TL;DR<\/strong>Entry to the permanent collection of the British Museum<\/strong> is completely free in 2026 \u2014 the museum only suggests a voluntary donation of around \u00a35 (about \u20ac6), and you only pay for temporary exhibitions. Of the eight million objects, only about 1% are on display, yet 2\u20133 hours are enough to see the main highlights like the Rosetta Stone<\/strong>, the Parthenon Sculptures, the Egyptian mummies, the Sutton Hoo treasure or the Assyrian winged bulls if you follow a well-planned itinerary. It’s best to arrive Tuesday to Thursday at 10 a.m. sharp, or take advantage of the Friday opening hours until 8:30 p.m., when it tends to be quiet. Booking a timed ticket online in advance is essential \u2014 otherwise you risk a queue of up to 45 minutes \u2014 and the rear entrance from Montague Place is the smarter choice. From September 2026, the big new arrival will be the Bayeux Tapestry, with a special ticket.<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n

But don’t expect to get through it in one sleepy afternoon. Only about one percent of the collection is on display<\/strong>, yet even that means kilometres of corridors and dozens of huge halls.
