Which photo banks are the most profitable? And why do I devote myself to travel photography?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n\n<p>As I have already hinted, we will talk about microphotobanks. I have to admit that I was always skeptical about them, even when I uploaded my first photos to <strong><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Shutterstock\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/shutterstock\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Shutterstock<\/a><\/strong> in December 2016. class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n<p>This is a <strong>photo bank where <\/strong>prices per photo start at half a dollar, some images are even free to download. The microphotobank is used by commercial entities, but also by private users for websites, billboards, posters, advertising banners, etc.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1107\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/fotobanky-nabidka.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55932\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source : https:\/\/stock.adobe.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_can_you_realistically_earn\"><\/span>How much can you realistically earn?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll be honest, you don&#8217;t have to earn anything, but you can earn up to ten grand<strong>.<\/strong> From 2018 to the beginning of 2023, I&#8217; <strong>ve made over $2000 on photo banks and I&#8217;ve only uploaded 250-350 photos<\/strong> (some photo banks have more and some have less). I&#8217;m currently getting a few hundred dollars a year. The last 3 years I&#8217;ve taken out $300-600 a year, it always depends on whether I contribute regularly.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2022, photographers on photo banks earned an average of $0.02 per image per month. These vary slightly from photo bank to photo bank, for example <strong><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Shutterstock\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/shutterstock\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Shutterstock<\/a><\/strong> has a minimum size of 4MP (4 megapixels).<\/p>\n\n<p>Some stock photo sites must first approve your profile<strong>(<a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Shutterstock\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/shutterstock\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Shutterstock<\/a><\/strong>) and others<strong>(<a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Adobe Stock\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/adobe-stock\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Adobe Stock<\/a><\/strong>) allow you to start uploading your photos immediately. I would definitely start with one or two at first. Income from photo banks is not classified as casual\/other income because the supply in your portfolio is ongoing and you are repeatedly accepting money and licensing your photos, vectors or videos. Detailed instructions can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fotobanky.cz\/navod-danove-priznani-fotobanky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">here<\/a>, but there is nothing to worry about.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shutterstock\"><\/span>Shutterstock<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/shutterstock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/logo-shutterstock.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55938\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Shutterstock\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/shutterstock\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Shutterstock<\/a> is probably the most popular microphotobank in the world and Czech photographers dedicated to photobanks rank it as the most profitable.  <strong>It makes me the most money too.  <\/strong>It is very intuitive, but your profile must be approved first when you upload your first 10 images. If you go for it, pick your best images, don&#8217;t try to be too creative, go for the safe bet.<\/p>\n\n<p>I was reaching for my kitschy photos of Canadian lakes (some of my best sellers). I also recommend avoiding pictures with people in them, because you need a Model Release for those. If we look at it through statistics, you can earn $100 with a portfolio of 200 or more quality photos. It is also important to post photos consistently and keep your account active.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/peyto-lake.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55945\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Even the most typical kitsch is sold<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alamy_stock_photos\"><\/span>Alamy stock photos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alamy.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\n  <strong>Alamy<\/strong>\n<\/a> is a British photo agency that I only discovered in 2020. This is a company that has been on the market since the 90s. years and it is a very popular site for selling photos mainly <strong>because of the 50% commission, at the same time it is also a very competitive photo bank.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>In order to start selling on Alamy, you have to pass the test again. This means you upload a series of your best quality photos to Alamy and <strong>wait 2-3 days to see if they approve you. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bigstock\"><\/span>Bigstock<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>I s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstockphoto.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\n  <strong>Bigstock<\/strong>\n<\/a> I didn&#8217;t start until 2020. This is again a very widespread photo bank, probably one of the largest on the market, founded in 2004.  <strong>You don&#8217;t have to go through a quality test and you can start uploading photos straight away.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Colourbox\"><\/span>Colourbox<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Another photobank I joined this year is the Danish microsite <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colourbox.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colourbox<\/a>, where<\/strong> <strong>we get 20% of the sales. <\/strong>That&#8217;s not as much as Alamy, but on the other hand there is much less competition.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DepositPhotos\"><\/span>DepositPhotos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/depositphotos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"117\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/depositphotos-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55962\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>You may be familiar with <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"DepositPhotos\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/depositphotos\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">DepositPhotos<\/a> if you buy photos for marketing purposes. They have quite interesting promotions and low prices. While this is not good for those of us who want to make money selling photos, there is quite a bit of competition on <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"DepositPhotos\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/depositphotos\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">depositphotos<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_photo_sites_where_to_sell_photos_vectors_and_videos\"><\/span>More photo sites where to sell photos, vectors and videos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoonar.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"  (opens in a new tab)\">Zoonar<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.500px.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"  (opens in a new tab)\">500px<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canstockphoto.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"  (opens in a new tab)\">CanStockPhoto<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"  (opens in a new tab)\">GettyImages<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_tips_for_successful_photo_sales\"><\/span>3 tips for successful photo sales<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Generic, not artistic, but <strong>technically mastered photographs<\/strong> sell best in photo banks <strong>.<\/strong> What is important is the quality of the photo, the right keywords and caption, and the desirability of the subject.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_The_right_technique_and_tools_%E2%80%93_how_to_increase_sales\"><\/span>1) The right technique and tools &#8211; how to increase sales<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>The basics are a good camera<strong>(Read <a aria-label=\"jak si vybrat fotoapar&#xE1;t a objektivy (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/jak-vybrat-fotoaparat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how to choose a camera and lenses<\/a><\/strong>), and at least a basic knowledge of photo editing. You should be able to sharpen the photo, adjust the contrast and pull out the colors. A very small adjustment can increase your sales several times over. <strong>Personally, learning <a aria-label=\"s Lightroomem (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/uprava-fotek-presety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lightroom<\/a> has helped me the most. <\/strong> For example, they have a great tutorial on Lightroom on <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Kurzeo\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/kurzeo\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Kurzeo<\/a>, I wrote a detailed review<strong>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/kurzeo-recenze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> here<\/a>\n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Lightroom is a professional photo editing program that can edit hundreds of photos at once, as long as they were taken in the same lighting conditions. Although there are many alternative programs, the vast majority of photographers end up using Lightroom.  <\/p>\n\n<p>If you want to improve your photography, Skillshare offers a number of online courses (unfortunately only in English).  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Be_traceable_how_to_choose_keywords_and_descriptions\"><\/span>2) Be traceable: how to choose keywords and descriptions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>To make people find your photos, you need to choose a clever caption and photo caption.  <strong>I recommend you try searching for photos with the same theme on <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Shutterstock\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/shutterstock\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Shutterstock<\/a> (or another photo agency) and look at the captions of the photos that come up first.<\/strong>  Be inspired by them, but never copy them completely!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1166\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/klicova-slova-pro-fotobanky-2048x1166.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55955\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Keyword selection is even more important.  <\/strong>It should define everything that is in your photo and what the photo could illustrate. Fortunately, there is a free tool that can help you track down keywords. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keyword.io\/tool\/stock-photo-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\n  <strong>Do Keyword.io<\/strong>\n<\/a> just enter one keyword that best describes your photo and the program will search for 50 more for you.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Choosing_the_topics_that_sell_the_most\"><\/span>3) Choosing the topics that sell the most<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>Although I recommend starting out selling photos you would take anyway &#8211; such as travel photos &#8211; there are subjects that sell much more than travel photos.  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>People at work (be careful, you need to have a signed model release)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Babies (need parental consent)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Food and coffee<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interiors<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technology<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Religion<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sports (need model release)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seasons<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Animals (dogs, cats)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_save_yourself_work_%E2%80%93_uploading_photos_in_bulk_to_photobanks\"><\/span>How to save yourself work &#8211; uploading photos in bulk to photobanks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>I have a confession to make, after I wrote the first version of this article in 2017, I didn&#8217;t last long at the photo banks.  <strong>Uploading was tedious for me, and even though I could see my earnings growing, I couldn&#8217;t bring myself to upload photos regularly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>I often felt ashamed because I saw that if I devoted a few hours a week to it, I could have a long-term passive income. I was only getting a few hundred dollars a few months that way.<\/p>\n\n<p>But at the end of 2019, I discovered a tool that allows you to <strong>upload photos to all photo banks at once!<\/strong> Just register on the <a href=\"https:\/\/stocksubmitter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">StockSubmitter<\/a> platform and for Macbook users <a href=\"https:\/\/microstock.plus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Microstock.Plus<\/a>. You get 200 GB for free at the beginning, and then you have to pay.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_most_profitable_photo_banks\"><\/span>What are the most profitable photo banks?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>I make most of my money on <strong><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Shutterstock\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/shutterstock\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Shutterstock<\/a><\/strong>, as do most people who sell on photo banks. All in all, I have already <strong>earned tens of thousands of crowns<\/strong> there <strong>.<\/strong> Although you read everywhere that you shouldn&#8217;t post &#8220;typical shots&#8221; but come up with original views, the biggest and most typical travel kitsch sells to me. Then also the fact that I hit a hole in the market in the form of photos from places where not many people go, but are currently trying to attract more tourists.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_4847-1024x683-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55946\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of my more popular photos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_I_only_have_to_sell_travel_photos\"><\/span>Do I only have to sell travel photos?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>No, as I wrote, you can go into any topic, from food to technology. But if you don&#8217;t know for sure that there really is a hole in the market, I wouldn&#8217;t invest too much time in it.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Although I&#8217;m not as skeptical of microphotobanks anymore, I still don&#8217;t think being a full-time photographer for microphotobanks is something you should go headfirst into.<\/strong>  Start by gradually selling the photos you already take when you travel.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_3631.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55947\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<p>But if you have another idea for photos that might sell, enter it into photo banks, do a trend reserche and try it out. Maybe you&#8217;ll be the exception that proves the rule.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ftoc-heading-17\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advantages_and_disadvantages_of_selling_photos_on_photo_banks\"><\/span>Advantages and disadvantages of selling photos on photo banks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>The main advantages of selling on photo banks<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can monetize the photos you have on your external drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You&#8217;ll get better at taking pictures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A great source of passive income<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flexible earnings from anywhere &#8211; you can work from your computer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No additional cost if you are already taking photos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can quit at any time, but you will keep selling \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The main disadvantages of selling on photo banks include<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have to invest a large amount of time in recording<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expect your first worthwhile earnings after months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First payout after months of work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_other_ways_to_make_money_from_photos\"><\/span>What are other ways to make money from photos?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Photo banks are not the only way to make money from the fact that you like to take photos or have a good collection of travel or food photos. \ud83d\ude42  <\/p>\n\n<p>You can sell your photos to travel agencies, for example, or you can make other products from your photos. For example, as posters, calendars or T-shirts, if you have high quality photographs, you can try selling them as paintings.
