Whenever I think about travelling with our one-year-old son, it always starts with the same dilemma: we want to see and experience things, but keeping our son Jonáš happy is absolutely essential. When we were planning a weekend in Prague, none of my friends expected us to book a Prague hotel right next to Charles Bridge.
“With a toddler? It’ll be noisy, packed with tourists, and totally uncomfortable,” they warned me. But I took the gamble and chose Domus Balthasar – and it turned out to be the best decision we could have made.

TL;DR
- Domus Balthasar is a surprisingly brilliant choice for families with small children – the enormous rooms provide plenty of space for playing,
- The location right next to Charles Bridge lets you admire Prague without the tourist crowds (because toddlers always wake up early)
- The surrounding area has cafés with kids’ play corners
- No lift isn’t a problem – you can safely leave the pushchair by the entrance
- And parking? Surprisingly easy to sort out using the Mr. Parkit app

An unexpected choice for a family holiday that will win you over
Domus Balthasar is a boutique hotel in a historic building right next to the Lesser Town Bridge Tower – at Charles Bridge. At first glance, it’s exactly the kind of place most parents with small children would avoid – a historic building in the busiest part of the city. But the opposite is true – this hotel is practically made for a city break with a toddler.
The hotel has just eight rooms, all spacious and beautifully appointed. You can choose from generous Deluxe King rooms (40 m²), Royal Suites, and attic studios. For families with children, the Royal Suite is ideal – it features two large beds and enough room for even the most energetic toddlers to roam freely.
A location that lets you see Prague without the crowds
The biggest perk of staying right next to Charles Bridge is being able to take full advantage of your early riser – which most toddlers undeniably are. Our son wakes up around six every morning, which in most situations would be maddening. In the centre of Prague, this “disadvantage” turns into an amazing opportunity to see the city in a completely different light.
Every morning we headed out around seven and had Charles Bridge, Malostranské Square, and the surrounding lanes practically to ourselves. No tourist crowds, no queues – just us, our toddler, and stunning Prague bathed in morning sunlight.
Another advantage is that you don’t need to worry about complicated journeys on public transport. Our son generally only tolerates the pushchair for short distances, so the proximity to all the main attractions was absolutely priceless. From the hotel, you can walk to Prague Castle, Malostranské Square, or across the bridge to the Old Town in just a few minutes.

Parking in the city centre is surprisingly straightforward
Since the hotel is right in the historic centre, it doesn’t have its own car park. That might sound like a drawback at first, but there’s an elegant solution. We used a service called Mr. Parkit, which is essentially the Airbnb of garages.
Here’s how we did it: on the first evening, we parked in a garage near the hotel (more expensive, but practical for unloading all our stuff). For the remaining days, we moved the car to a garage in the Dejvice neighbourhood, where parking was significantly cheaper. This worked perfectly for us because we didn’t need the car at all in the city centre.
Rooms that are made for families
Let’s be honest – tiny hotel rooms are absolutely useless when you’re travelling with an active toddler.
Space to play and relax
The best thing about this hotel is the generously sized rooms. Jonáš had plenty of space to play, things to explore, and we didn’t have to stress in the morning about whether my husband could keep him entertained long enough for me to get ready.
After a long day out, we didn’t feel cooped up – the room offered enough space for all our activities, including a large coffee table where we had a little picnic at the end of the day. It didn’t even matter that we’d forgotten to pack a travel high chair for Jonáš.
Any seasoned parent knows that evenings with a toddler in a cramped hotel room can be a nightmare. Here, it was a breeze.

Temperature on your terms, not the hotel’s
A major plus was the in-room temperature control system. When we arrived, the room was on the cooler side, which we welcomed. We’ve had several unpleasant experiences at other luxury hotels where the heating was cranked up to 25°C and you simply couldn’t sleep – and you couldn’t even open the windows (looking at you, that one hotel in Budapest we’ll never return to).
At Domus Balthasar, we could set the temperature exactly how we wanted it. We quickly adjusted it to a comfortable 21°C and within minutes the room was just right. For me, that’s the perfect sleeping temperature.
Breathtaking views
Our room had a gorgeous view directly onto Charles Bridge and the Lesser Town Bridge Tower. Jonáš kept pointing at the window, and we easily spent 45 minutes a day just watching the people go by below.
A view like that is priceless. Toddlers love watching the hustle and bustle outside, and here we had the most beautiful view Prague has to offer.

Lovely details: Toiletries and amenities
In the bathroom, we found luxury toiletries from Manufaktura, a well-known Czech natural cosmetics brand. I think almost every mum will appreciate quality natural products instead of generic hotel miniatures. Manufaktura is also committed to sustainability – their products are free from mineral oils, silicones, and parabens.
I absolutely fell in love with the jasmine scent in the bathroom. It was a Vila Hermanos Apothecary Sea Salt & Jasmine aroma diffuser, and it complemented the room’s atmosphere so perfectly that I ordered one for myself as soon as we got home – and recommended it to my mother-in-law, who adores jasmine.
The comfortable bed came with luxurious feather pillows and high-quality bedding. Even these seemingly small details make a huge difference – when you return to your hotel exhausted after a full day of exploring with a toddler, you appreciate everything that helps you get a proper night’s rest.

Tips for visiting Prague city centre with a toddler
If you decide to book this hotel, here are a few tips you might find useful.
Morning rituals at The Spot
For families with children, I’d recommend breakfast at the nearby café called The Spot. The hotel does offer the option of breakfast at a partner restaurant, but we preferred this café, which has a kids’ play corner in the back. We could enjoy our coffee and breakfast in peace while our son played with the toys.
I tried the avocado toast, Turkish eggs, porridge, and shakshuka – everything was excellent. It’s a perfect way to start the day before heading out to explore Prague. For parents of small children, a café with a play area is an absolute godsend.
Pushchair and getting around the city
The hotel doesn’t have a lift, which might sound like a problem for families with a full-size pushchair, but in practice it really wasn’t an issue at all. We simply left the pushchair downstairs by the entrance, where it was perfectly safe. For our next trip, I’m planning to get a compact travel stroller, so it won’t be a concern at all.
What the hotel doesn’t have
Domus Balthasar isn’t a typical family hotel with kids’ clubs, children’s pools, and play areas. It’s more of an elegant urban base for families who want to enjoy Prague as adults, not just as parents. A few things you might expect from a standard family hotel aren’t available here – but surprisingly, it really doesn’t matter.
There’s no lift, and you’ll need to keep that in mind. But as I mentioned, you can easily leave the pushchair safely by the entrance, and you won’t use it much in the historic centre anyway.
The hotel also doesn’t have its own restaurant or a standard breakfast buffet. We actually saw this as an advantage – instead of the same old hotel buffet, we discovered new cafés and bistros in the neighbourhood every day. You can have breakfast at the partner café, which is apparently excellent. We just preferred the freedom of going somewhere different each morning.
There’s no on-site parking either, but with Mr. Parkit, it’s an easily solvable issue. We knew about it in advance and came prepared, so it didn’t hold us back in the slightest.

Who is Domus Balthasar perfect for?
This Prague hotel is a perfect choice for families who:
- Want to make the most of the perks of travelling with small children (including the early wake-ups)
- Prefer spacious rooms where a toddler can move around freely
- Dream of experiencing Prague without the tourist crowds
- Are flexible and don’t need traditional “all-inclusive” services

Tips and Tricks for Your Vacation
Don’t Overpay for Flights
Search for flights on Kayak. It’s our favorite search engine because it scans the websites of all airlines and always finds the cheapest connection.
Book Your Accommodation Smartly
The best experiences we’ve had when looking for accommodation (from Alaska to Morocco) are with Booking.com, where hotels, apartments, and entire houses are usually the cheapest and most widely available.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Good travel insurance will protect you against illness, accidents, theft, or flight cancellations. We’ve had a few hospital visits abroad, so we know how important it is to have proper insurance arranged.
Where we insure ourselves: SafetyWing (best for everyone) and TrueTraveller (for extra-long trips).
Why don’t we recommend any Czech insurance company? Because they have too many restrictions. They set limits on the number of days abroad, travel insurance via a credit card often requires you to pay medical expenses only with that card, and they frequently limit the number of returns to the Czech Republic.
