Have you ever considered swapping a hotel for a boat on your holiday? 🛳️ You’ll avoid crowded beaches and discover unique corners you never even knew existed. Many interesting places are only accessible by water. On a boat, peace awaits you, a self-guided journey, rarely visited places, and unforgettable experiences. Let’s take a look at how to have a great boat holiday in Croatia. In this guide I will share with you Croatia: 5 Best Places for Your Holiday that are perfect for exploring by boat.
💡 You can easily book a vessel online through charter companies. Boat rental in Croatia is really not a problem nowadays. Choose the type of vessel, its size, the number of cabins, and, of course, the date you want to go on holiday. If you don’t have the necessary skipper’s license, you can also rent a boat with a captain.
You’ll travel from the Czech Republic to the Croatian port by car, where your boat will be waiting for you. And the adventure can begin. In this article, we’ll show you five areas with islands that are typically inaccessible without a boat. You definitely have to see them 😊
Map of Islands to Visit
Susak Island
You must visit this cozy sandy island if you’re going on a boat trip with children. It is located on the border of the Kvarner Bay, which is known for its azure clear water and other beautiful islands. The beaches are clean, sandy, and gently sloping, which is not so common in Croatia. Children can play to their heart’s content in the sand here.
The picturesque town on the island is completely car-free, full of old houses and winding streets. You’ll also find a few very good establishments with local specialties here. The island is also great for lovers of good wine. You can stroll through the hills, admire vineyards, dense bamboo groves, visit a cemetery or a lighthouse. You won’t want to leave this green splendor.
Kornati
You’ve certainly heard of the archipelago consisting of 147 islets, at least by word of mouth. What’s amazing about Kornati, however, is that you can spend your entire holiday here and discover something different every day. For example, head to the area between Dugi Otok and Otok Kornati islands, where Telaščica Nature Park and Kornati National Park meet.
Beautiful views, picturesque nooks and islets await you here, as well as historical monuments, such as the Sestrice lighthouse admired by tourists. However, when sailing through Kornati National Park, find out about entrance fees. If you anchor here, you need a valid ticket, which is best purchased online.
Pakleni Islands (Pakleni)
Are you planning a boat trip closer to Split? You certainly won’t miss large islands like Brač or the tourist-loved Hvar. And it’s definitely from Hvar that you should head to the Pakleni Islands. They consist of 16 islets, with Jerolim being the most visited, a nudist paradise. You can go here for a day trip, or anchor overnight in the marina in Palmižana Bay.
You’ll find dense pine growth here, after whose resin the archipelago is named. Mediterranean herbs like rosemary, sage, and laurel also add to the beauty of the islets. However, life here is very difficult, which is why there is almost no settlement here nowadays. During the summer months, many bars and restaurants are open here. Historical monuments from the Roman settlement era are also present.
Korčula
From Hvar, you can easily get to Korčula Island. This island will appeal to you if you love old towns full of life. It is home to the city of Korčula, which is the birthplace of the important traveler Marco Polo. However, the city doesn’t just thrive on its famous native. You can stroll through winding streets, admire old houses, buy creations from local artists, and enjoy good food.
Korčula Island also offers less bustling places. For example, the spa resort Vela Luka or the fishing village Lambarda, where you can admire old noble residences.
Lastovo
Lastovo Island lies about 14 km from Korčula. It is home to a town of the same name and various smaller settlements. Lastovo and the smaller islets around it have been declared a nature park since 2006. So, there’s no shortage of beautiful natural views here, and you’ll also find a number of historical monuments and enjoy good food and drink.

Tips and Tricks for Your Vacation
Don’t Overpay for Flights
Search for flights on Kayak. It’s our favorite search engine because it scans the websites of all airlines and always finds the cheapest connection.
Book Your Accommodation Smartly
The best experiences we’ve had when looking for accommodation (from Alaska to Morocco) are with Booking.com, where hotels, apartments, and entire houses are usually the cheapest and most widely available.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Good travel insurance will protect you against illness, accidents, theft, or flight cancellations. We’ve had a few hospital visits abroad, so we know how important it is to have proper insurance arranged.
Where we insure ourselves: SafetyWing (best for everyone) and TrueTraveller (for extra-long trips).
Why don’t we recommend any Czech insurance company? Because they have too many restrictions. They set limits on the number of days abroad, travel insurance via a credit card often requires you to pay medical expenses only with that card, and they frequently limit the number of returns to the Czech Republic.
