reader makes a purchase or signs up with a partner company).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You&#8217;ve certainly come across websites packed with reviews and ratings for all sorts of apps, gadgets, bank accounts\u2026 they all earn their money through affiliate marketing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Affiliate_Marketing_Works\"><\/span>How Affiliate Marketing Works<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s straightforward: you place a link on your website that leads to, say, an online shop.<\/strong> If your reader clicks through and makes a purchase (having arrived via your link), <strong>you earn a commission<\/strong>. These typically range from <strong>around 3% to 30%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your niche, there are plenty of companies that manufacture or offer something relevant to your topic. <strong>We&#8217;ll break it down using the travel niche<\/strong>, which is what we know best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you write about travel, obvious affiliate marketing examples include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insurance companies offering travel insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online shops selling travel gear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accommodation booking websites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apps for currency exchange and payments abroad<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Language learning apps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In each of these categories, you&#8217;ll find at least five companies that would be happy to offer you a commission for recommending their products. <strong>But how do you actually find them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_and_Choosing_an_Affiliate_Program\"><\/span><strong>Finding and Choosing an Affiliate Program<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Before we go any further, here&#8217;s a quick glossary of affiliate marketing jargon that pops up across the industry \u2014 and that we&#8217;ll be using throughout this guide:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Advertiser<\/strong><\/em><em> = a company looking for partners to promote its services<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Programme<\/strong><\/em><em> = a specific offer from an advertiser<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Publisher<\/strong><\/em><em> = the person doing the promoting, e.g. a blog owner \u2014 <\/em><em><strong>that&#8217;s you<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Affiliate partner = Publisher = you and us<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two ways to connect with an advertiser. <strong>Either directly<\/strong> (a direct partnership), <strong>or through an affiliate network<\/strong> (an indirect partnership).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Direct_Partnerships\"><\/span><strong>Direct Partnerships<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you arrange a deal directly with an advertiser, they&#8217;ll typically register you in their own system (such as their proprietary affiliate platform), from which you&#8217;ll receive your tracking links. <strong>The advantage is sometimes higher commissions<\/strong> and a closer working relationship, while <strong>the downside is payout thresholds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>It&#8217;s not uncommon for advertisers to set minimum payout thresholds as high as \u20ac200. That means you won&#8217;t receive any payment until your accumulated commissions hit that mark. And when you&#8217;re just starting out, reaching that threshold can take several months.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Partnerships_Through_an_Affiliate_Network\"><\/span><strong>Partnerships Through an Affiliate Network<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Affiliate networks are platforms that specialise in connecting advertisers with publishers. <strong>The downside<\/strong> can be <strong>tougher entry requirements<\/strong> for publishers and <strong>slightly lower commissions<\/strong> (the network takes a cut from the advertiser, and the advertiser often passes that cost on to the publisher).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The big advantage, however, is a shared payout threshold.<\/strong> If you sign up with five different advertisers through a single affiliate network, you&#8217;ll reach the minimum payout much faster and get paid more frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Find_the_Right_Affiliate_Programme\"><\/span><strong>How to Find the Right Affiliate Programme<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When going direct, you usually already know what you want to promote.<\/strong> If you&#8217;re planning to promote accommodation listings on <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Booking.com\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/booking-com\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\"><strong>Booking.com<\/strong><\/a>, a quick Google search will reveal that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/affiliate-program\/v2\/index.html?auth_success=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Booking has its own affiliate programme<\/strong><\/a>. And if Google doesn&#8217;t give you the answer, the best bet is simply to contact their support team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c10.patreonusercontent.com\/4\/patreon-media\/p\/post\/82339373\/968241822b3847608f514b02e4fd6270\/eyJ3Ijo4MjB9\/1.png?token-time=1697328000&amp;token-hash=Ywz40w5YPYQJtoHcvR6oRPTq6-lhkuMHGlK90qhMJEs%3D\" alt=\"Booking.com affiliate programme sign-up page\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On closer inspection, you&#8217;ll find that Booking is also registered with several affiliate networks \u2014 but the best terms are available directly.<\/strong> Affiliate networks typically offer around 4% of each booking made through your link, whereas Booking itself is willing to share 20\u201340% of its own commission from each property. In practice, that often works out to significantly more than a flat 4% of the total booking value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the UK, many companies run their own affiliate programmes through platforms like <strong>Awin<\/strong>, <strong>Partnerize<\/strong>, or <strong>Impact<\/strong>. Each platform usually displays a contact person right on the dashboard \u2014 so you simply reach out to them to get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c10.patreonusercontent.com\/4\/patreon-media\/p\/post\/82339373\/35e9e0a3eab94085b5da5575da16285f\/eyJ3Ijo4MjB9\/1.png?token-time=1697328000&amp;token-hash=p7WRVhPbYzI4qijnVcZ11MNUt5uEXQuV-OsJgTfV-gY%3D\" alt=\"Example of an affiliate programme contact page\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you don&#8217;t have a clear idea of which programme you&#8217;re looking for<\/strong> (maybe you just want an online shop that sells travel products), <strong>or<\/strong> the company you had in mind <strong>doesn&#8217;t run its own affiliate programme<\/strong>, there&#8217;s a good chance that <strong>an affiliate network manages it on their behalf<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several major affiliate networks operate in the UK and internationally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Awin<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 one of the largest networks globally, with thousands of programmes from major brands and retailers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareasale.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ShareASale<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 now part of Awin, popular with bloggers, huge catalogue of programmes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cj.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CJ Affiliate (Commission Junction)<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 one of the biggest international networks with a massive range of programmes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/associates\/join\/landing\/main.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Amazon Associates<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Amazon&#8217;s own affiliate marketing programme, great for product-based content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/impact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Impact<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 growing network with premium brands and excellent reporting tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.partnerize.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Partnerize<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 focused on enterprise-level brands, strong in travel and finance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Every network has a catalogue of campaigns on its website.<\/strong> Browse through them to find what suits you best. And remember \u2014 nobody&#8217;s stopping you from signing up with multiple networks at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Personally, we don&#8217;t choose a network based solely on what it offers, but mainly on how it treats its publishers.<\/strong> For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/cj.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CJ Affiliate<\/a> is somewhat notorious for sudden changes in programmes (such as commission cuts) without giving publishers fair warning. On items costing hundreds of pounds, that&#8217;s a massive difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Networks want you to be able to make informed choices, so they provide useful statistics to help with your decision-making:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c10.patreonusercontent.com\/4\/patreon-media\/p\/post\/82339373\/47893960240143349e37991ea71152b9\/eyJ3Ijo4MjB9\/1.png?token-time=1697328000&amp;token-hash=IwQEyvOkp4twN1hlHlCUUUoA1W3FWAaI3aw51jdkjb0%3D\" alt=\"Affiliate programme statistics and approval rates\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For instance, the &#8220;approval rate&#8221; statistic tells you what percentage of conversions the advertiser typically approves.<\/strong> In the example above, the rate is just 53%. That means roughly half of all conversions get rejected for various reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conversion rejection is frustrating, but it&#8217;s justifiable<\/strong> \u2014 and the rate varies significantly depending on the type of product or service. It tends to be much higher for clothing or for services that need to be consumed. For example, with <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Booking.com\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/booking-com-2\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Booking.com<\/a>, a reservation counts as a conversion, but you only get paid once the guest actually shows up and pays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That said, don&#8217;t overthink your choices.
