\u00d6land, Sweden is an island of incredible contrasts, stretching 137 kilometres in length but only a few kilometres wide in places. Together with nearby Gotland, it racks up the highest number of sunny hours in all of Sweden \u2014 on an island that certainly isn’t shy about its good weather. While most of Europe associates Sweden with deep forests and lakes, here a completely different world awaits <\/strong>\u263a\ufe0f.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right in the middle of the island lies a vast limestone steppe where almost no trees grow, more reminiscent of an African savannah than traditional Scandinavia. \u00d6land is a Swedish summer classic that the rest of Europe still shamefully overlooks, even though German camper-van travellers have been coming here for years. A huge advantage is that you can reach it comfortably by car across a bridge, so you don’t have to deal with any expensive ferries from the mainland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might be wondering what the actual difference is between \u00d6land and neighbouring Gotland. While Gotland lures visitors mainly with the medieval Hanseatic town of Visby and dramatic limestone sea stacks called raukar, \u00d6land is the island of endless beaches, hundreds of old windmills and a completely flat landscape. <\/strong>In short, it’s an ideal destination for families with kids, keen cyclists and anyone who wants to experience a proper Nordic summer without mosquitoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
