The weather here, though, is quite different from the rest of Hawaii. The park sits at around 1,200 metres above sea level, so temperatures hover around 15–22 °C (yes, you can actually feel cold in Hawaii 😅). It’s also fairly humid and rains often, especially on the Kīlauea side, where the rainforest literally thrives on the constant moisture.

The best months are April–June and September–November. During these periods there are fewer tourists, less chance of rain and more pleasant temperatures. Summer (July–August) and the Christmas holidays are the busiest, with queues forming at popular spots like Thurston Lava Tube or the Jaggar Museum overlook.

One thing always holds true, though: come in the evening or at night too. If Kīlauea is active and there’s visible lava in the crater, after dark you’ll see a red glow reflecting off the clouds and crater walls. If you’re flying into the Big Island, you have two airports: Hilo (ITO) is closer, while Kona (KOA) is more popular and has more connections.

A car is basically a must. Public transport does exist on the Big Island (Hele-On Bus), but the connections are sparse and impractical for visiting the park. You can compare offers from all the rental companies in one place through RentalCars. In Hawaii, book as early as possible, because in high season cars are in short supply and prices shoot up.

If you’re flying from mainland USA or from Europe, look for cheap flights on Kiwi, our favourite portal for finding connections. There are no direct flights to Hawaii from most of Europe, so the most common connecting points are Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle. And if Hawaii tempts you in general, take a look at our guide to Maui, where you’ll find plenty more tips.

What to bring

This matters, because the park catches a lot of people off guard. You arrive from the beach in Kona in shorts and flip-flops and suddenly you’re standing in fog and 15 degrees. I recommend:

A jacket or hoodie: it gets genuinely cold in the evening and morning

A rain jacket: it rains here often and unexpectedly

Sturdy shoes: you won’t get far on the lava fields in flip-flops (for longer hikes, proper hiking boots are ideal)

Plenty of water and a snack: there’s only one restaurant and one small shop in the park

A torch or headlamp: for night-time crater viewing and possibly Thurston Lava Tube (part of the cave is unlit)

Sunscreen: even when it’s overcast, UV radiation at this altitude is strong

Where to stay + how much a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park costs

Let’s break down how much a visit to the park will cost you and where’s best to sleep. Volcano Village: a tiny town literally 5 minutes from the park entrance. This is option number one. You’ll find B&Bs, small hotels and lots of Airbnbs in charming wooden cabins in the middle of the rainforest. The atmosphere is absolutely magical. You wake up in the morning to birdsong and mist creeping through the trees. Hilo: the largest town on the eastern side of the island, 45 minutes from the park. More affordable, with more restaurants and shops. Hilo is a more “authentic” Hawaiian town, less touristy, rainier, but with a wonderful atmosphere. Accommodation from $80 a night (about €70) in a motel up to $200+ in nicer hotels.

3. The main reason people come here. Halemaʻumaʻu Crater is a huge crater inside an even bigger crater (the Kīlauea caldera), and it’s the place where the most dramatic eruptions of recent years have taken place.

In Hawaiian mythology, Halemaʻumaʻu is the home of Pele, the goddess of fire, lava and volcanoes. It’s a sacred place in Hawaiian culture and you can feel that respect there. You’ll see people bringing offerings (flowers, fruit) to the crater’s edge.

The best views are from several viewpoints along the Crater Rim Trail. By day you’ll see a huge crater with a steaming floor and walls in every shade of ochre, grey and black. The moment worth staying for, though, comes at night: the red glow of lava reflecting off the clouds above the crater. Then suddenly the forest ends, you descend a steep path and you’re standing on the floor of the crater. A flat black plain of hardened lava, with steam rising here and there. It’s a lava cave, a tunnel formed when the surface of a lava flow hardened while the lava inside kept flowing and eventually drained away, leaving a hollow.

The whole walk takes about 20–30 minutes. First you pass through a stretch of beautiful rainforest (dense, green and wet, a completely different world from the lava fields just minutes away), then you enter the cave. The main part of the tunnel is lit and has a paved path, so it’s a comfortable walk suitable for families with kids and pushchairs.

For the adventurous: Beyond the lit section there’s an unlit stretch of tunnel you can explore with a torch. It crosses open lava field (no shade and a lot of sun, so a hat and water are essential), but the terrain is relatively flat.

On site you’ll find wooden boardwalks from which you look down on hundreds of carvings: circles, human figures, canoes, animals. Many of them are piko, small holes where the umbilical cord of newborns was placed as a symbol of connection to this land. You don’t have to do the whole loop (it’s over 17 km), just pick out the sections that interest you.

The most popular sections run from the Visitor Center to the Steam Vents and on to the Kīlauea Overlook. The individual stretches are mostly easy and paved, so they’re suitable for less experienced hikers too.

Watch out: Part of the trail on the southwest side (around Halemaʻumaʻu) is often closed due to volcanic gases (SO₂). It’s the largest active volcano in the world. Measured from its base on the ocean floor, it rises over 9,000 metres, making it one of the most massively built mountains on the planet. Most visitors don’t see Mauna Loa as a “volcano” because it’s so vast and gently sloping that it doesn’t look dramatic. That’s precisely what makes it fascinating.

If you’re an experienced trekker, you can set off on the Mauna Loa Trail. But the climb to the summit is extremely demanding (over 60 km there and back, 2–4 days, altitude over 4,000 m) and requires a permit and serious preparation. Altitude sickness is a real risk.

For ordinary visitors, I recommend at least driving up to the Mauna Loa Lookout. A turn-off from the main road (Mauna Loa Road) runs about 22 km uphill, from where you get views of both volcanoes. The road is narrow and winding, but a regular car can handle it.

11. It was originally called Hawaii National Park and included Haleakalā on Maui too (which split off in 1961). 2. Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. From 1983 to 2018 it erupted lava almost continuously, one of the longest eruptions in recorded history. 3. Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on Earth by volume, with an estimated volume of 75,000 km³. If you measured it from its base on the ocean floor, it would be taller than Mount Everest. 4. The park is one of the few places in the world where you can see all five climate zones, from tropical coast to the subarctic summit of Mauna Loa. 5. The Puʻu Loa petroglyph site has over 23,000 carvings, one of the richest in the entire Pacific. 6. Thurston Lava Tube is about 500 years old, yet it looks as if the lava drained away only yesterday. 7. During the 2018 Kīlauea eruption, over 700 homes were destroyed in the Leilani Estates area outside the park. The lava flows added nearly 3.5 km² of new land to the coast. 8. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1987) and an international biosphere reserve. 9. The nēnē (Hawaiian goose), Hawaii’s official state bird, lives in the park. It was nearly wiped out (only 30 individuals remained in the 1950s), but thanks to conservation programmes the population has recovered to over 3,000 birds. 10. The goddess Pele is still a living part of belief in Hawaiian culture. Visitors who take lava rocks from the park reportedly often send them back, because they’re said to bring bad luck.
