The train stops at waterfalls, occasionally has to wait for a herd of reindeer to cross the tracks, and offers an incredibly romantic experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Swedish SJ high-speed trains on the main line between Malm\u00f6, Gothenburg and Stockholm, on the other hand, work on the same principle as flights. They require a compulsory seat reservation and it’s worth buying them well in advance<\/strong>. If you try to buy a ticket at the station five minutes before departure, you might easily pay triple the original price. The Cashless Trap and the Swish App<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n\ud83d\udca1 Tip: Don’t bring paper kronor or euros to Sweden at all<\/strong>, because you almost certainly won’t be able to spend them anywhere. Sweden is probably the furthest along in cashless payments of any country in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWith an ordinary payment card you can pay absolutely everywhere, even the smallest espresso or a toilet ticket you tap without batting an eye<\/strong>. The real problem for tourists is that many places today flatly refuse to accept cash. The famous Vasa ship museum in Stockholm, for example, operates strictly card-only and will hand your paper banknotes straight back at the till.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOn top of that there’s the Swedish national payment app Swish<\/strong>. Locals absolutely love it and use it to pay for everything from a bar tab to buying strawberries at the roadside. As a tourist, unfortunately, you can’t get it, because it strictly requires a Swedish personal number and a local bank account. So you often get stuck at flea markets, rural veg stalls or church collections, where there’s no classic card terminal and nobody has any way to make change for cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\nYour only weapon is a reliable payment card. When paying at a terminal, always make sure you choose to be charged in Swedish kronor (SEK). Never let the terminal convert the amount into your home currency, because the so-called DCC conversion always uses an unfavourable rate. Food is what ultimately decides the total budget of your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSwedish hotel breakfasts are phenomenal in a way that will persuade you to stay at the table an hour longer than you planned. Bread, local cheeses, porridge \u2014 basically everything. They fill you up richly for half the day and you can head out into the streets on a full stomach. In the evening you then sort things out with a lighter meal at a bistro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For families and nature lovers the absolutely unbeatable choice is the classic red cabin called a stuga<\/strong>. You’ll find them in every campsite across the country. They tend to be simply but very practically furnished and, most importantly, they have their own little kitchen. Cooking for yourself saves you a small fortune on expensive restaurant dinners<\/strong>. If you plan to camp or stay in cabins more often, it’s worth getting a Camping Key Europe card, which speeds up the check-in process and often brings interesting discounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAn absolute gem of the Swedish landscape are the wooden shelters called vindskydd<\/strong>. These simple huts, open on one side, stand on the shores of lakes and along hiking trails. They’re completely free, equipped with a fireplace and sometimes even a supply of dry wood. Allemansr\u00e4tten and Sleeping in Nature for Free<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n\ud83d\udca1 Tip: Make the most of the unique right of free access to nature, but always stick to the rule of not disturbing and not damaging<\/strong>. Swedish nature is an open embrace and there are no barbed wire fences in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAllemansr\u00e4tten is the greatest Swedish freedom. You can pitch a tent practically anywhere in a forest, in a meadow or by a beautiful lake, as long as you keep a respectful distance from the nearest dwelling<\/strong>. The golden rule says you can stay in one spot for one, at most two nights, and you mustn’t camp so close that people can look straight into your tent from their living room window. You must unconditionally respect this so-called hemfridszon (the private zone around a house).<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe biggest mistake travellers make is applying this right to their vehicles too. Allemansr\u00e4tten absolutely does not apply to motorhomes and caravans.<\/strong> The off-road driving law strictly forbids taking a van off marked roads onto a meadow or a beach. You can only park and sleep overnight at tarmac lay-bys beside roads, at designated st\u00e4llplats stops or in classic campsites.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIf you’re heading into national parks, remember that stricter rules apply there and allemansr\u00e4tten often gives way to nature conservation. It’s the best food deal in the whole country.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAn ordinary dinner in a Stockholm restaurant will set you back 150 to 250 SEK for a main course, and considerably more in a nicer place. The saviour is the magic phrase dagens lunch, meaning the daily menu<\/strong>. Most restaurants, from ordinary bistros to very solid establishments, offer it roughly between eleven and two in the afternoon for a very reasonable 120 to 150 SEK (\u20ac11 to \u20ac13).<\/p>\n\n\n\nFor that price you don’t just get a bare main course. In Sweden it’s standard that the price includes an unlimited salad buffet, fresh bread with butter, water and coffee to finish<\/strong>. There’s always a great meat-free option, whether it’s excellent falafel, creamy vegetable ragout, halloumi burgers or hearty soups. The local meat speciality is of course k\u00f6ttbullar meatballs with cream sauce, which, however, cost considerably more outside the lunch menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWith every meal you also get excellent tap water, kranvatten, completely free<\/strong>. Nobody will look at you sideways for not ordering an expensive soft drink; drinking water with your meal is completely standard here.
