We couldn&#8217;t find a single other person \u2014 in our home country or anywhere in Europe \u2014 mad enough to head south on these heavy beasts (an e-bike weighs roughly 25 kg without any luggage). <strong>It was one of the most fascinating months of our lives, a genuine adventure \u2014 but one we&#8217;ll never repeat. In other words, on departure day.<\/strong> I couldn&#8217;t even get going until my third or fourth attempt, and for the first two weeks I was falling off regularly like a sack of potatoes (Luk\u00e1\u0161 fell less often, but he wasn&#8217;t immune either). <strong>Fully loaded, each bike weighed around 50\u201360 kg \u2014 absolute beasts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On social media, we happily blamed all our troubles on our two &#8220;beauties.&#8221; But I&#8217;ll confess now \u2014 it was our own fault for never riding them beforehand. How do I know? By the end of the trip, we were cruising along like we owned the road!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Charging_was_never_a_problem\"><\/span>Charging was never a problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Riding e-bikes genuinely made things easier, and I&#8217;d wholeheartedly recommend them.<\/strong> Ours could manage 70\u2013190 km on a single charge depending on the terrain (190 km being completely flat), and <strong>people will let you charge the batteries everywhere.<\/strong> You just have to ask. We once even charged up in a greengrocer&#8217;s shop. Just promise me that when you first bring yours home, you won&#8217;t ride them straight to Greece, alright?<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Working_while_cycling_isnt_impossible_but_its_like_working_with_stomach_flu\"><\/span>2) Working while cycling isn&#8217;t impossible, but it&#8217;s like working with stomach flu<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52908\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52908\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Prace-na-Korfu.jpg\" alt=\"Halfway through the trip, we had to take a 3-day break for non-stop work\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Halfway through the trip, we had to take a 3-day break for non-stop work<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Luk\u00e1\u0161 and I both work online.<\/strong> Thanks to that, I&#8217;ve got a whole collection of stories about incredibly unusual places I&#8217;ve worked from. <strong>When something&#8217;s urgent, I can sit down on the ground, switch on mobile data, and work \u2014 even in a toilet if I have to.<\/strong> I&#8217;ve worked in Uganda at 2,500 metres above sea level and next to bins in an alleyway leading to Prague Castle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We also worked during our 3-month road trip across America, <strong>so we didn&#8217;t expect it to be a problem on bikes.<\/strong> And guess what? It was. A massive one.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52911\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52911\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52911\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DSCF2743.jpg\" alt=\"A quick look around and back on the road\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A quick look around and back on the road<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>I honestly don&#8217;t know what was worse.<\/strong> Being exhausted from pedalling all day, or not being able to just pop down the road for Wi-Fi when the campsite connection wasn&#8217;t working (on a bike, even 10 km is a real detour \u2014 especially when you&#8217;ve already done over 100). On top of that (and this should have been obvious), you can&#8217;t do anything while cycling. Normally on road trips, I get half my work done in the car. Here, I had to wait until we stopped somewhere.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_worse_%E2%80%94_the_heat_or_the_exhaustion\"><\/span>What&#8217;s worse \u2014 the heat or the exhaustion?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A typical day looked like this: we&#8217;d get up between six and seven, frantically pack the tent, and fifteen minutes later we&#8217;d be half-asleep, hammering away at the pedals. We&#8217;d stop at a supermarket for a yoghurt drink instead of a proper breakfast, just to save time. <strong>From <a href=\"http:\/\/reportermagazin.cz\/a\/i75sr\/na-elektrokolech-do-recka-co-vsechno-se-muze-pokazit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Central Europe all the way to Greece<\/a>, temperatures never dropped below 35\u00b0C.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52907\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52907\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52907\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DSCF2127.jpg\" alt=\"We were battling the heat on our bikes right from the start\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52907\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We were battling the heat on our bikes right from the start<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At midday, we&#8217;d stop for an hour or two for lunch, then carry on until the evening (with plenty of stops for cold drinks, of course). <strong>We&#8217;d arrive at a campsite between six and eight, have a quick wash, cook dinner, then hunt for Wi-Fi and work until midnight.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/reportermagazin.cz\/a\/ifMNR\/na-kole-do-recka-tam-nemuzete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We often couldn&#8217;t start working until half past nine<\/a>, and I probably don&#8217;t need to describe how shattered we were (we definitely didn&#8217;t need any sleeping pills).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The internet wasn&#8217;t always fast, and sometimes it didn&#8217;t work at all. It was far from idyllic. <strong>Exhaustion, too little time, and constant stress \u2014 I felt like I was working through a bout of stomach flu. In fact, this might have been even harder.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_You_have_to_kiss_your_freedom_goodbye\"><\/span>3) You have to kiss your freedom goodbye<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We knew we&#8217;d have to skip a lot of places, but we ended up skipping far more than expected. Basically everything that wasn&#8217;t directly on our route. <strong>I know travel isn&#8217;t about seeing everything. But this robbed us of hiking in the mountains (stunning mountains \u2014 and if you know us, you know how much we love trekking).<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52909\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52909\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52909\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Passo-de-Giau.jpg\" alt=\"We could only look at the mountains\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52909\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We could only look at the mountains<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The idea of leaving fully loaded e-bikes \u2014 carrying everything we owned \u2014 unattended somewhere was simply out of the question. I mourned so many hikes, the Greek Meteora, and Mostar. Places I&#8217;d been looking forward to that turned out to be impossible to reach on an e-bike. <strong>Where&#8217;s that legendary freedom you&#8217;re supposed to feel when travelling by bicycle?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_You_never_properly_see_anything\"><\/span>4) You never properly see anything<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You&#8217;d think six weeks would be plenty of time for a trip across Europe. <strong>But even so, you barely manage to see anything.<\/strong> Spending a few hours somewhere means you hardly make any progress. <a href=\"http:\/\/reportermagazin.cz\/a\/i75sr\/na-elektrokolech-do-recka-co-vsechno-se-muze-pokazit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At the beginning, we tried to enjoy it<\/a> \u2014 we swam in Lake Bled and explored little towns. <strong>That didn&#8217;t last long. Not once we realised how far behind schedule we were. Plus, there are loads of places you simply can&#8217;t reach on a bike.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_The_weather_is_your_worst_enemy\"><\/span>5) The weather is your worst enemy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Yes, it was a pretty foolish idea to ride to <a href=\"http:\/\/reportermagazin.cz\/a\/wc5Vk\/do-chorvatska-na-kole-uz-nikdy-vlastne-ani-bez-nej\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greece in the peak of summer heat<\/a>. But we eventually got used to the 40\u00b0C temperatures.<\/strong> We learned to dodge the worst of it by getting up early and waiting out the midday sun in caf\u00e9s and restaurants.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52910\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52910\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Zmokli-jsme-v-Dolomitech.jpg\" alt=\"It was either boiling hot, or this\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It was either boiling hot, or this<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The real nightmare came when we hit torrential rain and freezing cold in the <a href=\"http:\/\/reportermagazin.cz\/a\/iutKm\/zeleny-ostrov-korfu-je-plny-tlejicich-odpadku\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dolomites<\/a>.<\/strong> It poured relentlessly all day and all night, and we&#8217;d never felt so helpless. We were soaked to the bone, the tent was soaked, the sleeping bags were soaked. Our entire life was soaked! And in that scorching heat, we frequently ended up in restaurants and caf\u00e9s. If you&#8217;re sitting comfortably indoors right now, you might think we&#8217;re soft \u2014 but try cycling eight hours a day in 40\u00b0C heat. You&#8217;ll stop counting the pennies pretty quickly. <strong>So how much did it all cost?
