Admission starts from around 5 \u20ac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The castle that gave <strong>Ka\u0161persk\u00e9 Hory<\/strong> its name is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the Czech Republic. It was built by <strong>master builder V\u00edt Hedv\u00e1bn\u00fd<\/strong> and named Karlsberg (Ka\u0161perk) in honour of <strong>Charles IV<\/strong>, who commissioned it as a watchtower castle. Its purpose was to guard not only the town but, more importantly, its mines, gold-panning sites, and ore mills \u2014 as well as the famous <strong>Golden Trail<\/strong> (Zlat\u00e1 stezka) trade route between Ka\u0161persk\u00e9 Hory and Bavaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the castle, you&#8217;ll be rewarded with magnificent views over the surrounding forests and hills of \u0160umava \u2014 absolutely worth the climb. The castle currently offers <strong>several guided tour circuits<\/strong>, which we&#8217;ll outline below. If you have younger children, we&#8217;d recommend the third option \u2014 they&#8217;ll love it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tour: Life at the Castle:<\/strong> This 60-minute tour lets you explore the castle interior and learn about its history and what daily life was like within its walls. The tour includes the burgrave&#8217;s quarters, the ruins of the castle palace, and the eastern tower. At the end, you can watch a unique video projection about life in a medieval castle. Admission is around 6.50 \u20ac for adults and 5 \u20ac for students and seniors. Family tickets cost approximately 19 \u20ac.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Tour: Transformations of the Castle:<\/strong> This 55-minute tour focuses on how the castle has changed throughout its existence. You&#8217;ll see the ground floor of the burgrave&#8217;s quarters, the castle bailey, the ground floor of the eastern tower, and the ruined palace. Admission is the same \u2014 around 6.50 \u20ac for adults and 5 \u20ac for students and seniors. Kids complete tasks during the tour that help them &#8220;free&#8221; an enchanted character, picking up loads of fascinating facts along the way. Tours run every Wednesday and Thursday at 11:00 and 14:00 during the summer season. After all, the lake sits in the heart of deep forests that are themselves full of secrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 <em>One of the most famous stories dates back to 1964. In August of that year, the Czechoslovak State Security allegedly retrieved crates from the lake bed that supposedly contained a &#8220;Nazi archive&#8221; and lists of previously unpublished names of Nazi informants. The entire operation was filmed by Czechoslovak Television, which turned it into a successful documentary. However, because the planned shipment of documents from the KGB archives was delayed, the crates planted on the lake bed actually contained nothing but worthless paper. After World War II, the lake fell within the border zone, and a guard station was built here for the border patrol. The route is 4 km long but <strong>ranks among the more challenging ones<\/strong>, so it&#8217;s best suited for those with a reasonable level of fitness \u2014 and it&#8217;s definitely not suitable for families with pushchairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hike begins at the car park near Idina Pila, 2 km from the village of Z\u00e1to\u0148. Park up here and set off. The first section follows along Kaplick\u00fd Stream and passes beneath a railway viaduct until you reach the <strong>Idina Pila Information Centre<\/strong>. Here you can read up on the Boub\u00edn Primeval Forest and surrounding area to prepare yourself for what lies ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, the path continues to Boub\u00edn Lake, the first stop on the educational trail. The lake sits at an altitude of 920 metres and is surrounded by primeval forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you decide to press on further, be prepared for a tougher stretch. The trail winds through the primeval forest and isn&#8217;t heavily maintained for tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are the highlights along the route:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Boub\u00edn Primeval Forest:<\/strong> This is the second-oldest preserved primeval forest in Bohemia. The views over the surrounding \u0160umava landscape \u2014 thick forests, green meadows, and shimmering blue lakes \u2014 are truly awe-inspiring. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the <strong>Bavarian Forest<\/strong>, part of the nature park across the border in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If you&#8217;re after a slightly more mysterious vantage point, legend has it that the finest views belong to \u0160ibeni\u010dn\u00ed vrch (Gallows Hill) just outside town, where a pillory dating from 1630 was relocated in the 19th century \u2014 having previously stood right on the main square as a place of public shame.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linger a while at the summit and savour the beauty that nature has laid out before you.
