When you think of sunny Southern California, most of us picture endless beaches and constant warmth. In San Diego, however, you’re choosing a microclimate rather than just a neighborhood<\/strong>, and typical guidebooks don’t write much about this. If you visit in late spring, you might be surprised by a phenomenon locals call May Gray and June Gloom<\/strong>. This means that while thick morning fog blankets the coast throughout the entire morning, just a few kilometers inland the sun is already blazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staying right on the beach sounds like perfect romance, but in May and June you’ll wake up to gray mornings by the ocean<\/strong>. In contrast, hotels in the city center or near the famous Balboa Park will guarantee you much more sunshine, and you can easily head to the water whenever you like. It’s also good to know that the Pacific water stays cold year-round<\/strong> and even in August surfers routinely wear wetsuits. So if you’re looking forward to carefree morning swims, it makes a lot of sense in San Diego to pay extra for a hotel with its own heated pool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transportation and parking also play an important role when choosing your location. As of January 5, 2026, San Diego Zoo charges $16 parking<\/strong> per vehicle per day between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM. The city council voted to eliminate this fee as of January 1, 2027, but until then your car trips could get more expensive. From downtown, you can reach the zoo and Balboa Park on Rapid 215 and Route 7 in less than 15 minutes<\/strong>, with a one-way ticket costing about $2.50. A downtown hotel near a Trolley stop is often more practical than a remote resort with a large parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
