class="ez-toc-section-end">

Picking the right dates is absolutely key to visiting this Savoyard gem. Annecy has a curious quality — it’s beautiful all year round, but every month offers a completely different experience. The biggest tourist crush comes in July and August, when the French take their long summer holidays, which run for a full eight weeks. During this period temperatures regularly climb towards 30 °C and the lake water is perfectly warmed up for swimming, but the streets of the old town turn into impassable rivers of people. If you don’t mind queueing for ice cream and paying noticeably more for accommodation, the summer atmosphere by the water has its own unmistakable and lively charm.

If you’d rather enjoy the town in peace and without the stress, plan your trip for May, June or September instead. The spring months are fantastic because there’s still snow on the surrounding peaks, yet down by the lake everything is in bloom and temperatures hover around a pleasant 22 °C. The water is still fairly refreshing in May, but for hardier swimmers that’s no problem at all. September is, according to many locals, the most beautiful month of all — the lake stays warm after summer, the crowds of families with children disappear, and the autumn sun gives the entire mountain landscape a gorgeous golden glow.

Winter in Annecy has its own romance, though be prepared that many outdoor activities naturally fall away. In December the town wraps itself in Christmas lights and the traditional alpine markets open up with mulled wine and melted cheese. During this period Annecy makes a great quiet base from which to head out to the nearby ski resorts in the Aravis massif, served by regular winter bus routes. If you fancy adding a little variety to your trip, in early December (in 2026 it falls on 5–8 December) the spectacular Festival of Lights, the Fête des Lumières, takes place in nearby Lyon, an easy day trip by train from Annecy.

For 2026, keep a particularly close eye on the dates of the Tour de France, which will be heavily alpine this year. The critical days will be around 24 and 25 July, when the demanding stages finish on the nearby Alpe d’Huez. During these days, accommodation across the wider region vanishes from the market a year in advance and transport practically collapses due to road closures. It’s also worth checking the calendar of French strikes, since a national rail strike has already been announced for 10 June 2026, for example.

Photo: Magda Ehlers / Pexels

Where to Stay in Annecy

💡 Accommodation and experience tip: We like to look for accommodation on Booking.com, where the cancellation terms tend to be the best. Annecy isn’t huge in size, but the differences between the various neighbourhoods are vast, both in atmosphere and in price. The biggest draw is, naturally, the historic centre — the Vieille Ville. Staying right above the canals means you have all the restaurants and sights literally on your doorstep. But bear in mind that the lanes get very noisy in the evening, the historic buildings often have no lifts, and parking a car in the centre is extremely expensive and complicated.

For a much calmer stay with a touch of luxury, look for accommodation right on the lakeshore towards the Les Marquisats or Albigny districts. Here you’ll find lovely hotels with direct views over the water and the mountains behind. The downside is, of course, the price, which in the summer months of 2026 easily tops €200 a night for a double room. If, on the other hand, you’re after a happy medium and a friendlier budget, look for hotels around the main train station (Gare d’Annecy), from where it’s barely ten minutes’ walk to the centre and prices are far more reasonable.

If you’re planning to travel around the region in a hire car, watch out very carefully for low-emission zones and tolls. In France you pay tolls on the motorways of roughly €9.50 per 100 kilometres, and some new sections now run a so-called Free-Flow system without barriers, where you have to pay the charge online by number plate. What’s more, if you plan a trip to nearby Lyon, you’ll absolutely need a Crit’Air 1 or 2 eco sticker — without it you risk a fine of up to €375. Palais de l’Île and the Labyrinth of Canals

This is the single most famous view of all of Annecy — it adorns just about every postcard and graces the cover of every guidebook. The Palais de l’Île is an incredibly photogenic 12th-century building that stands right in the middle of the main canal of the River Thiou. Its unique shape resembles a stone ship’s prow boldly cutting through the flowing water, optically dividing the canal into two arms. Although it looks very romantic and peaceful today, its history is rather dark and full of twists.

Over the centuries the building served all sorts of purposes — from the seat of a powerful local ruler, through a mint and a stern court of justice, to a feared prison from which there was supposedly no escape. Today it houses a very interesting museum that charts not only the architecture of the building itself but also the wider history of the town. Adult admission costs around €4, a sum that makes a peek into the medieval cells well worth it.

Even if you decide not to go inside, a stroll along the cobbled embankments around the palace is an absolute must. Just let yourself drift along with the crowd, take in the lavish floral displays on the railings of the surrounding bridges, and listen to the soothing murmur of the water.

💡 Tip: You’ll get the best, completely empty photo of the palace early in the morning, ideally before nine o’clock. During the day the bridges get jammed with tourists and it’s very hard to capture a shot without dozens of strangers in the background. The soft morning light also beautifully picks out the old stonework.

Photo: Yasintha Dinuk / Pexels

2. The Turquoise Miracle of Lake Annecy

The lake is the absolute centre of all the action and the main reason people head here from all over Europe every summer. Lake Annecy formed roughly eighteen thousand years ago through the gradual melting of huge alpine glaciers, and to this day it’s fed by powerful underground mountain springs. It proudly holds the official title of one of the cleanest lakes in Europe, a direct result of the massive and very strict environmental measures the town introduced back in the 1960s. The colour of the water is so intense and richly turquoise that at times it really does resemble exotic beaches somewhere in the Caribbean.

A walk along the wide promenade by the shore is an enormously calming experience. You can sit down on a bench in the shade of centuries-old plane trees, watch white sailing boats slicing across the surface and enjoy the view of the steep mountain massifs that hem the lake in on every side. The water is also crystal clear, so even at a depth of several metres you can easily see right down to the stony bottom — something you’ll especially appreciate during summer swimming, when the temperature reaches up to 24 °C.

If you want to enjoy the lake from a different perspective, I recommend paying for a sightseeing cruise on a large boat, or hiring a paddleboard. The large boats depart several times a day from the harbour near the centre and offer circuits lasting from one to two hours. During the cruise you’ll hear an interesting commentary on the history of the surrounding villages and get a close-up look at even the most luxurious alpine villas, which are very often hidden from the shore behind high walls.

Photo: Lora Rikky / Pexels

3. Pont des Amours (the Bridge of Love)

As you walk alongside the crystal-clear lake towards the huge Jardins de l’Europe park, you’ll come across a gorgeous iron bridge that elegantly arches over the canal linking the lake with the town. The Pont des Amours is one of the most iconic and romantic spots in Annecy, tied to a lovely, if perhaps slightly kitschy, legend. They say that if two lovers kiss in the exact middle of this bridge, they’ll stay together forever. Whether you believe in such tales or prefer to stick to the facts, you definitely shouldn’t skip a walk across it.

The bridge itself is a masterful example of intricate early 20th-century ironwork, and it offers two diametrically different views. Look one way and you have before you the open expanse of the lake fringed by majestic mountains and the green island of Île des Cygnes. It’s a panoramic view that takes your breath away in every season, especially in the morning mist.

Turn the other way on the bridge and you’ll see the charming Canal du Vassé, lined with a dense avenue of old, mighty trees. Wooden boats are moored right next to each other in perfect shade, and the whole scene feels incredibly peaceful and homely. It’s an ideal spot for a short pause to soak up that genuine Savoyard atmosphere before you plunge into the whirl of the busy old-town streets.

Photo: Eky Rima Nurya Ganda / Pexels

4. Climbing Up to the Medieval Château d’Annecy

Above the entire historic centre, like a silent stone guardian, towers a majestic castle that dominates the town from every angle. The Château d’Annecy was once the grand residence of the powerful Counts of Geneva, and in later centuries it passed under the influence of the important House of Savoy. The path to the castle climbs a fairly steep hill through a tangle of narrow romantic lanes and up old stone steps, where it’s easy to lose yourself in time. Even if you work up a bit of a sweat, the climb is definitely worth the effort — the quiet courtyard alone offers a fantastic space to rest.

But the main draw of the castle complex is undoubtedly the panoramic view. From the massive ramparts you’ll see exactly those famous red roofs of the historic houses huddled around the winding canals, with the blue expanse of the lake glinting in the distance. It’s the best place to grasp the overall geography of the town, because from here you have the whole region laid out before you. The castle is also a beautiful illustration of gradual architectural evolution, where austere medieval defensive towers stand alongside elegant Renaissance palaces with large windows.

Inside you’ll now find an extensive museum, carefully divided into several sections. Part of the exhibition is devoted to traditional alpine folk art, decorated furniture and detailed woodcarvings, while another part hides a modern observatory focused on the ecology and biology of alpine lakes. Admission costs roughly €6 and touring the whole site takes about an hour and a half. Even if you’re not a passionate museum fan, I recommend buying a ticket just for that view.

Photo: HAMZA YAICH / Pexels

5. Cycling the Voie Verte

If there’s one activity you definitely shouldn’t miss in Annecy, it’s cycling around the lake. Running along the water is one of the oldest and best-maintained cycle paths in all of France, the so-called Voie Verte, or Green Way. The full circuit measures just over 40 kilometres and for the vast majority is completely separated from car traffic, making it a very safe and wonderful bit of fun even for families with younger children. The path partly follows the route of a disused railway, so there are no brutal climbs waiting for you.

The western shore of the lake, heading towards the villages of Sevrier and Saint-Jorioz, is completely flat, and riding along it is pure joy. You can stop absolutely whenever you like, roll down a few metres to the water and have a relaxed swim. The eastern shore is a touch more demanding — the road climbs into the hills and on some stretches you have to share a lane with cars, but your reward will be the most beautiful views over the lake at sunset. If you don’t fancy the full forty-kilometre circuit, just ride to the halfway point of the lake and return to town the same comfortable way.

There are countless bike-hire shops in town and you’ll find them on every corner. In the 2026 season, prices for a full-day hire of a classic city bike are around €20, while a more comfortable e-bike costs roughly double. During the main summer season I strongly recommend booking your bikes online a few days in advance, because the best ones tend to be snapped up early in the morning. Many hire shops also offer practical child trailers or safety helmets included in the price.

Photo: Nana V / Pexels

@import url("https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Playfair+Display:wght@700&family=DM+Sans:wght@300;400;500;600&display=swap");
/* === LK GYG karty — CRO redesign 2026-05 (namespace .lkx-) ===
 Cíl: vyšší CTR (hero + výrazný social proof + akční CTA, méně "reklamní").
 Injektuje se inline do prvního markeru postu (refresh_cards.py --inline-css). */
.lkx-module, .lkx-module *{box-sizing:border-box;margin:0;padding:0}
.lkx-module{
 font-family:'DM Sans',-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,Georgia,sans-serif;
 max-width:860px;margin:2.5rem auto;color:#1f2328;
}

/* HEADER — lehký editorský, žádný bannerový blok; Swimming and the Best Beaches

Lake Annecy isn’t just for romantic gazing from the shore — in the summer months it works as a huge natural swimming pool for the whole area. Even though it’s constantly fed by melting mountains, the water temperature in July and August routinely reaches a very pleasant 22 to 24 °C. The water is so unbelievably clean that swimming in it feels like floating on air. There are plenty of beaches all around the lake, from busy town stretches to small hidden coves you’ll only find if you venture further out from the centre by bike.

The most accessible and best known among tourists is Plage d’Albigny, which lies just a short way east of the historic centre. It’s a long beach covered in fine grass mixed with sand, with a very gentle entry into the water and plenty of natural shade thanks to mature trees. Entry is completely free and you’ll find lifeguards and public showers here. On the opposite side of town lies Plage des Marquisats, a little smaller, also pleasantly grassy and offering a lovely view straight onto the Tournette mountain massif.

💡 Tip: If you’re after a somewhat quieter experience and don’t mind travelling a few kilometres out of town, head to the beach in the village of Doussard at the very southern end of the lake, or to the popular paid beach in Talloires. Entry in Talloires costs around €3, but for that you get absolutely perfect facilities, wooden jetties made for jumping into the water, and a much more intimate atmosphere than on the noisy town beaches.

Photo: Olivier Darny / Pexels

7. Hiking Up Mont Veyrier for the View

For those of you who like to push yourselves a little on holiday and won’t settle for admiring the mountains from below at a café, there’s the Mont Veyrier massif. This wooded ridge rises right on the eastern shore of the lake and offers some of the most stunning panoramic views in the entire Savoyard region. It’s not exactly an easy stroll, so be prepared for a proper mountain climb, but technically it’s nothing extreme and anyone with at least basic fitness can manage it.

The most common route starts just above the Veyrier-du-Lac district, which you can reach by bus. The trail quickly leads you out of the built-up area into dense forest and starts climbing steeply up rocky switchbacks. After about an hour and a half you’ll reach the first viewpoint by the old cable-car station (Ancien Téléphérique), which hasn’t worked for decades. Here a fantastic view opens up before you, with the whole lake below like a huge blue droplet, and on a clear day you’ll even spot the snowy summit of majestic Mont Blanc on the horizon.

If you count yourself among the truly seasoned hikers and Mont Veyrier isn’t enough, you can attempt the climb up the mighty La Tournette. This is a considerably more demanding full-day trek to over 2,300 metres, requiring sturdy footwear and plenty of supplies, but it rewards you with the finest alpine scenery. Whichever route you choose, always remember to bring plenty of drinking water and a snack, because up on the ridges you won’t find a single mountain hut or refreshment stand.

Photo: SlimMars 13 / Pexels

8. A Trip to Talloires and the Old Abbey

About halfway along the eastern shore of the lake lies the charming village of Talloires, which looks exactly how you’d picture luxurious French countryside from the movies. It’s nestled in a perfect little bay, surrounded on all sides by steep mountains, radiating incredible calm and elegance. Talloires is closely tied to the history of its ancient abbey (Abbaye de Talloires), founded here on the shore back in the 11th century. Today it’s been converted into a luxury hotel for a discerning clientele, but its historic charm and beautiful courtyard have been preserved and you can largely view them freely.

You can get to the village by bike along the eastern branch of the cycle path, or by regular bus, but by far the most beautiful way is over the water. Hop on the public boat bus (Navette lacustre) in Annecy, which in the summer season runs like ordinary public transport, and let it carry you straight to the small picturesque harbour in Talloires. A walk through the village’s winding lanes, full of art galleries and flowers, won’t take you more than an hour, but it’s a visual balm for the soul.

Last but not least, Talloires is world-famous as a beloved paragliding mecca. Right above the village is the famous launch site on the Col de la Forclaz pass. Even if you’re not planning to fly with an instructor yourself, it’s fascinating to sit down by the water with a coffee and watch dozens of colourful canopies silently drifting down from the sky and landing on the dedicated meadow right next to the village. It’s a soothing spectacle that’s now an inseparable part of this place.

Photo: geng geng / Pexels

9. Markets in the Old Town

If you want to experience the real taste and smell of French life firsthand, you absolutely must head to the local markets. In the historic centre of Annecy they’re held faithfully three times a week — on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sunday mornings. On these days the entire old town turns into one huge, buzzing marketplace, with stalls lining the narrow canals and the air filled with the scent of fresh crusty bread, dried Provençal herbs and, above all, ripening cheeses. It’s a wonderful visual and gastronomic experience you mustn’t miss.

You’ll find absolutely everything the French land has to offer here. From fresh fruit and vegetables straight from local farmers, through mounds of marinated olives, to giant wheels of hard alpine cheese. For vegetarians it’s a paradise on earth, because French cheese production has no rival. Stop at one of the cheesemongers and have them cut you a slice of the delicate local Reblochon or the hard mountain cheese Beaufort. The sellers are usually very chatty and happy to let you taste before you buy anything.

💡 Tip: The Sunday market tends to be by far the biggest and busiest, because people from the surrounding villages come in to shop too. I recommend arriving really early, by eight in the morning at the latest. By around eleven the lanes are packed solid, and at high noon the stalls start packing up. Remember that in France the rules around lunch are sacred, so between twelve and two o’clock people simply eat and everything else takes a back seat.

10. Pedalos and Boats on the Lake

Looking at the turquoise lake from the shore is all very well, but being right out on it is a completely different dimension of experience. Hiring a pedalo (pédalo in French) or a small motorboat is practically an institution in Annecy and ranks among the most popular summer pastimes. Around the shady Jacquet lakeside promenade you’ll find dozens of small hire stands offering various types and sizes of craft. You don’t need any kind of skipper’s licence whatsoever — the staff will explain the basics of steering in five minutes and off you go onto the water.

Most modern pedalos these days come equipped with a little slide, which is a genius invention. You can pedal a few hundred metres out from the shore, where the bustle of town no longer reaches you, drop anchor and simply slide straight into the refreshing deep water. The hire price for a pedalo for 2 to 4 people in 2026 is around €25 to €30 per hour. Small motorboats are a touch pricier, coming in at roughly €50 an hour, but they let you explore a far larger part of the lake without the slightest physical effort.

When out on the water you need to follow a few basic safety rules. The large excursion boats always have right of way on the lake, so get out of their way well in advance. Also take great care not to sail too close to the shores of protected nature reserves, which are very clearly marked on the surface with buoys. But out on the open water you’ll enjoy an incredible feeling of freedom and calm.

11. A Vegetarian Savoyard Feast

French gastronomy can sometimes be a tricky nut to crack for vegetarians, but the mountain region of Savoy is a shining exception in this regard. The local traditional cuisine is heavily built on potatoes, cream and, above all, an incredible amount of delicious melted cheese. Forget about diets and counting calories for a moment — here people eat to warm up and for the sheer joy of living. The restaurants in the old town compete over who can offer the most authentic alpine experience.

The absolute classic is Fondue Savoyarde, a hot pot full of a bubbling mix of three types of local cheese, into which you dip pieces of bread on long forks. Another fantastic choice is the traditional Raclette — you get a special little grill on which you melt slices of cheese yourself, then scrape them onto hot boiled potatoes with pickled gherkins. Although local cured meats are commonly served with raclette, every good restaurant will gladly leave them out on request or swap them for an extra portion of vegetables and salad. Just watch out for the dish called Tartiflette (baked potatoes with cheese), which in its traditional version always contains bacon, so be sure to check whether they can make a meat-free vegetarian version.

When planning your meals, keep France’s strict rules in mind. Lunch is served precisely between 12:00 and 14:00 — after that hour the kitchens close mercilessly and you’ll get a coffee or croissant at most. As for paying, the tip (service compris) is already included in the price by law in France, so you only need to leave one or two euros in coins on the table as a thank-you; you usually can’t add a tip via the card terminal.

12. The Wild Les Gorges du Fier Canyon

If you feel you’ve already seen everything in Annecy itself and want to escape town for a while, head about ten kilometres west. There you’ll find a fascinating natural phenomenon that’s well worth a short trip. Les Gorges du Fier is an incredibly narrow and deep gorge carved into the hard limestone rock by the wild River Fier. This place shows the enormous, unstoppable power of nature in its purest form and reminds you just how dramatic French geology can be (much like the far larger and more famous canyons on the River Ardèche in the south).

You tour this gorge along safe wooden walkways that are literally bolted straight into the vertical rock face. You’ll be walking more than twenty-five metres above the rushing river current, which roars and swirls beneath you constantly. In places the canyon is so narrow you could almost touch the opposite wall. The rocks also bear clearly marked lines showing the water level during historic floods, which send a shiver down your spine.

The walk along the walkways is physically undemanding, completely safe even for children and takes you a little under an hour. Tickets for 2026 cost a pleasant €6 per person. Incidentally, it’s an absolutely brilliant place to escape the afternoon summer heat, because a pleasant coolness reigns in the gorge all day long. At the end of the route you’ll come across the so-called Sea of Rocks, a fascinating geological formation full of stone blocks scoured by water into bizarre shapes. You can easily reach the gorge by suburban bus from the centre of Annecy.

Some special tours and discount transport cards for getting around the region can be arranged in advance. It’s worth mentioning that many tickets for local activities can easily be bought online through platforms like GetYourGuide.

Photo: Hugo Magalhaes / Pexels

Where to Go Next from Annecy

Thanks to its location, Annecy is a perfect starting point for exploring the wider region. If you have a car available or aren’t afraid to use France’s reliable trains, a huge range of options opens up for further adventures.

 If, after the idyllic lake, you’re seized by a craving for a bustling big city with perfect gastronomy, hop on a train to Lyon. The journey takes about two hours and you’ll find yourself in the culinary heart of France, full of secret passageways and historic taverns.

 Are you tempted by real giant mountains and rugged alpine wilderness? Then you have to head east to Chamonix and Mont Blanc. In under an hour and a half by car you’ll arrive right beneath the highest mountain in Europe, where you can take a cable car up to almost 4,000 metres above sea level.

 Another interesting stop is nearby Geneva in Switzerland. The bus journey takes just an hour and you can stroll past the famous Jet d’Eau fountain or visit the UN headquarters. Just bear in mind that Swiss prices are even a notch higher than in France.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best way to get to Annecy from Geneva Airport?

Geneva Airport (GVA) is by far the most convenient option for getting to Annecy. Regular bus lines (such as Flixbus or the regional line 272) depart directly from the terminal and will get you to the center of Annecy in about 50 minutes. The ticket usually costs around €10 to €15, depending on how far in advance you buy it.

Can I manage a city visit without a car?

Absolutely no problem! Annecy is very compact and the entire historic center is basically one big pedestrian zone. You can walk to the lake, the beaches, and the train station. For more distant trips along the lake, you can easily rent a bike, and local buses run reliably to the surrounding villages or the Gorges du Fier canyon. If you do decide to rent a car, remember the highway tolls, which cost approximately €9.50 per 100 kilometers.

Are prices high in Annecy?

Yes, you should be prepared for the fact that Annecy is one of the more expensive and exclusive destinations in France. In 2026, expect a main course in a restaurant to cost you 20 to 30 euros, an espresso 2.50 euros, and a simple baguette at the bakery just over 1 euro. Accommodation during high season you’ll hardly find for under 120 euros per night.

Can you swim safely in the lake?

Sure, swimming in Lac d’Annecy is one of the main reasons why people come here. The water is incredibly clear and during the summer months has a very pleasant temperature of around 23 °C. Public beaches like Albigny also have lifeguard services during the season and safe, gently sloping shores.

How many days should I set aside for a visit?

To truly enjoy the city’s atmosphere without unnecessary rush, I recommend setting aside at least two to three days for Annecy. You’ll spend one day exploring the old town and castle, on the second day you can rent a bike and cycle around the lake or go for a swim, and on the third day you can head out for a hike or take a boat cruise.

How is it with the language barrier, do locals speak English?

In the tourist center, hotels and larger restaurants you’ll get by with English without major problems. Nevertheless, it’s polite and absolutely essential for survival in France to start every conversation with a greeting “Bonjour” (Hello/Good day) before you even switch to English. This small detail will immediately guarantee you a much more welcoming approach.

Can you normally drink tap water?

Yes, tap water (eau du robinet) in Annecy is not only completely safe to drink, but it’s actually excellent. It’s quality mountain water that you can confidently fill into bottles. In restaurants, it’s also common practice to ask for “une carafe d’eau” (a carafe of tap water), which they’ll bring to your table for free.

Discover the Venice of the Alps with us — from the turquoise lake and medieval canals to amazing alpine cheeses and secret viewpoints.

Planning a trip to Annecy, France?
