This city simply doesn’t give you a choice—you either love it or it catches you completely off guard. Futuristic skyscrapers tower directly opposite beautiful colonial buildings, and the scent from traditional Chinese eateries hidden in narrow alleys mingles with it all. Be prepared for the fact that this city never sleeps and its pace is a bit dizzying at first, but once you tune into the local wavelength, Shanghai will win you over.

Before you head here, though, you need to arm yourself with a bit of patience and work through some fairly specific red tape. While some European travelers enjoy visa-free entry, many visitors still need a visa to enter China, though there’s also a special visa-free transit option available under certain conditions. Once you’ve sorted out all the paperwork and installed the right payment apps on your phone, a completely different world opens up. You’ll discover that the local metro runs precisely to the minute and that you actually don’t need a wallet with cash at all.

I’ve compiled 22 tips for you on what not to miss in Shanghai, from views high in the clouds to hidden temples that tourists rarely visit. We’ll explore the best panoramic views high in the sky, discover hidden historic temples, examine fascinating modern museums, and I’ll show you how to avoid the worst crowds. We won’t forget practical tips about payments, transportation, and I’ll show you how to survive here without problems as a vegetarian.

<figure I’ve prepared a quick summary of the most important things you should know before traveling to this Asian metropolis.

Visa lottery: Many travelers need a type L tourist visa to enter China, though there’s also a 240-hour visa-free transit option (if you have a ticket to a third country). Some European nationals can travel visa-free until the end of 2026.

Mobile payments only: Cash and regular payment cards are useless in small establishments. You absolutely need to download Alipay or WeChat Pay and link your European card to them.

Internet censorship: Google, Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp don’t work in China. You must install a reliable VPN app before you fly from home.

Best views: The iconic Bund waterfront is best enjoyed an hour after sunset, while you can see the city from above from the 118th floor of Shanghai Tower.

Dirt-cheap transport: Shanghai has the world’s longest metro network, with an all-day ticket costing just 18 CNY (about €2.50). From the airport, you can also ride the maglev magnetic train at speeds up to 430 km/h.

Trips to the surrounding area: Besides the historic gardens in the city of Suzhou, don’t miss LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort, which opened in summer 2025 as the world’s largest.

When to Visit Shanghai

If you want to experience the most pleasant weather and avoid extremes, plan your trip ideally for October or November. Temperatures during this autumn period range between a very comfortable 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, the sky is usually clear, and you’ll avoid the exhausting humidity that plagues the city for the rest of the year. Another excellent choice is the spring months of April and May, when the whole city turns beautifully green, trees blossom in the parks, and temperatures are absolutely ideal for all-day sightseeing.

On the other hand, I’d recommend giving summer a wide berth. During July and August, temperatures regularly climb to 35 degrees, and combined with extreme air humidity, the city becomes a scorching concrete sauna. Winter tends to be quite gray and unfriendly. Although temperatures only drop to 3 to 8 degrees above zero, because of the omnipresent high humidity, the cold unpleasantly gets under your skin, so you’d need really warm clothing and constant stops for hot tea.

Be very careful about Chinese national holidays, which can turn your vacation into a logistical nightmare full of endless queues. Chinese New Year (a moveable holiday in January or February) means hundreds of millions of people travel to visit their families, trains are hopelessly sold out, and many smaller businesses are completely closed for several days. Likewise, avoid at all costs the so-called Golden Week at the beginning of October, when all of China has time off and Shanghai’s monuments are bursting at the seams under the massive influx of domestic tourists.

Practical Information Before Traveling to Shanghai

The foundation of traveling to Shanghai is getting oriented with the visa policy, because it’s been changing quite dynamically in recent years. Slovaks, Poles, and Germans have visa-free entry until December 31, 2026 for up to 30 days, but unfortunately many other nationalities don’t appear on this list. If you’re not from one of these countries, you’ll need to arrange a classic tourist visa (type L) at a visa center in advance. An alternative is the 240-hour visa-free transit, which has been valid in Shanghai since the end of 2024, but you must have a confirmed ticket to a third country and comply with designated border crossings.

The second major difference is the payment method, because Shanghai today is essentially an almost cashless city. You can only pay with a European payment card in luxury hotels, and they’ll often refuse to take cash even at a refreshment stand. The solution is the Alipay or WeChat Pay app, into which you load your Visa or Mastercard and verify your identity with your passport. Transactions up to 200 CNY are free, and above this amount the apps charge 3% for cross-border payments.

You also need to keep in mind that the Great Firewall of China blocks most of the Western internet. To be able to use Google Maps, social networks, or message your family via WhatsApp, you must install a reliable VPN before your flight—you won’t be able to download it in China. A great alternative to blocked maps is downloading the Amap or Baidu Maps app, and for ordering cheap taxis I recommend the DiDi app. As for local food, definitely don’t drink tap water and use bottled water even for brushing your teeth. If you’re vegetarian, avoid the famous xiaolongbao dumplings (they’re filled with pork and broth) and head instead to Buddhist restaurants near temples, or try the Vegetarian Lifestyle restaurant in Jing’an, where they have an excellent menu with pictures that’s easy to understand.

Where to Stay in Shanghai

Choosing the right location is absolutely crucial in such a sprawling city, otherwise you’ll spend unnecessary hours each day just commuting underground. The best strategic location is around People’s Square or the beginning of Nanjing Road, from where you can walk to the historic waterfront and there’s an intersection of several main metro lines. If you’re looking for a quieter atmosphere with a touch of old Europe, look for accommodation in the Former French Concession, where you’ll stroll under plane trees, admire colonial villas, and sip coffee in small independent cafés.

Accommodation in Shanghai can be quite expensive, but if you book far enough in advance, real gems can be found for reasonable prices. Always make sure your chosen hotel is very close to a metro station, ideally within a five-minute walk, because after a full day of exploring the city, you’ll appreciate every saved step. The Bund Waterfront (Waitan)

The Bund waterfront is probably the most iconic place in all of Shanghai, and your first steps should lead you right here. This mile-long promenade along the Huangpu River is lined with dozens of historic colonial-style buildings that wealthy Western banks and trading companies erected here in the 1920s and 1930s. The atmosphere of the old world breathes from every stone, and the meticulous architecture here is more reminiscent of London or Paris than a typical Chinese metropolis.

The real visual shock comes the moment you look across the river to the opposite bank into the modern Pudong district. The contrast between the historic facades and futuristic skyscrapers is breathtaking and perfectly symbolizes China’s incredible economic development. On the promenade you’ll find plenty of benches and elevated viewing spots from where you can capture the best photographs of the famous Shanghai skyline that you know from travel documentaries.

💡 Tip: The best time to visit is about an hour after sunset. Shanghai Tower and the View from the 118th Floor

If you love heights and modern architecture, a visit to Shanghai Tower is an absolute must for you. At an impressive height of 632 meters, it’s the second tallest building in the entire world, and its elegant, spiraling twisted design dominates the entire city skyline. The journey up alone is an incredible experience, as you’re whisked up by one of the fastest elevators on the planet, which reaches speeds of over 70 kilometers per hour and gets you to your destination in less than a minute.

The main attraction is the expansive public observation deck located on the incredible 118th floor. The view from this height of the city below you is so overwhelming that the surrounding glass skyscrapers suddenly look like tiny Lego toys. On a clear day you can easily see for dozens of kilometers and watch the endless stream of cargo and cruise ships on the winding Huangpu River undisturbed.

Tickets can be purchased on-site in the lobby or conveniently in advance online. Basic admission for an adult is 180 CNY (approximately €23), students up to 23 years old get discounted admission for 125 CNY, and children by height (101 to 140 cm) pay 95 CNY. I recommend planning your visit for late afternoon so you can catch daylight, a romantic sunset, and the gradually illuminating night city from the observation deck.

Photo: chrisiogwaan / Google Maps

3. The opening primarily serves to effectively reduce wind pressure on the entire massive structure of the building.

The iconic Sky Walk observation deck itself is located just above this opening on the even 100th floor at a height of 474 meters. The entire long corridor is glazed and partially has a glass floor as well, so you sometimes feel as if you’re floating directly above the awakening city. The views of the neighboring Jin Mao Tower and the winding Huangpu River are amazing from here, and the entire space feels much more airy than the slightly higher observation deck at Shanghai Tower.

If you love modern architecture, a visit to this skyscraper should definitely not be missing from your itinerary. Today it’s a masterpiece of traditional garden architecture full of quiet ponds, wooden pavilions, artificial rock formations, and beautifully shaped old trees.

During your walk you’ll definitely come across the characteristic zigzag bridges, which are designed this way quite deliberately, because evil spirits according to Chinese mythology cannot walk around corners. Large colorful koi carp swim in the ponds, and the walls separating individual quiet courtyards are decorated with impressive dragon spines. It’s a place made for moments of contemplation, although keep in mind that on weekends it can get really crowded.

Admission varies slightly by season but usually hovers around a very reasonable 40 CNY (approximately €5). You’ll experience the most beautiful atmosphere here early in the morning, before large tour groups equipped with megaphones and flags arrive. Jade Buddha Temple

Most landmarks in Shanghai have roots deep in ancient history. Jade Buddha Temple, however, is relatively young but all the more impressive. Its fascinating story begins in 1882, when a Buddhist monk brought two rare Buddha statues from Burma, hand-carved from solid pieces of brilliant white jadeite. It was precisely to protect these exceptionally valuable statues that this entire magnificent temple complex was subsequently built.

The greatest attention is drawn to the seated Buddha statue, which stands nearly two meters tall and is adorned with dozens of precious gems. Photography of the statue itself is strictly forbidden, which only intensifies the sacred and serene atmosphere of the place, carefully guarded by local monks. The second, smaller statue depicts Buddha reclining at the moment of achieving nirvana and is no less fascinating with its incredible fine detail.

The temple still functions as an active monastery, so you’ll regularly encounter monks in yellow robes quietly chanting sutras or tending to the temple courtyards. If you visit around noon, definitely don’t miss the local temple dining hall, which serves very cheap and authentic vegetarian meals based primarily on fresh tofu, rice noodles, and mushrooms.

Photo: Doug Ho / Google Maps

10. The sight of traditional curved roofs against a backdrop of ultra-modern architecture is simply unforgettable.

The temple’s history dates back to the third century, though it was moved to its current lucrative location during the Song dynasty, and during the Cultural Revolution it even served as an ordinary plastics factory. Today it’s completely and lavishly restored, with its roofs covered in real gold that glistens incredibly in the sun. The entrance fee here is somewhat higher (around 50 CNY), but the majestic silver Buddha statue inside the main hall is definitely worth it.

💡 Tip: Don’t plan your visit for daylight only. After dark, the entire temple is beautifully illuminated, and combined with the blinking neon signs of surrounding department stores, it creates a fantastic and slightly surreal atmosphere. Plus, it’s very easily accessible, as the metro station of the same name is located directly beneath it.

<figure data-wp-context="{"imageId":"6ad0a691a3dd1"}" Longhua Temple

Of all the temples in Shanghai, Longhua Temple is the oldest and most expansive, yet surprisingly still escapes the attention of most foreign tourists. Its history reaches back, according to ancient legends, to the year 242, and it still retains a high degree of authenticity. Unlike the overcrowded and polished Jing’an Temple, real tranquility reigns here and you’ll encounter mainly local worshippers.

The dominant feature of the entire sprawling complex is a forty-meter octagonal pagoda, clearly visible from a great distance. You can’t actually enter the pagoda itself to protect the fragile monument, but its exterior is beautiful and photogenic. In the various temple halls, you’ll find gigantic golden Buddha statues and hundreds of smaller detailed figurines of luohans (Buddhist saints).

For me personally, this is the highest-rated temple of the entire selection, partly thanks to the fantastic temple restaurant, which is a hidden gem. The local Buddhist dining hall cooks only purely vegetarian dishes, and their hearty noodle soups with mushrooms or vegetable dumplings for a few coins are renowned. If you want to experience the true spiritual face of Shanghai without crowds with cameras, head here.

Photo: Simon Nadeau / Google Maps

12. Shanghai Museum on People’s Square

If you want to immerse yourself in immensely rich Chinese history, there’s no better place than the classic Shanghai Museum located right on the expansive People’s Square. The museum building has a unique shape with a round roof and square base, which in traditional ancient Chinese philosophy symbolizes round heaven and square earth. Already from the outside, this massive building represents a work of art that immediately catches your eye.

Inside, amazing and carefully curated collections await you, mapping thousands of years of Chinese art. The most prized is the extensive exhibition of ancient bronzes, some of which are more than three thousand years old, as well as the fascinating collection of fine Chinese ceramics and luxury porcelain. You’ll also find beautiful examples of traditional calligraphy, paintings, and elaborate furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

A great advantage for all travelers is that admission to the permanent exhibitions is completely free. All you have to do is reserve your ticket in advance through the official app or WeChat, as daily capacity is limited for security reasons. However, prepare for thorough security checks at the entrance, and I recommend arriving first thing in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds of noisy school excursions.

Photo: Xi Nguyen / Google Maps

13. Shanghai Museum East Campus

While the old museum on the square has undeniable historical charm, the new Shanghai Museum East Campus building in the Pudong area, which fully opened to the public in 2024, is in a different league. With an incredible exhibition space of 46,000 square meters, this is one of the largest and most technologically advanced museums in all of Asia. According to reviews and traveler ratings, it offers the absolute best museum experience in the entire city.

The building’s architecture is strictly minimalist, and the spaces inside are so enormous that even large crowds naturally and beautifully disperse throughout them. The exhibits utilize cutting-edge technology, interactive touchscreens, and stunning theatrical lighting that literally brings ancient artifacts to life before your eyes. Besides traditional art, you’ll find extensive sections dedicated to China’s ethnic minorities and their beautiful traditional costumes.

For a visit to this colossal institution, set aside at least half a day, because walking through all the floors and absorbing so much information really takes time. The biggest draw is undoubtedly the complete massive dinosaur skeletons in the central hall, but you’ll also find thousands of meticulously prepared taxidermy animals from all corners of the planet. The exhibits trace the evolution of life on Earth from the Paleozoic era to the present day, and everything is presented in a very comprehensible and visually attractive format with plenty of English labels.

Admission is only 30 CNY (about €5), which is an excellent price for such an extensive and modern institution. The museum is very interactive, so you can touch many things, play animations, or listen to the real sounds of a rainforest. As the name itself suggests, this prestigious institution is housed in the enormous building of a former coal power plant, whose tall chimney with a massive illuminated thermometer serves as an excellent landmark. The space, with its rawness and industrial spirit, strongly resembles the famous Tate Modern gallery in London.

Today it’s the largest state contemporary art gallery in China and hosts the most important international and domestic exhibitions. The expansive concrete halls provide the perfect space for monumental installations that simply wouldn’t fit in regular city center galleries. Besides the art itself, definitely don’t miss the café on the top floor, which offers beautiful industrial views of the river and the Pudong district, without the annoying crowds you’re guaranteed to experience on the main Bund waterfront.

Photo: 一粒粥 / Google Maps

16. The China Art Museum is housed in an absolutely unmissable massive red building in the shape of an inverted pyramid, which originally served as the main Chinese national pavilion during the famous 2010 EXPO world exhibition. Just for this monumental architecture alone, which cleverly draws from traditional Chinese dougong bracket roofs, the place is worth a visit.

Inside, the museum focuses primarily on modern Chinese art from the late 19th century to the present. The collections contain thousands of paintings, sculptures, and elaborate calligraphy works, showing how Chinese art evolved complexly under the influence of both Western and traditional Asian styles. Walking through the enormous halls of this red pyramid is an experience in itself—the space is truly colossal.

Entry to the main majestic building and permanent exhibitions is once again free for all visitors. The building is located in the modern Pudong area and is best accessed by metro to the China Art Museum station of the same name. Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum

One of the most powerful, most emotional, and simultaneously least known museums in all of Shanghai lies in the unassuming Hongkou district. During World War II, when most of the world uncompromisingly closed its borders, Shanghai provided refuge to approximately 20,000 Jews fleeing from Nazism from Europe. This excellent museum is built around the former Ohel Moshe synagogue and tells their incredible stories in detail.

The exhibition guides you chronologically through the history of the Shanghai ghetto and shows you how European refugees survived and lived side by side with local residents during incredibly difficult wartime conditions. You’ll see personal belongings, passports with false visas, period photographs, and moving video testimonies from survivors. The entire place has an incredibly reverent and respectful atmosphere that will make you reflect deeply.

Admission costs 50 CNY, and a great advantage is that all exhibits are perfectly presented in English. In the peaceful courtyard of the museum, there’s also a memorial wall with the names of thousands of people who found their salvation here. It’s a piece of moving history that isn’t talked about much in Europe, and a visit to this place will certainly leave a profound impression on you.

Photo: St Maro / Google Maps

18. In many other parts of the city, these houses were demolished en masse, but here they managed to be saved and transformed into a popular arts enclave.

Today these old brick houses overflow with small galleries, local designer boutiques, charming cafés, and souvenir shops. The air is filled with the aroma of coffee, fresh tea, and tempting street food, and overhead you’ll still occasionally see laundry fluttering from the upper floors where longtime residents who never moved out still live.

It’s true that in recent years the place has become very popular and can get quite crowded and touristy during high season. It represents the modern, airy, and artistically focused future of the city. This extensive area along the Huangpu River underwent massive revitalization from a former industrial zone full of run-down warehouses and port cranes into an amazing recreational and cultural quarter that has quickly become a favorite spot for young Shanghai residents.

You’ll find several top-tier private museums and galleries here, of which the most famous is the Long Museum housed in a minimalist concrete building and the Yuz Museum located in a former giant aircraft hangar. But even if you’re not particularly fans of modern art, you’ll love the area thanks to its fantastic riverside promenade with dedicated bike lanes and perfect running trails.

Come here on a weekend afternoon and you’ll see local residents walking dogs, skateboarding, picnicking on the grass, and enjoying their free time. Sunsets over the river are much more peaceful than in the city center and the overall atmosphere resembles more the relaxed waterfront somewhere in Europe or Australia.

Where to Eat in Shanghai

Finding good food in Shanghai really isn’t a problem, you just won’t know what to taste first. The city is famous for its steamed dumplings filled with meat and hot broth, but you’ll also find great options for vegetarians or lovers of Western cuisine.

If you’re looking for something meat-free with an easy-to-understand menu, try Vegetarian Lifestyle in the Jing’an district. Hidden gems are the Buddhist canteens right at the temples. For example, at Longhua Temple or Jade Buddha Temple, monks will serve you excellent and very affordable vegetarian dishes based on fresh tofu and rice noodles. And when you feel like an evening drink with an incredible view, take the elevator to the Cloud 9 bar on the 87th floor of Jin Mao Tower. Coffee and drinks are more expensive, but you’ll save on the regular observation deck ticket and enjoy the view from the window in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Day Trips from Shanghai

When you’ve had enough of skyscrapers and metro, the area around Shanghai offers fantastic options for day trips and multi-day excursions. China’s rail network is incredibly fast and comfortable, so you can reach neighboring provinces in just a few dozen minutes.

Suzhou (25 minutes by high-speed train): This city is nicknamed the Venice of China and is famous for its historic classical gardens that are UNESCO World Heritage listed.
