Don’t miss a boat or yacht trip to the Pirates’ Channel, a look round Fort San Felipe with its museum of pirate history, and a swim in Cenote Azul in the village of Xul-Ha, or the other Cenote Azul by the lagoon, which drops over 90 metres deep. If you’ve got time, add the Kan K’in zip-line park, the stromatolites at Cocalitos and Los R\u00e1pidos, and the Mayan ruins at Kohunlich, an hour away and inhabited since 200 BC. The best time to visit is November to May, when the water is at its clearest. For food, we’d recommend the pizzeria Pues Si, the vegan bistro Mango Y Chile with its lagoon views, and La Pi\u00f1a, which serves huge portions at low prices.<\/div>\n\n\n\nJust two hours’ drive from Tulum lies the quiet town of Bacalar <\/b>on the shores of a crystal clear freshwater lagoon. This place is ideal for those who are fed up with touristy places like Tulum and Playa del Carmen and want to relax a bit outside the glitzy hotel zones. Bacalar belongs to the group of Pueblos M\u00e1gicos (or magical cities), which the Mexican government has designated as culturally important places in Mexico.
