If you’re heading to the Vietnamese capital and just starting to sort out where to stay in Hanoi, Vietnam<\/strong>, there’s one absolutely crucial thing I have to flag right at the start. In Hanoi you don’t pay for stars \u2014 you pay for silence and for a window.<\/strong> The city is full of fascinating contrasts, an endless stream of motorbikes and unbelievably cheap accommodation, but that comes with a specific catch that catches a lot of travelers off guard. Traditional Hanoian houses are extremely narrow and deep, which in practice means that a large chunk of hotel rooms in the Old Quarter simply have no window to the outside<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’ll pay a fraction of what you’d spend in Europe here, and you’ll get service at an incredibly high level to boot. A three-star hotel will run you an average of a lovely $35 a night<\/strong>, while a luxury five-star experience can be had from around $139. A mid-range double room right in the heart of the city ranges from 700,000 to 1,500,000 VND, which works out to roughly $28 to $60. That’s exactly why I strongly recommend not skimping on the cheapest offers, but rather paying an extra $10 to $20 a night for a room with a window<\/strong> that’s at least two blocks away from the noisiest bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another great piece of news for your budget is the fact that Vietnam has extended its reduced 8% VAT rate until 31 December 2026<\/strong>. This discount also applies to accommodation, transport and restaurants, so you’ll save at every turn. Most hotels these days quote final prices with this tax already included, but watch out at the more upscale addresses, where a 5% service charge<\/strong> is commonly added on top of the bill.
