More than a quarter of this remote island at the very edge of the world is covered by impenetrable rainforests, wild rivers and rugged mountains that draw adventurers from all over the globe. What’s more, the northwestern headland of Cape Grim regularly records the cleanest air on Earth, because the wind here blows straight across the uninhabited Southern Ocean.

Although Tasmania is roughly the size of Ireland, its winding roads and constantly shifting landscape force you to slow down and savour every kilometre. Travellers rave about the relaxed local atmosphere, the outstanding regional food and the sheer amount of wildlife you won’t see anywhere else. Whether you crave alpine hikes, tastings of world-award-winning whisky, or just quiet reflection on empty beaches, this island will hand you memories for a lifetime.

Getting ready for a trip to these parts does take a little planning, though, because accommodation vanishes months in advance and the weather loves to do whatever it pleases. The following guide shows you where to save on national park entry, where to head first and which places deserve the most of your time. A windproof jacket and sturdy boots are an absolute must, and then all that’s left is to set off.

<figure Most travellers choose short hops from Melbourne, which take just one hour and twenty minutes to Hobart airport, or a little over an hour to Launceston further north. If you fly from Sydney, you’ll spend under two hours in the air, making flying by far the fastest and often the cheapest way to get across.

If you have more time and want a taste of maritime romance, you can take the famous Spirit of Tasmania ferry, which shuttles between mainland Geelong and Tasmania’s Devonport. This crossing covers 448 kilometres across the Bass Strait, takes nine to eleven hours and usually runs overnight. Ferry tickets start at roughly AUD 109 per person, but keep in mind that the route still uses older ships from the late 1990s (while the new vessels remain delayed).

The ferry pays off financially above all when you’re travelling in your own car and plan to stay on the island for more than ten days. I do have to warn you about one major catch, though, because most mainland car rental companies strictly forbid taking their vehicle on the ferry. So unless you have your own campervan or car, it’s far smarter to fly across and rent a vehicle right at the airport in Hobart or Launceston.

Parks Pass: How Not to Pay Twice

Entry to Tasmania’s national parks is charged, and the system can look a little confusing at first, but the right choice will save you plenty of money. A standard day pass costs AUD 49.15 per vehicle according to the price list valid from July 2026, or AUD 24.55 per person if you arrive by bus or bike. If you’re planning a classic road trip and visiting more than two parks, though, the day pass simply isn’t worth it and you’d just be throwing money away.

The holy grail for every traveller is the two-month Holiday Pass, which costs AUD 98.35 for the whole vehicle with up to eight passengers, or AUD 49.20 for a single person. With this card you get unlimited access to practically all protected areas on the island, which is ideal for a two-week itinerary and means you don’t have to fuss over payments at every barrier. For those staying even longer, there’s an annual version for AUD 104.75, but for a regular holiday the Holiday Pass is more than enough.

The one big exception to this system is the popular Cradle Mountain National Park, which runs its own specific regime to protect nature and enforce mandatory shuttle buses. A day ticket here costs AUD 30.70 per adult, AUD 12.30 per child and AUD 73.75 per family, with the price already including the compulsory shuttle to Dove Lake. If you’ve bought the Holiday Pass, entry to the park itself is free, but you’ll need to buy the bus ticket separately — AUD 15.50 for 72 hours.

When to Visit Tasmania: Weather Through the Year

Choosing the right season is absolutely crucial for a visit to Tasmania, because the weather here can be highly unpredictable and it shapes your whole experience. The island sees the biggest crowds in summer from December to February, when you can enjoy up to fifteen hours of daylight and pleasant temperatures for hiking and coastal exploring. You’ll have to accept, though, that accommodation is considerably pricier, popular trails get packed and there’s a real risk of bushfires that occasionally close some parks.

Spring and autumn offer, according to many travellers, the best possible compromise, because nature bursts with colour and the crowds thin out noticeably. The winter months from June to August then tempt visitors with much lower prices, snow-capped peaks and above all the fascinating southern lights over the island’s south, since Tasmania is the southernmost inhabited part of Australia. Bear in mind, though, that on Mount kunanyi rising above Hobart a snow flurry can surprise you even in the middle of hot summer, so warm clothing is a must all year round.

Whatever season you go in, you must be extremely careful on the roads, because Tasmania carries the sad title of the roadkill capital of the world. The local landscape is brimming with wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies and wombats that gather on the warm asphalt at dusk. For that reason it’s strongly recommended to limit your speed after dark to a maximum of 65 km/h, or better yet not drive at night at all, to protect both the unique fauna and your rental car.

Where to Stay

💡 Tip for accommodation and experiences: We prefer to look for accommodation on Booking.com, which usually has the best cancellation terms. For tickets, tours and activities, it’s worth comparing and booking through GetYourGuide.

Finding accommodation in Tasmania calls for strategic thinking, because outside the main towns you’ll run into very limited capacity that disappears at an incredible pace during the summer season. In Hobart, which will probably serve as your starting point, you’ll find a wide range of options from historic buildings to modern waterfront hotels. If you’re after something really special, book a room at the iconic MACq 01 Hotel on the waterfront, which works as a so-called storytelling hotel where every part tells tales from the island’s history. A great and slightly more affordable alternative right in the heart of the action is the popular Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart, from where everything is just a few steps away.

Your northern base for exploring will most likely be Launceston, which delights food and wine lovers and offers a slightly calmer atmosphere than the capital. The modern Hotel Verge Launceston has built a great reputation here, and travellers praise it for its excellent restaurant and strategic location close to all the main sights. When moving to the east coast towards the renowned Freycinet National Park, be sure to look for accommodation in the little town of Coles Bay, where you’ll find, for example, the beautiful Edge of the Bay resort, sitting right by the water with fascinating views over the landscape.

A chapter of its own is Cradle Mountain National Park, where demand in season vastly outstrips supply and prices climb to astronomical heights. The main lodge in the park sometimes draws criticism for what you get for your money, so locals recommend looking instead at the Cradle Mountain Hotel, which offers great comfort at a slightly more reasonable price. Whatever area you choose, I strongly recommend sorting out bookings through portals like Booking several months in advance, otherwise you’ll be left with only the most expensive or worst-rated options.

Where to Eat Well in Tasmania

Hunting down great food in Tasmania is a joy, because local chefs have the finest fresh ingredients straight from the farms and the ocean at their fingertips. In Hobart, definitely consider a reservation at Fico, which blends Italian cuisine with Australian ingredients. Its fame is well deserved and every course there is worth it. If you’re more in the mood for a quick classic, most people head for fish and chips at Mures Lower Deck right by the harbour, where it’s always pleasantly buzzing (vegetarians will find options at the surrounding stalls).

And what about the rest of the island? In Launceston I recommend a stop at Stillwater, set in a beautifully restored historic mill from the nineteenth century. Besides top-notch food, you’ll also be wowed by the view over the river. Travelling along the east coast, don’t miss the celebrated Freycinet Marine Farm. They pull the oysters straight out of the water here, and seafood lovers swear by it ☺️.

20 Best Things to See and Do in Tasmania

Picking the best of the whole island isn’t exactly easy, because every part of Tasmania offers a slightly different adventure. But whether you’re after dramatic mountain peaks, untouched white-sand beaches, or unique historic sites, these twenty tips will help you put together an amazing itinerary.

Some places you’ll breeze through in a couple of hours; for others, better set aside a whole day so you don’t have to rush. Above all, don’t forget to pack plenty of snacks and a good playlist for the car, because you’ll spend a lot of time soaking up stunning views right from the driver’s seat 😉.

Photo: JJ Harrison (https://www.jjharrison.com.au/) / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0

1. The city sits in the scenic estuary of the River Derwent, its streets lined with beautifully preserved colonial architecture from the nineteenth century, and yet you can reach the wilderness from the centre in under half an hour — a combination that captivates travellers most about Hobart.

If you come at the weekend, you absolutely mustn’t miss the Saturday Salamanca Market, ranked among the best markets in the entire Southern Hemisphere. Its founder David Walsh jokingly calls it a subversive Disneyland for adults, which perfectly captures the bizarre and fascinating atmosphere of this place. If you have any weakness for good food at all, Bruny Island will win you over — just spend a day hopping from farm to farm and tasting whatever you can.

💡 Tip: The ferries to the island get very busy in the summer season, so arrive at the port well in advance so you don’t have to wait around for the next crossing.

Photo: Charles J. A return ticket costs an adult AUD 59, and the thirty-minute crossing transports you to a place where time has stopped and where all motor vehicles are strictly banned. It’s the adorable wombats grazing carefree on the lawns who let you approach very close — something you’ll rarely be lucky enough to experience in the wild anywhere else. Little penguins return from the sea to the local beaches, and you can join an organised evening tour for AUD 56 to 76 to watch them in their natural habitat. Wineglass Bay and Freycinet

Freycinet National Park is the jewel of the east coast and home to probably the most photographed beach on the entire island. The trail to the famous lookout over Wineglass Bay, whose shape resembles a perfect wine glass, measures roughly 2.6 kilometres and the climb takes you an hour to an hour and a half. It’s a moderately demanding route on which you’ll break a sweat, but the view from the upper platform over the incredibly blue water and white sand is definitely worth the effort.

Many tourists turn back to the car after photographing the panorama, but travellers strongly recommend continuing down the path right to the beach. If you do the full eleven-kilometre loop via Hazards Beach, you’ll escape the main crowds and experience the true untouched beauty of the park, with the whole hike taking roughly four to five hours. For the most capable adventurers, there’s also a steep climb up Mount Amos, from which the view over the bay is absolutely unbeatable.

💡 Tip: Before you set off on the hike, always check the current alerts on the official national parks website, because occasionally there’s trail maintenance or a fire risk.

Photo: VirtualSteve / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0

12. A great choice is the lookout loop around the lighthouse at Cape Tourville, which you can walk in a pleasant twenty minutes. The wooden boardwalk winds high above the cliffs and offers fantastic panoramic views of the jagged coast and endless ocean, with only a mild incline to reckon with, so the route isn’t fully wheelchair-accessible.

Another hidden gem of the park, which many tourists don’t know about, are the sprawling Friendly Beaches, lying on the northern edge of the protected area. A nine-kilometre gravel road leads to them, but at its end you’re rewarded with kilometres of untouched white sand where you might well be completely alone. You’ll also find a basic campsite here, available at no extra charge if you already have your Parks Pass.

💡 Tip: The views from the Cape Tourville lighthouse are especially magical early in the morning at sunrise, when the surrounding granite rocks turn incredible shades of pink and orange.

Photo: Diego Delso / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0

13. Given its immense popularity, there’s a well-developed system of mandatory shuttle buses that take you from the visitor centre right to the lake, protecting the fragile local nature.

For most visitors, the main goal is the comfortable six-kilometre loop around the lake itself, which you can manage in two to three hours without much effort. But if you crave a proper adventure, set off on the demanding climb to the summit of Cradle Mountain itself, a roughly eight-hour hike involving steep scrambling over huge boulders. Another popular stop in the park is the short but magical twenty-minute Enchanted Walk, where you’ll feel like you’re in a fairy tale in a forest full of moss. It’s ideal to set aside at least two to three days for this area so you can head out on longer hikes or relax at the local spa with a view of nature.

💡 Tip: On the grassy plains around the Ronny Creek bus stop, you can very often see wild wombats, especially in the late afternoon when they come out to feed.

Photo: Davidjones2758 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

18. Overland Track

For lovers of multi-day treks, Tasmania represents one of the biggest dream destinations, thanks to the famous Overland Track. This legendary trek measures sixty-five kilometres and usually takes six days of walking through the wildest and most remote landscape on the island. The route starts right at Cradle Mountain and leads through rugged mountain terrain, deep valleys, ancient rainforests and peat bogs all the way to the beautiful Lake St Clair in the south.

Completing this trek, though, requires really careful planning and good physical fitness, because you have to carry all your food and gear on your back. In the main season from October to May, booking a permit in advance is absolutely mandatory and the direction of travel is strictly set from north to south, to prevent congestion on the trail. The price of this permit keeps rising — currently it comes to around three hundred dollars — but always double-check the exact amount well in advance on the national parks website.

💡 Tip: The weather on the trek is extremely changeable and a snowstorm can trap you in a hut even in the middle of summer, so don’t underestimate quality gear and plenty of spare food.

Photo: Juan Jose Basagoiti Mancera / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

19. Most people head here for the famous scenic cruises along the dark Gordon River, which take you deep into the heart of untouched, UNESCO-listed wilderness. During the cruise you’ll see the ominous Hells Gates strait and the ruins of the old convict colony on Sarah Island, an experience travellers love to look back on.

On the way west you’ll definitely pass through the mining town of Queenstown, which will shock you at first sight with its utterly barren, lunar landscape. Decades of ruthless copper mining and acid rain from the smelters destroyed practically all the vegetation on the surrounding hills, although nature has been slowly starting to return here in recent years. And one more thing: if you have a free morning, it’s worth taking a ride on the historic steam rack railway, the West Coast Wilderness Railway (it pushes through dense rainforest and the views from the windows are worth it).

💡 Tip: The road connecting Hobart with Queenstown is full of endless hairpin bends and steep drops, so allow considerably more time for the drive than you’d estimate from the map.

Photo: JJ Harrison (https://www.jjharrison.com.au/) / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0

20. Another huge name is the local brand Lark, so you can enjoy fantastic tastings all over the island.

Wine lovers will feel like they’re in paradise here, because the cooler climate perfectly suits varieties like pinot noir and the production of top-class sparkling wines. Head out for tastings in the renowned Tamar Valley or Coal River Valley, where local winemakers will enthusiastically show you around their picturesque vineyards and let you sample the best from their cellars. Good drinks, of course, go hand in hand with great food, and Tasmania excels above all in producing fantastic artisan cheeses, which are well worth the trip to the aforementioned Bruny Island.

The island was once often nicknamed the Apple Isle thanks to its huge historic apple exports, and this tradition is kept alive today by producers of excellent local ciders that you’ll find in every decent pub. Travellers also hugely praise the local bakeries, market stalls and cafés, where you get the best of the local harvest, from fresh truffles to raspberries and blueberries straight from the farm. From Hobart, head southeast to historic Port Arthur, then make your way up the east coast to the gorgeous Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay, and devote the last days to either the northern beaches of the Bay of Fires or a swing inland.

With 10 days you can already fit the island’s biggest mountain gem into your itinerary and enjoy travelling at a much calmer pace. After exploring the east coast, you’ll have enough time to move on to Launceston (roughly 198 kilometres from Hobart) and then for a two-day stop in Cradle Mountain National Park, which lies another 140 kilometres to the west. You’ll also have room for wine tastings in the Tamar Valley or penguin watching on the east coast, without any needless stress behind the wheel.

For a complete circuit including the wild and remote west coast, ideally set aside 14 days. This plan lets you explore the mysterious Gordon River at Strahan, drive through the fascinating lunar landscape around Queenstown and return to Hobart via the central highlands. Always remember that distances on the map are terribly deceptive, and the drive from Hobart to Cradle Mountain (293 kilometres) takes you almost four hours of pure driving on winding roads, so don’t plan your daily legs too long.

Where to Go Next

If you’re drawn to exploring Down Under and thinking about a broader itinerary, take a look at our article Holiday in Australia: 30 Most Beautiful Places + Practical Tips, where you’ll find plenty more inspiration. Tasmania is deceptively large and transfers along winding roads take much more time than it appears on the map.

Fly or take the ferry?

Flights from Melbourne or Sydney are very fast and often the cheaper option, especially if you rent a car on arrival. The Spirit of Tasmania ferry is better suited to travellers who have their own campervan and plan to stay on the island for a considerably longer time.

Do I need a car?

Yes, without your own or a rental car you’ll find Tasmania practically impossible to navigate, because public transport outside the main cities is extremely limited. Most national parks and remote beaches are only accessible by your own vehicle, so a car is an absolute necessity.

What is a Parks Pass and which one is worth it?

A Parks Pass is a mandatory permit for entry into national parks, and if you’re planning a classic road trip around the island, by far the best value is the two-month Holiday Pass. It costs 98.35 AUD per vehicle and covers entry to all parks except the shuttle bus fee at Cradle Mountain.

When is the best time to visit?

For hiking and outdoor activities, the best time is the summer period from December to February, when days last up to fifteen hours, but you’ll need to expect large crowds of tourists. Spring and autumn offer beautiful colours and more peace, while in winter you can see the aurora australis in the south of the island and save on accommodation.

Is Tasmania expensive?

For tourists, Tasmania can be quite costly, especially when it comes to accommodation in smaller locations near national parks during the summer season. Restaurant food prices are slightly higher than in Sydney, but you can save a lot of money by buying groceries at supermarkets and camping.

Is one day enough for Cradle Mountain?

For a quick walk around Dove Lake and a few photos, one day will be enough, but you’ll miss out on a lot of experiences. Ideally, set aside at least two to three days for this area so you can tackle longer hikes or relax in the local spa with views over nature.

Wineglass Bay: just the lookout, or walk down?

The climb to the lookout takes about an hour to an hour and a half and offers you the iconic view of the bay, but it tends to be absolutely packed with people. Travellers therefore strongly recommend spending more time on the full eleven-kilometre circuit and walking down directly to the beach, where you’ll experience amazing tranquillity without the crowds.

Will I see a Tasmanian devil?

In the wild, your chances of spotting a Tasmanian devil are virtually zero, because these animals are very shy, active at night, and suffer from a serious facial disease that has drastically reduced their population. However, rescue centres and sanctuaries are a sure bet, such as Bonorong near Hobart, where you can meet them face to face.

Is it safe to drive after dark?

It’s definitely not safe and car rental companies often warn against it themselves, because Tasmania has a huge number of animals hit on the roads. Kangaroos and wombats are very active at dusk, so you should drive at a maximum of 65 km/h at night, or ideally travel only in daylight.

Set off to discover Tasmania’s wild nature with our twenty tips, from the iconic Cradle Mountain to the snow-white beaches of Wineglass Bay.

Discover Tasmania, Australia with 20 top things to see, a road trip itinerary, weather tips and the best parks.
