September: 12 Best Places for Your Holiday

Dolomites – holidays for couples, children and dogs

September is absolutely the perfect time to visit Italian Alps because the weather is still pleasant, so you can go camping, while hotel prices and tourist numbers are falling. September is still good for summer hiking and most restaurants and lifts are open.

✅Where to go on holiday in September with your dog, family or couple. Seceda is certainly the most beautiful peak in the Italian Alps, which you can reach by cable car. Dolomites, Italy.
Seceda is certainly the most beautiful peak in the Italian Alps, which you can reach by cable car. Dolomites, Italy.

The Dolomites are ideal for all ages, great for a September holiday with children and dogs. Many of the peaks can be reached by cable car and you can take panoramic walks without having to climb large hills.

You will appreciate the cable cars not only when you are out with your children, but also with your grandparents or if you have a problem with your knees or if you get out of breath quickly. We recommend going to the Ortisei area, where you can go to Seiser Alm and Seceda. In Ortisei you can stay in B&B Villa Angelino or stylish apartments Apt Lara Siela .

If you don’t have any restrictions, you can also go to the area around Cortina, where there are fewer lifts. Do you have a dog? Try affordable accommodation in B&B Hotel Passo Tre Croci Cortina where breakfast is excellent, it’s right on the trek to Lago di Sorapis and the dog was only a small fee.

Other accommodation tips: one of the best rated apartments is Dolomiti Sweet Lodge a Hotel Villa Gaia .

Rome – Long Weekend in September

I generally avoid southern metropolises in the summer because they are often extremely hot, which leads to heatstroke or heatstroke. Rome is ideal to visit in the second half of September and October, when temperatures are again pleasant for walking.

Go to Rome in mid-September

You can read about Rome in detail in our article but what I would recommend you to do is to stay in the centre. Look for a drop-off point near the main station where the train from the airport stops or at one of the bus stops from the airport.

It’s really a great advantage to stay in the centre of Rome, as it’s easy to walk everywhere and the public transport is quite unreliable and even hot. You can also use scooters, but that’s quite expensive.

Iceland – in September for the polar September

September is one of the best months to visit Iceland (here’s the perfect 14-day itinerary ), because the nights are longer and you can see the Northern Lights. At the same time, there’s a good chance of good weather (although you never know in Iceland, so be prepared for anything and don’t leave your winter jacket at home).

Iceland is one of the most beautiful places on our blue planet, and even if only a Viking would want to live there, everyone should visit it at least once in their lifetime.

Where to go on holiday in September? Well, to Iceland.

Holidays in September by the sea: Algarve – Southern Portugal

You can go to the Algarve all year round, it’s nice even in winter, but it’s not for swimming. September is a different story though, you can still swim in the sea, while the temperatures are pleasant to explore those beautiful beaches and cute villages and towns.

We recommend going to southern Portugal for at least 7 days to explore (you can find our itinerary in here ) and be sure to rent a car (we use RentalCars) so you can get around the coast easily.

As a starting point, I recommend our beloved Carvoeiro (one of the best-rated accommodations is definitely Quinta Nova Vale Del Rey, where they have a beautiful pool and excellent breakfast), where it’s not far from anywhere and just a short walk to the most beautiful beach in all of southern Portugal.

If you’re wondering where to go for a September seaside holiday, Portugal is an excellent choice!

Long weekend in Budapest

Budapest is a bit of a hell on earth in the summer, but by September the temperatures are already dropping and hovering around 20-25 degrees, so you can enjoy sunny strolls through Budapest without frying in your own sweat. Budapest is the most beautiful city in Europe, it has a very lively vibe, it’s alive from morning till night.

Budapest is home to many magnificent buildings, amazing cafes and even restaurants, some full of flowers, others in illuminated ruins or on the roof of one of the tallest buildings. There are plenty of design and vintage shops, but you can also have fun with the kids.

Stay right in the centre, the cheapest accommodation is the Flow hostel, which is where we stayed when we saved every penny. For those of you looking for more luxurious accommodation, I recommend Hotel Vision, which we stayed at the year before last and has great breakfasts, location and beautiful rooms. It’s beautiful, but it’s pretty expensive. Aria Hotel Budapest by Library Hotel Collection . The Eurostars Danube Budapest, the Novotel Budapest Danube or the Milford Suites Budapest are such golden centres .

Andalusia – holidays in September by the sea

For lovers of Spain’s spectacular cities and swimming in the warm sea, there is only one possible choice – Andalusia. If you want to go exploring, I’d recommend going towards the end of September, after all Andalusia is home to the hottest cities in Europe ( Cordoba ).

It’s no wonder that Spanish Andalusia is one of the most popular destinations for sightseeing tours, but also for lounging by the sea in September. The Costa de Sol is Spain’s beautiful coastline of beaches and Granada, Seville and Cordoba are some of Europe’s historical and architectural gems.

Barcelona

As in Rome, temperatures in Barcelona usually start to drop in September and by the second half of the month you can safely head out for a long weekend without worrying about getting baked but still be able to swim.

Barcelona is the second most visited city in Spain, so we still recommend that you buy tickets in advance for attractions to avoid queuing (see our article on where to buy them in Barcelona ).

We recommend staying in the centre, as most places can be easily reached on foot, you can try a cheap and bohemian hostel Sant Jordi Hostels Gracia , the happy medium is Hotel Granvia which is located in a beautiful building from the 19th century. century, which has been tastefully and modernly renovated.

If you are looking for a hotel with a nice view, we can recommend Hotel Gaudí which has a spectacular rooftop view of the Palau Güell.

Madeira – island of flowers

This stunning Portuguese island can be visited all year round and the temperatures are still pleasant for hiking. I think it’s one of the most beautiful islands in the world and Lukas and I have travelled to a lot of countries. Madeira is especially good for couples or families with bigger kids. It’s not really ideal for those who want a rollicking beach holiday (for those I’d recommend the Algarve).

In Madeira you’ll find a number of breathtaking hikes and treks, as well as views that are easily accessible by car. A lot of travellers are struggling with whether to stay in one place or move from hotel to hotel. Even though the distances are short for kilometres, it’s worse for time. That’s why we chose to move. You can find our itinerary here.

Western Canada

If you love the mountains and would like to go a little further, we can recommend our heart’s affair – Western Canada. When we lived in Canada, September used to be the best time to explore the mountains. There were not only fewer tourists everywhere, but also more stable weather. Even so, always go into the mountains prepared for anything.

West USA – the most beautiful parks

Summers in the US tend to be absolutely packed with tourists, every year it gets more unbearable. Be prepared for some places to feel crowded even in September, but it’s still a much better time to visit western U.S. parks than, say, July or August. Believe me, I went on both dates and it made a huge difference.

Tuscany – to the sea and exploring

September is absolutely great to visit as well Tuscany, which will be loved by lovers of history, wine and good food, but also by those who want to go to the sea in September.

A great starting point for exploring Siena, you can try to see if accommodation is available Un terrazzo sulla magia , or for the ultimate Tuscany experience, try booking a typical Italian villa with a pool Ca’ Bianca . Lucca is also well placed, with cheaper accommodation including Casamariu .

Spa Saturnia in Tuscany

Tuscany isn’t exactly typical of a summer holiday by the sea, as there are so many wonderful inland towns to explore.

But don’t worry, there are plenty of beaches in Tuscany, so this part of Italy is a great compromise for couples who can’t agree on whether to go on a boating or sightseeing holiday.

Where to go for a cheap holiday? Try wellness hotels

If you are saving money or don’t want to go far, you can go to vacation in the Czech Republic . Choose some wellness stay or wellness hotel where you can relax even if the weather is not nice. And if it is? Make sure you’re in a wellness hotel in the city or in a place where there’s plenty to explore.

Although wellness hotels are more expensive than traditional hotels, you can still save money on airfare if you don’t go abroad. So why not invest in a better hotel where you can be sure to enjoy your holiday even if it rains.

Tips and Tricks for Your Vacation

Don’t Overpay for Flights

Search for flights on Kayak. It’s our favorite search engine because it scans the websites of all airlines and always finds the cheapest connection.

Book Your Accommodation Smartly

The best experiences we’ve had when looking for accommodation (from Alaska to Morocco) are with Booking.com, where hotels, apartments, and entire houses are usually the cheapest and most widely available.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Good travel insurance will protect you against illness, accidents, theft, or flight cancellations. We’ve had a few hospital visits abroad, so we know how important it is to have proper insurance arranged.

Where we insure ourselves: SafetyWing (best for everyone) and TrueTraveller (for extra-long trips).

Why don’t we recommend any Czech insurance company? Because they have too many restrictions. They set limits on the number of days abroad, travel insurance via a credit card often requires you to pay medical expenses only with that card, and they frequently limit the number of returns to the Czech Republic.

Find the Best Experiences

Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can book guided walks, trips, skip-the-line tickets, tours, and much more. We always find some extra fun there!
