If you&#8217;re into speciality coffee, stop by <strong>Satan&#8217;s Coffee Corner<\/strong> \u2014 the name is odd, the coffee is phenomenal.<\/p>\n\n<p>Spend the late afternoon at the <strong>Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/strong> \u2014 buy tickets online in advance, at least a week ahead, or you won&#8217;t get in. Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s unfinished basilica is something you simply have to see with your own eyes. Photos don&#8217;t do it justice. On the other side is the <strong>Torre de la Calahorra<\/strong> with a small museum.<\/p>\n\n<p>Lunch: <strong>Mercado Victoria<\/strong> \u2014 a modern food market with tapas stalls where everyone can find something they fancy (perfect for couples who can never agree on a restaurant \ud83d\ude05). Buy tickets online at least a week in advance (\u20ac14). The gardens are vast and gorgeous \u2014 allow at least 2 hours.<\/p>\n\n<p>Right next door is the <strong>Catedral de Sevilla<\/strong> \u2014 the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the third-largest church of any kind. Climb <strong>La Giralda<\/strong> (a former minaret converted into a bell tower) \u2014 the city views from the top are your reward. Entry \u20ac12, combined with the cathedral.<\/p>\n\n<p>For a late lunch, head to the <strong>Triana<\/strong> neighbourhood \u2014 cross the bridge and immerse yourself in the most authentic part of Seville. <strong>Mercado de Triana<\/strong> has excellent tapas stalls, or sit down at <strong>Casa Cuesta<\/strong> (open since 1880). Just sit on a bench and take it all in.<\/p>\n\n<p>Spend the rest of the morning in the <strong>Santa Cruz<\/strong> neighbourhood \u2014 the former Jewish quarter with lanes so narrow you can barely pass another person. Getting lost here is half the fun. Stop for coffee at <strong>La Cacharrer\u00eda<\/strong> (the locals&#8217; favourite caf\u00e9 in Seville) or have breakfast at <strong>Bar Alfalfa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the afternoon, head to the <strong>Metropol Parasol<\/strong> (Setas de Sevilla) \u2014 a futuristic wooden structure that looks like giant mushrooms. The roof is walkable and offers views across the entire city (\u20ac5 entry, includes a drink). You&#8217;ll either love it or hate it \u2014 architecturally controversial, but the views are superb.<\/p>\n\n<p>The evening is time for <strong>tapeo<\/strong> \u2014 the Sevillian ritual of bar-hopping, having a tapa or two at each place. The journey itself is a highlight.<\/p>\n\n<p>Ronda is a town perched on the edge of the dramatic <strong>El Tajo<\/strong> gorge \u2014 a 100-metre-deep canyon spanned by the iconic stone bridge <strong>Puente Nuevo<\/strong> from the 18th century. It&#8217;s one of the most photographed sights in Spain, and in person it&#8217;s even more spectacular than in pictures.<\/p>\n\n<p>Start at the bridge and walk along both sides of the gorge \u2014 <strong>Mirador de Aldehuela<\/strong> and <strong>Mirador de Ronda<\/strong> offer the two best viewpoints. And here I have to tell you about something genuinely brilliant: <strong>in Granada, you get free tapas with every beer or glass of wine<\/strong>. Yes, free. And not just a bowl of nuts \u2014 proper tapas that change with each round. The more you order, the better the tapas get. This is why Granada is a favourite with students from all over Europe. \ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n\n<p>Head to the streets around <strong>Plaza Nueva<\/strong> and <strong>Calle Navas<\/strong> \u2014 this is where the highest concentration of free-tapas bars is. I recommend <strong>Bodegas Casta\u00f1eda<\/strong> (a classic, seemingly eternal), <strong>Los Diamantes<\/strong> (best fried fish), and <strong>Bar \u00c1vila<\/strong> (huge portions of tapas with every drink).<\/p>\n\n<p>In the afternoon, climb up to the <strong>Albaic\u00edn<\/strong> quarter \u2014 the former Moorish neighbourhood with whitewashed houses, narrow lanes, and the best views of the <strong>Alhambra<\/strong>. The most famous viewpoint is <strong>Mirador de San Nicol\u00e1s<\/strong> \u2014 the view of the Alhambra with the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains behind it is absolutely iconic. The <strong>Nasrid Palaces<\/strong> are the reason people travel here from all over the world \u2014 delicate stucco ornamentation, geometric mosaics, water features\u2026 it&#8217;s simply the finest example of Moorish architecture in existence. Don&#8217;t rush it \u2014 give it the whole morning.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>Generalife gardens<\/strong> are gorgeous \u2014 the summer residence of the Nasrid sultans, with fountains, rose beds, and views over the city. From the <strong>Alcazaba<\/strong> (the oldest part, a military fortress) you get fantastic panoramic views.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the afternoon, head to the <strong>Sacromonte<\/strong> quarter \u2014 the Roma neighbourhood with cave dwellings carved into the hillside, where Romani people have traditionally lived and where Granada&#8217;s flamenco was born. The city is wonderfully vibrant, colourful, and still slightly underrated \u2014 which is part of its charm. Start at the <strong>Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias<\/strong> \u2014 a futuristic complex of buildings by Calatrava that looks like it&#8217;s from another planet. Even if you don&#8217;t go inside (Oceanogr\u00e0fic, science museum), the architecture from outside is staggering.<\/p>\n\n<p>Walk along the bed of the former river \u2014 <strong>Turia Gardens<\/strong> \u2014 a 9 km-long park running through the entire city (the river was rerouted after floods in the 1960s and replaced with a park \u2014 a genius idea).<\/p>\n\n<p>For your farewell dinner, <strong>have paella<\/strong> \u2014 you&#8217;re in Valencia, the birthplace of paella, so it&#8217;s practically obligatory. But a word of warning: authentic Valencian paella is made with chicken, rabbit, and beans \u2014 NOT with seafood (that&#8217;s a different dish). I recommend <strong>La Pepica<\/strong> (a classic since 1898, right on the beach) or <strong>Casa Carmela<\/strong> (paella cooked over a wood fire \u2014 about as authentic as it gets).
