A few numbers have shifted since then, though, so you have a realistic picture when planning for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>New per-kilometre tax.<\/strong> From January 2026 you pay a tax for every kilometre driven (roughly \u20ac0.05 per km), which most rental companies add to your hire \u2014 for a lap of the island budget around \u20ac70\u2013120 extra. The good news: petrol got cheaper at the same time (around 305 ISK\/l in summer 2026), so what you pay for the car and fuel works out about the same.<\/li><li><strong>Flights.<\/strong> The budget airline PLAY went bust in autumn 2025. The main carrier is once again Icelandair; in season you can fly direct from the UK, while off-season expect a connection.<\/li><li><strong>Prices overall.<\/strong> Accommodation and food have gone up since then. Our trick still holds, though: <strong>travel in as large a group as possible and cook for yourself<\/strong> \u2014 car and accommodation costs get split, and you&#8217;ll save the most in the supermarket (B\u00f3nus is the cheapest).<\/li><li><strong>Paying.<\/strong> Iceland is practically cashless these days \u2014 you can pay by card absolutely everywhere. Just carry a physical card and PIN for self-service petrol pumps and parking machines.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Temperatures_to_Expect\"><\/span>What Temperatures to Expect<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Right at the airport in Reykjav\u00edk I picked up a newspaper with a huge headline: <b>&#8220;thank god summer&#8217;s over.&#8221;<\/b> I half laughed, half panicked, and pulled a hat onto my head. But once I read the article properly, I realised it was just sarcasm. <b>The Icelander had written that he was glad winter had arrived, because there had been no summer to speak of.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/island-typicke-pocasi-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Typical weather in Iceland\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" title=\"\"><figcaption>The glaciers may be melting, but they&#8217;re still there \u2014 so it&#8217;s still cold in Iceland!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You might be surprised to learn that Iceland sees <b>no extreme temperatures in winter<\/b>, thanks to the warm Gulf Stream. Average temperatures range from -10\u00b0C to 0\u00b0C depending on whether you&#8217;re in the Lowlands or the Highlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In October the thermometer showed a low of just -1\u00b0C, yet it still felt bitterly cold. Why? <b>It doesn&#8217;t matter what the thermometer reads \u2014 Iceland is battered all year round by such an insane, freezing wind that it can feel like -30\u00b0C.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Clothes_to_Bring\"><\/span>What Clothes to Bring<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Don&#8217;t even think about leaving your winter jacket at home. With <strong><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Nepremokav\u00e9 nohavice\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/nepromokave-kalhoty\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">waterproof clothing<\/a><\/strong> you can&#8217;t go wrong in Iceland. <strong>Money invested<\/strong> in <b>a proper rain jacket, waterproof trousers and shoes will literally warm your heart in Iceland.<\/b> Forget the umbrella \u2014 there&#8217;s a reason you won&#8217;t see them in any shop in Iceland. Yes, you guessed it: the wind. Hats and gloves will be your best friends.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Island-jake-obleceni-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"What clothes to pack for Iceland\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" title=\"\"><figcaption>Swimwear and a woolly hat are both essentials in Iceland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Everyone will tell you to layer up. Instead of one thick, warm garment, <b>go for several layers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moira.cz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thermal clothing<\/a>.<\/b> Again, you won&#8217;t regret it. And don&#8217;t forget your swimwear, because Iceland is a land of hot springs \u2014 and it would be a real shame not to slip into at least one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"To_Camp_or_Not_to_Camp\"><\/span>To Camp or Not to Camp<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yes, there are people who camp in Iceland in October and November. <b>But without the right gear, they talk of sleepless nights in unbelievable cold and sleeping in heated toilet blocks.<\/b> If you&#8217;re travelling by car as a pair, sleeping in the car is one option \u2014 you&#8217;ll be cold, but you&#8217;ll survive a week that way. I wouldn&#8217;t push it for longer. I&#8217;d only really reach for a tent with good equipment and experience of camping in winter and extreme conditions. <b>And don&#8217;t bring a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of -10\u00b0C, because it simply won&#8217;t be enough. For <b>four people over 14 days it cost us \u20ac1,911<\/b>, which works out to roughly <b>\u20ac480 per person<\/b>. You&#8217;ll sleep in cabins, budget hotels or hostels. There&#8217;s no need to fear Iceland&#8217;s hostels \u2014 most of them were genuinely lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52991\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/chatka-na-Islandu-2048x1365.jpg\" alt=\"Accommodation in Iceland\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" title=\"\"><figcaption>You can have a cabin like this in the middle of nowhere for \u20ac100 a night.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Pack_a_Packed_Lunch_Even_If_Youre_Not_Trying_to_Save\"><\/span>Why Pack a Packed Lunch, Even If You&#8217;re Not Trying to Save<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Iceland, eating in restaurants is <b>at least three times more expensive than back home.<\/b> If that doesn&#8217;t bother you, just keep a decent stock of food in the car anyway. <strong>Restaurants<\/strong> <b>are definitely not on every corner<\/b> (or even every other one), and in winter the less touristy spots \u2014 which is most of Iceland \u2014 are closed (yes, winter starts on 1 October).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Much_Groceries_Cost_in_the_Supermarket\"><\/span>How Much Groceries Cost in the Supermarket<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you cook and make your own packed lunches, you can save quite a lot on food. There&#8217;s no point bringing too much from home. Supermarkets have very similar prices to those in the UK; only fresh produce is noticeably pricier, and you can&#8217;t pack that in a suitcase anyway. The cheapest chain by far is B\u00f3nus \u2014 look out for its pink piggy logo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We ate out only once \u2014 it cost \u20ac48 for the four of us \u2014 and the rest of the time we cooked and prepared snacks, so our total food bill came to just \u20ac265. <b>That&#8217;s \u20ac66 per person (over 14 days), or \u20ac4.74 per person per day!<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Did_We_Cook\"><\/span>What Did We Cook?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We made <b>Mexican tacos with avocado, lentil soup, chickpeas with peppers, and also classic pasta with pesto or tomato sauce<\/b>. For breakfast we had bread with hummus or jam, yoghurt with muesli, or we&#8217;d make eggs and pancakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_Most_Expensive_Part_of_Iceland\"><\/span>What&#8217;s the Most Expensive Part of Iceland<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Petrol and car hire. <b>Definitely get a 4&#215;4 in Iceland, especially if you&#8217;re not coming in summer and want to go anywhere beyond the main Ring Road.<\/b> Yes, you&#8217;ll hear about people getting around in a small car, but trust us \u2014 some roads are about the same quality as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/uganda-road-trip-camping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the ones in Uganda<\/a><\/strong>, and it&#8217;s not worth the risk. Renting a Suzuki Grand Vitara XL cost us \u20ac620.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52987\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/island-pujceni-auta-suzuki.jpg\" alt=\"Car hire in Iceland \u2014 Suzuki Grand Vitara\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" title=\"\"><figcaption>Car hire in Iceland \u2014 Suzuki Grand Vitara<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Petrol in Iceland costs <b>\u20ac1.70\u20131.80 per litre<\/b>, and if you want to drive around the island, count on about 3,500 km. We looked at the budget of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gabiinwanderland.com\/single-post\/Kolik-stoji-roadtrip-po-islandu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gabiinwanderland<\/a><\/strong>, who went as a couple for 9 days (mostly camping) and Iceland set them back \u20ac1,240!
