This is where you run into the rule tired parents most often miss \u2014 the <strong>strict seven-day deadline<\/strong> for reporting damage in writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These seven days from collecting your baggage are a hard limit set by international law, and once they pass, carriers usually reject claims without mercy. So treat this deadline as <strong>absolutely non-negotiable<\/strong> and don&#8217;t wait to deal with it until you&#8217;re back home from your holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you only notice the damage at your accommodation, you have to find the baggage claim form on the relevant airline&#8217;s website and fill it in online right away. And don&#8217;t forget to <strong>attach all the documents you&#8217;ve photographed<\/strong> to this electronic request \u2014 a copy of the PIR report, the baggage tag, your boarding pass, and of course sharp photos of the damaged parts of the stroller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_The_Montreal_Convention_and_the_compensation_limit\"><\/span>4. With some more accommodating airlines this might be fine, but with others you&#8217;re automatically slamming the door on any future compensation. In Spain, for instance, children up to 135 centimetres must be in a certified seat under threat of a 300-euro fine, and in Italy the requirement applies all the way up to 150 centimetres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taxis are exempt from this rule in some countries, but that certainly doesn&#8217;t solve your problem with the rental car at the pick-up desk. How to fight back when the airline rejects your claim<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a stroller gets destroyed, you essentially have two parallel routes to claim your money back. The first is the air carrier&#8217;s liability under the Montreal Convention, which has no excess to pay but is often very bureaucratic. The second route is your commercial <strong>travel baggage insurance<\/strong>, which tends to be heavily restricted by various sub-limits, and the insurer always factors in depreciation based on the age of the item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common practice is to file an official claim with the airline itself first. If the carrier pays out only part of the damage or rejects the claim on grounds your policy covers, you can take that rejection <strong>to your insurer<\/strong> and request a top-up up to your agreed limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do have to be extremely careful never to receive <strong>double compensation for the same item<\/strong>, because you can&#8217;t get the full price from the airline and then the same amount from the insurer. Right before you hand the stroller over at the boarding gate or at check-in, <strong>photograph it thoroughly from several angles<\/strong> with your phone. Today&#8217;s phones save the exact time and GPS location into the photo, so you get watertight proof of its flawless condition before handing it to airport staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airport sorting belts are ruthless with luggage, so you have to <strong>remove absolutely everything<\/strong> that sticks out from the stroller. Take off the cup holder, plastic tray, parasol and any clipped-on toys and stash them in your hand luggage, because these little bits are the first to snap off in the hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re handing over the stroller without a bag as an exception, make sure it&#8217;s firmly clicked into its transport lock, and to be safe <strong>tighten it with a luggage strap<\/strong> so it doesn&#8217;t unfold on its own. Bear in mind that at many airports the relaxed liquid rules, allowing containers of up to two litres, only apply at certain terminals \u2014 always check which terminal your <strong>Ryanair, easyJet or Wizz Air<\/strong> flight departs from, as the strict 100-millilitre limit per container often still applies at older terminals and for flights outside the Schengen area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that baby food, boiled water for formula and purees enjoy a <strong>worldwide exemption at airports<\/strong>, and you can bring these in the quantity needed for the journey regardless of the airline&#8217;s limit, because they&#8217;re governed by the airport&#8217;s own rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for settling a child during the flight, I never recommend any sleeping medication, and extra caution applies to the much-discussed melatonin.
