{"id":128440,"date":"2019-07-29T17:10:33","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T15:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/cycling-in-albania-guide\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T10:51:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T09:51:18","slug":"cycling-in-albania-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/cycling-in-albania-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Cycling in Albania: Road Conditions, Safety &#038; What to Expect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we decided to ride our e-bikes from <a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/cestovani\/evropa\/ceska-republika\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"46\"><strong>Central Europe<\/strong><\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/proc-nikdy-na-elektrokolech-do-zahranici\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"52904\"><strong>Greece<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>it was <a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/cestovani\/evropa\/albanie\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"45\">Albania<\/a> that terrified us the most<\/strong>. The information about cycling in Albania and its road conditions was scary, and so were the ideas our friends and family had about the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We imagined bandits lurking around every corner and roads at least as bad as in <a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/cestovani\/afrika\/uganda\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"41\">Uganda<\/a><\/strong>. On top of that, we were riding <a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/dalkova-cyklistika-na-elektrokolech-po-evrope-2018\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"52408\"><strong>e-bikes<\/strong><\/a>, so we worried about finding places to charge. And then there was the internet \u2014 during the entire month and a half we spent riding from Central Europe to Greece and back through <a href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/cestovani\/evropa\/italie\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"16\"><strong>Italy<\/strong><\/a>, we were also working remotely. <strong>So how did it actually turn class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We chose the coastal route from the city of Shkoder all the way down to Sarande. You ride along the main road, so expect heavy traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The road was new in 2018, but as soon as we tried turning off the main route, we were met with endless dirt tracks or very poor roads (which usually ended up as dirt tracks anyway).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Route_Info_Shkoder_%E2%80%93_Durres\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Route_Info_Shkoder_to_Durres\"><\/span>Route Info: Shkoder \u2013 Durres<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Distance:<\/strong> 135 km (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.mapy.cz\/s\/3wHvS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detailed route<\/a><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Terrain:<\/strong> Flat main road<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elevation gain:<\/strong> 351 m<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start: <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Camping Legjenda\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/camping-legjenda\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Camping Legjenda<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Finish: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelmalirobit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hotel Camping Mali i Robit<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_2_Durres_%E2%80%93_Kolonje\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_2_Durres_to_Kolonje\"><\/span>Day 2: Durres \u2013 Kolonje<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This stretch gave us a lot of trouble \u2014 not because of the elevation, as there&#8217;s almost none, but rather because of our own stupidity. <strong>First, we didn&#8217;t want to take any risks and rode on the motorway.<\/strong> Yes, cycling on the motorway isn&#8217;t allowed in Albania either, but the GPS showed no alternative route, and we didn&#8217;t feel like finding our own way through fields in 40\u00b0C heat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-55164\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/albanske-hory-cyklistika.jpg\" alt=\"Goatherd in the Albanian mountains\" class=\"wp-image-55164\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A goatherd in the Albanian mountains<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>From Durres we had planned to ride all the way to Vlore or Fier, but in the end we decided to stop after 72 km in Kolonje at a small hotel. We wanted to rest. It was a mistake. <strong>There was no proper road leading to the hotel, and we spent about 3 hours pushing our bikes through fields in relentless heat.<\/strong> Needless to say, we didn&#8217;t get any rest, and we would have been better off riding all the way to Vlore.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Route_Info_Durres_%E2%80%93_Kolonje\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Route_Info_Durres_to_Kolonje\"><\/span>Route Info: Durres \u2013 Kolonje<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Distance:<\/strong> 135 km (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.mapy.cz\/s\/3wHAL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detailed route<\/a><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Terrain:<\/strong> Flat road, ending with a steep unpaved hill<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elevation gain:<\/strong> 173 m<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelmalirobit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hotel Camping Mali i Robit<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Finish: <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Hotel Nature\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/hotel-nature\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Hotel Nature<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_3_Kolonje_%E2%80%93_Dhermi\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_3_Kolonje_to_Dhermi\"><\/span>Day 3: Kolonje \u2013 Dhermi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From Kolonje we set off towards Dhermi \u2014 <strong>107 km awaited us<\/strong>. We started in high spirits, forgetting that <strong>the most brutal climb of the entire trip<\/strong> lay ahead. At first we rode past beautiful beaches with turquoise water and felt the urge to stop constantly. <strong>At a petrol station we sat on plastic chairs, leisurely enjoying espressos and croissants, in no rush at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know how we got so carried away, but the mistake dawned on us after we&#8217;d been climbing non-stop for two hours. No matter how much we wished for a downhill stretch around every bend, all we got was <strong>an even steeper climb with a 10% gradient.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-55161\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"949\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/vyslap-na-kole-albanie.jpg\" alt=\"Cycling uphill in Albania\" class=\"wp-image-55161\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A well-deserved photo after the climb<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>We had to charge our <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Baterky\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/baterky\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">batteries<\/a> before the summit and didn&#8217;t reach the top until after sunset. The temperature had dropped from 40\u00b0C to near freezing, and for the first time all summer we pulled out our jackets. Although we <strong>had a few critical moments along the way, with locals even offering to drive us to our destination<\/strong>, we made it. We tried literally everything, and mapy.cz was the most accurate. <strong>In Albania, you also need to rely on common sense<\/strong> \u2014 new roads are being built, but not as quickly as you&#8217;d need them to be.<\/p>\n<p>We therefore don&#8217;t recommend inventing shortcuts unless you have bikes suitable for rough dirt tracks. <strong>A shortcut in Albania is always a bad idea.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Albania_Safe_for_Cyclists\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Albania_Safe_for_Cyclists\"><\/span>Is Albania Safe for Cyclists?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>No, it&#8217;s not dangerous \u2014 we were surprised by <strong>how considerate Albanian drivers are.<\/strong> While our friends who travelled Albania by car complained that Albanians drive &#8220;like maniacs,&#8221; towards <strong>us they behaved far better than drivers in Croatia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, Albanians themselves cycle a lot \u2014 Shkoder itself is packed with cyclists! If we hadn&#8217;t been fair-haired and loaded with panniers, we would have blended right in. As elsewhere in Europe, it was occasionally unstable, but nothing that couldn&#8217;t be solved with mobile data. Plus, it cost just \u20ac13 per night for both of us. <strong>In Dhermi we camped at <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"The Sea Turtle Camp\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/the-sea-turtle-camp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer sponsored\">The Sea Turtle Camp<\/a><\/strong>, which has mountain views and is just a short walk from the beach. It&#8217;s nothing luxurious, but it does the job.
