Yet the local streets hide colonial churches built directly on top of precise Inca walls. A stop for two to three days in Cusco is well worth it.

Buying entry to Machu Picchu on the spot in the morning is now more of a lottery, as tickets have a new system with specific time slots and ten different routes. Foreigners pay 152 Peruvian soles (S/ 152, around €40), and for routes with mountain climbs agencies quote S/ 200 (around €50). From May 2026, there’s an additional fee to the SERNANP protected areas authority of S/ 11 (€3). Since September 22, 2026, you cannot hold a ticket without paying, and you must pay within fifteen minutes. The Minister of Culture has announced that reservations are no longer refundable. In the town of Aguas Calientes below the mountain, you can buy tickets up to three days in advance at most. However, conditions keep changing. Check the current sales status on the official website tuboleto.cultura.pe.

Before you start packing your bags, remember the altitude of 3,400 meters, where acclimatization is the key to success. The ideal approach: fly from Lima to Cusco airport and immediately head down to the lower-lying Sacred Valley. Don’t be confused by reports about a new airport near Chinchero village. According to estimates, it will open no earlier than late 2027 or early 2028. For now, landings are still at the old airport right in Cusco. To explore the region, you’ll need the combined ticket Boleto Turístico for S/ 130 (€35). It’s valid for ten days and can only be purchased on-site, either in Cusco or at monument entrances. It’s not sold online. It does not cover Machu Picchu, the cathedral, Qorikancha temple, or the Maras salt mines.

<figure The dry season lasts from May to September and brings sunny days with average highs around 21 °C, while nights are cold. April, May, September, and October are usually a good compromise. There’s little rain and fewer people in the city than in June through August, though Machu Picchu still has high season in September and October.

The rainy season runs from November to March and can complicate travel plans. In January it rains an average of almost twenty days per month. The popular Inca Trail is closed for the entire month of February for regular maintenance, and mountain weather is unpredictable. Even in the dry season there can be exceptionally wet weather. According to reports from local agencies, the Inca Trail was closed due to El Niño-related rains from August 18 to September 5, 2026. If you go in June or July, prepare for cold nights. Average minimum temperatures drop to 1-2 °C and local houses often don’t have heating. The most famous event is the Inti Raymi sun festival, held annually on June 24.

💡 Tip: At high altitude, the sun burns much more intensely than it seems. Pack sunscreen even for cold days.

There are no direct flights from Europe to Cusco, and international routes from Cusco only go to other South American countries. The journey usually goes through Lima. The domestic flight takes about an hour and a half and is operated by airlines LATAM, SKY, or JetSMART. From the airport you can reach the city center in ten to twenty minutes. A taxi from the official stand costs roughly 35 to 60 soles (€9-16). Uber also operates in Cusco. Regular taxis don’t have meters, so agree on the price beforehand. It’s better not to hail taxis from the street, which is also recommended by the UK Foreign Office (FCDO).

The official currency is the Peruvian sol, and one sol costs roughly 6.29 CZK. Larger hotels and agencies commonly accept US dollars. However, you’ll need small amounts of soles in cash for fees to communities at natural attractions. While ATMs can be found on every corner, always withdraw money inside bank branches to avoid the risk of card skimming. In restaurants, a tip of ten percent is customary unless the bill includes a service charge. Sockets are usually 220 V and 60 Hz. European two-pin plugs often fit, otherwise you’ll need an adapter. Tap water is not potable.

Travelers from the Czech Republic don’t need a visa for regular stays. You’ll typically receive 90 days, with a maximum possible stay of 183 days that cannot be extended. For each day over the allowed period, there’s a fine of S/ 4.50 (€1). The TAM (Tarjeta Andina de Migración) immigration form has been electronic only since 2023 and you fill it out for free. Hotels will ask for it because as a foreigner staying up to sixty days, you don’t pay the eighteen percent accommodation tax with it. You’ll need your passport when buying tickets to Machu Picchu, the Boleto Turístico combined ticket, and train tickets. According to PeruRail, foreigners must show their passport exclusively at the Machu Picchu entrance.

Altitude Sickness and Safety

Staying at Andean altitudes brings specific health challenges that require attention. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that up to half of travelers get sick after a rapid flight to Cusco. Cusco sits at 3,400 meters above sea level. The CDC therefore recommends sleeping the first night as low as possible, ideally no higher than around 2,750 meters. The Sacred Valley (about 2,800 to 2,950 m) approaches this threshold, while Machu Picchu (2,430 m) lies below it. It makes sense to spend the first one to two nights lower down so your body can adjust.

Move slowly for the first few days, drink plenty of bottled water, and skip alcohol for the first forty-eight hours. Consult your doctor before the trip about using preventive medications such as acetazolamide. The ubiquitous coca tea is part of local customs and makes many people feel better, but it’s not a cure for altitude sickness. You can buy coca leaves at any local market, but never bring them home. The coca leaf is an internationally controlled substance and importing it into the EU is prohibited. Coca can also give a positive drug test. If you experience shortness of breath at rest or have an unsteady gait, you must descend lower and seek medical attention.

💡 Tip: According to the CDC, physical fitness does not reduce the risk of altitude sickness, so even trained athletes should follow gradual acclimatization.

The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued any current warnings for Peru. The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) warns of pickpockets in tourist areas and cautions against fake taxi drivers or fraudulent money changers. Money changers sometimes try to pass off old invalid inti banknotes (currency valid until 1991) instead of current soles to tourists. Your journey may occasionally be complicated by local protests and road or railway blockades. For safety reasons, don’t try to drive or walk around them and wait until the situation calms down.

The FCDO states that for women traveling alone in the Cusco area, it has recorded cases of unethical practices by some agencies. Caution is also worthwhile when choosing evening drinks. There have been past cases of methanol poisoning in Peru, so drink traditional pisco only in verified bars. The FCDO also warns against unregulated ayahuasca plant rituals, which can have serious health consequences.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days for Cusco and Machu Picchu?

Plan for four to six days: two to three days for the city, one for the Sacred Valley, and one to two for Machu Picchu.
