The Estonian islands number more than two thousand pieces of land, but only a small handful of them are inhabited and accessible to curious travellers. When locals say they’re heading to the islands for the weekend, it means a perfect escape from civilization and time slowing down completely<\/strong>. The air here smells of the sea and juniper, and the mobile signal mercifully disappears every now and then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this Nordic romance comes with one enormous catch that ordinary guidebooks often keep quiet about. For roughly half the year the main Estonian islands are practically closed<\/strong> and all tourist life freezes over completely. If you plan your trip well for the warm summer season, though, an absolutely breathtaking experience awaits you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what can you expect on these islands? I’ll let you in on how best to get there, why you can’t move around without a car<\/strong>, and what you really need to watch out for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
