train to Linz
The main station Linz Hbf is located right by the Volksgarten market and from there you can take a tram nearly 2 km along Landstraße to Hauptplatz. Direct trains run from various European cities. Check current departures in the ÖBB Scotty app or your national railway app.
Train connections from Vienna are frequent and the journey can be nicely combined with a stop at the Christmas markets in Vienna. Timetables change in mid-December, so verify times before your trip in the ÖBB Scotty app or your railway app.
Parking in the center and parking zones
For parking in the center use garages near individual markets: right by the stalls are Parkhaus Hauptplatz and Parkhaus Pfarrplatz, between Landstraße and the main square is Tiefgarage Promenade, by the New Cathedral is Parkhaus Hessenplatz and on the other bank of the Danube by the Nibelungenbrücke bridge is Tiefgarage Lentia City (Urfahr). We were unable to verify prices for garages near the markets, check the list of garages and their operation before your trip.
In streets there are short-term parking zones at €1 per started half hour (Mon–Fri 8:00–18:30, Sat 8:00–12:00, by the station daily 8:00–18:30, max. 30–180 min; also applies Dec. 24 and 31, verify conditions at linz.at). According to ÖAMTC there are free large parking lots further from the center at Urnenfriedhof, Heilham, Ebelsberg and Stadtfriedhof St. Martin with connections to public transport.
💡 Tip: With children and on weekends it’s better to go to Linz by train, because you arrive at Linz Hbf station right by the Volksgarten market and avoid searching for space in garages.
What to combine with a trip to Linz
If you’re staying in Upper Austria for a whole weekend, combine your visit to the stalls with a trip to the hill above the city or to nearby Advent towns.

Pöstlingberg and Grottenbahn
From Hauptplatz, the historic Pöstlingbergbahn railway takes you up to the scenic hilltop (a 2026 return ticket costs €9.00 for adults, €4.50 reduced, Erlebnisticket €13.60; the Linz Card includes public transport rides in Linz). At the top you’ll find the fairytale Grottenbahn cave railway with a dragon train, fairy tales and stalls; dates for 2026 have not yet been announced, but it used to open 10:00–17:00 (Dec 24 until 15:00).

Christkindl and Steyr
About 40 km from Linz, the Christkindl Christmas Post Office (Christkindlweg 6, Steyr) operates, from where you can send a letter with a special Christmas postmark during the period Nov 27–Dec 31, 2026 (Nov 28–Dec 23 Mon–Fri 10:00–16:00, Sat/Sun/holidays 10:00–17:00, Dec 24 9:00–12:00; closed Dec 25–26). In Steyr itself, the Adventdorf am Stadtplatz (Nov 13–Dec 24, 2026) and Christkindlmarkt Promenade (Nov 13–Dec 20, 2026) markets take place.

Freistadt on the way
When traveling from Central Europe, you’ll pass the medieval fortified town of Freistadt about 40 km before Linz. The Gassenadvent event starts here on Nov 20, 2026, and on the weekend of Dec 5–6, 2026, a Christkindlmarkt takes place in the castle courtyard (please verify the date).

Advent cruises on the Danube
From the Wurm & Noé landing stage, the evening Weihnachtszauber cruise departs from Nov 13, 2026 (15 dates at 19:00), a pre-Christmas buffet cruise from Nov 22, 2026, and a St. Nicholas cruise on Dec 5, 2026 at 11:00. You’ll find prices on the operator’s website.
💡 Tip: In bad weather, visit the Ars Electronica Center museum of the future in the Urfahr district, where the Deep Space 8K hall screens a virtual cathedral nativity scene during Advent (dates for 2026 have not yet been announced).

Linz, Salzburg, or Vienna? Which to choose
When deciding between Austrian cities, Linz Christmas markets have a key advantage: accessibility. Of Salzburg, Vienna, and Linz, Linz is closest to many Central European cities (about 3 hours by car). This makes it easy to visit even for a shorter weekend without a tiring journey.
Linz also lies directly on the Vienna → Salzburg railway line, so you can easily combine two markets in one weekend by train and connect with Salzburg Christmas markets or Vienna Christmas markets.
