Budget airlines like Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet operate regular flights from London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and other UK cities to Krak\u00f3w, Warsaw, and Gda\u0144sk. Return flights can often be found for under \u00a350 if you book early. You can fly into Krak\u00f3w and out of Gda\u0144sk (or vice versa) for a convenient one-way trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Renting a car<\/strong> \u2014 once you arrive at Krak\u00f3w or Warsaw airport, you can pick up a rental car right at the terminal. We&#8217;ve had consistently great experiences with <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"RentalCars.com\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/rentalcars-com\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">RentalCars<\/a>, which we use all over the world. Car hire in Poland is great value \u2014 you can get a small car from around \u20ac30\u2013\u20ac50 per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuel<\/strong> costs around 6.2\u20136.8 PLN per litre in 2025 (roughly \u20ac1.45\u2013\u20ac1.60), so for the entire 1,300 km road trip, budget around \u20ac120\u2013\u20ac160 for fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Motorways<\/strong> in Poland are largely free for passenger cars. The A4 section between Katowice and Krak\u00f3w is tolled (around 30 PLN \/ \u20ac7), and there are a few other short tolled sections on the A2. You can sit in the enormous main square with a coffee in hand, gaze at St. Mary&#8217;s Basilica, and feel like you&#8217;ve stepped into a fairy tale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start your day at <strong>Rynek G\u0142\u00f3wny<\/strong> \u2014 the main square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. In the centre stands the <strong>Cloth Hall<\/strong> (Sukiennice), where you can browse stalls selling traditional souvenirs. Beneath the Cloth Hall there&#8217;s also an underground museum well worth a visit \u2014 an interactive exhibition about medieval Krak\u00f3w where you walk below street level. Buy tickets online to avoid queues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, head to <strong>Wawel<\/strong> \u2014 the royal castle perched on a hill above the Vistula river. Wawel is to Poles what Windsor Castle is to the British, only (in my humble opinion) considerably more atmospheric. Explore the cathedral, the royal chambers, and especially the gardens with views over the river. You can easily spend 2\u20133 hours at Wawel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After lunch, wander through the <strong>Jewish quarter of Kazimierz<\/strong>. This is where Krak\u00f3w reveals its other face \u2014 street art, hipster caf\u00e9s, vintage shops, and layers of history. Visit the <strong>Old Synagogue<\/strong> and stroll along Szeroka Street. If you&#8217;ve seen Schindler&#8217;s List, you&#8217;ll get goosebumps here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the evening, treat yourself to a walk along the <strong>Vistula riverbank<\/strong> \u2014 especially at sunset, it&#8217;s absolutely gorgeous. An underground wonder in the morning, a place that cuts you to the bone in the afternoon. But logistically it makes sense, and both of these excursions from Krak\u00f3w are absolute musts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Morning_Wieliczka_Salt_Mine\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Morning_Wieliczka_Salt_Mine\"><\/span>Morning: Wieliczka Salt Mine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wieliczka<\/strong> is just a 15-minute drive from Krak\u00f3w, and the salt mine is one of the most visited attractions in all of Poland. And rightly so \u2014 it&#8217;s absolutely fascinating. You descend 135 metres underground and walk through corridors, chapels, and caverns that miners carved out of the rock salt over centuries. The highlight is the <strong>Chapel of St. Kinga<\/strong> \u2014 a huge underground hall with chandeliers made of salt, sculptures made of salt, floors made of salt\u2026 everything salt. \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tour lasts about 2.5\u20133 hours and covers roughly 3.5 km of tunnels. The temperature underground is a constant 14 \u00b0C, so bring a jumper even if it&#8217;s boiling outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 <strong>TIP:<\/strong> Buy your tickets <strong>exclusively online and well in advance<\/strong> \u2014 at least a week, in peak season preferably a month. The queues on-site are horrendous and tour capacity is limited. Visiting <strong>Auschwitz-Birkenau<\/strong> is something you simply cannot prepare for. You can read hundreds of articles and books, but until you stand there, you have no idea. We both walked out in complete silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Touring both camps (Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau) takes 3\u20134 hours. I&#8217;d strongly recommend getting a guide \u2014 it adds enormous context. Guided tours in English must be <strong>booked in advance on the official website<\/strong>. Imagine an alpine village nestled among soaring mountains, where someone on every corner is offering you smoked cheese (oscypek), folk music fills the air, and you can hike up to a breathtaking mountain ridge in just a few hours. The trail to this mountain lake is about 9 km one way, but it&#8217;s easy-going and doable for anyone. The lake itself is breathtaking. Allow 5\u20136 hours round trip. Set off early (ideally 7:00 AM) to beat the crowds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Giewont<\/strong> \u2014 a tougher climb to the iconic peak with its summit cross (1,894 m). Gorgeous views, but with some exposed sections and chains. For experienced hikers only.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dolina Ko\u015bcieliska<\/strong> \u2014 a quieter valley with caves, ideal if you want nature without the crowds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 <strong>TIP:<\/strong> Head to Morskie Oko <strong>on a weekday<\/strong>. At weekends it&#8217;s literally a queue of people. Buy some <strong>oscypek<\/strong> (smoked sheep&#8217;s cheese) straight from the highland folk, grab a hot chocolate, and soak up the atmosphere. You&#8217;ll also find plenty of restaurants along Krup\u00f3wki serving traditional G\u00f3ral cuisine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have time left, take the <strong>cable car up to Guba\u0142\u00f3wka<\/strong> \u2014 the panoramic views of the Tatras from up there are fantastic, especially on a clear day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_eat_in_Zakopane\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_eat_in_Zakopane\"><\/span>Where to eat in Zakopane<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Karczma Stek Cha\u0142upa<\/strong> \u2014 G\u00f3ral cuisine in an authentic setting with enormous portions. The kwa\u015bnica (sauerkraut soup) here is excellent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gazdowo Kuznia<\/strong> \u2014 grilled oscypek, sausages, everything cooked over an open flame. That might sound like a lot, but the route passes through beautiful Polish countryside, and you can break it up with a stop along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stop_along_the_way_Czestochowa_optional\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stop_along_the_way_Czestochowa_optional\"><\/span>Stop along the way: Cz\u0119stochowa (optional)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested in Poland&#8217;s spiritual side, stop in <strong>Cz\u0119stochowa<\/strong> \u2014 it lies roughly halfway along the route. The <strong>Jasna G\u00f3ra<\/strong> monastery, home to the famous painting of the Black Madonna, is the most important pilgrimage site in Poland. Even if you&#8217;re not religious, the atmosphere of this place is deeply impressive. A visit takes about an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Afternoonevening_Wroclaw_%E2%80%94_city_of_gnomes\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Afternoon_evening_Wroclaw_city_of_gnomes\"><\/span>Afternoon\/evening: Wroc\u0142aw \u2014 city of gnomes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll arrive in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/wroclaw-poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"89492\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wroc\u0142aw<\/a><\/strong> in the afternoon, and the city will draw you in immediately. The <strong>Rynek<\/strong> (main square) is colourful, lively, and enormous. Take a stroll, sit on a caf\u00e9 terrace, and watch the world go by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then get stuck into <strong>gnome hunting<\/strong>! Yes, Wroc\u0142aw is famous for hundreds of tiny bronze gnomes (krasnale) scattered throughout the city. They were originally created as a symbol of an opposition movement and there are now over 300 of them. We found about twenty in a single evening, and it was brilliant fun \u2014 Luk\u00e1\u0161 became borderline obsessed. \ud83d\ude05 There&#8217;s even a gnome map you can download to your phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the evening, wander over to <strong>Ostr\u00f3w Tumski<\/strong> \u2014 the cathedral island, which is beautifully illuminated after dark. Come hungry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_stay_in_Wroclaw\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_stay_in_Wroclaw\"><\/span>Where to stay in Wroc\u0142aw<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay in the centre \u2014 Wroc\u0142aw is a compact city and you can walk everywhere from the old town. For affordable yet clean and stylish accommodation, we recommend <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pl\/legnicka-business-apartments.html?aid=2397601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Legnicka Business Apartments<\/a><\/strong>. Warsaw \u2014 the capital that rose from the ashes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From Wroc\u0142aw to Warsaw it&#8217;s about 3.5 hours on the motorway. Leave in the morning so you have the whole afternoon and evening for Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warsaw is a city that many people underestimate. &#8220;Why would I go to Warsaw when Krak\u00f3w is prettier?&#8221; is something we hear a lot. But Warsaw has something no other Polish city can match \u2014 a story of incredible resilience. The city was 85% destroyed during World War II, and the entire historic centre was painstakingly reconstructed. If you&#8217;re a Chopin fan, look out for the <strong>Chopin benches<\/strong> \u2014 interactive benches dotted around the city that play his compositions at the push of a button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the afternoon, visit the <strong>Warsaw Rising Museum<\/strong> \u2014 one of the best museums I&#8217;ve ever been to. Interactive, emotionally powerful, and brilliantly put together. Allow at least 2 hours. Leave early in the morning and stop at <strong>Malbork<\/strong> along the way \u2014 it sits right on the route and is one of the top highlights of the entire road trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Morning_Malbork_Castle\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Morning_Malbork_Castle\"><\/span>Morning: Malbork Castle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malbork<\/strong> (Marienburg) is the largest Gothic castle in the world. And that&#8217;s no exaggeration \u2014 when you stand in front of it, your jaw genuinely drops. This enormous brick complex was the headquarters of the Teutonic Knights, and its sheer scale is mind-blowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tour of the castle takes 2.5\u20134 hours (depending on how deep you dive in). Wide, sandy, and surprisingly clean. On the bay side the water is calmer and warmer (relatively \u2014 it&#8217;s still the Baltic \ud83d\ude05), while on the open sea side it&#8217;s a paradise for <strong>kitesurfing and windsurfing<\/strong>.
