We travelled by trains and buses with nothing but our backpacks. What we saw, how much it cost, and a detailed itinerary so you can replicate our journey \u2014 you&#8217;ll find it all right here in this article.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span justify;\">We started our trip in Krakow, Poland. You can easily reach Krakow by bus or train \u2014 for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flixbus.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FlixBus<\/a> runs regular connections from many European cities. The bus station is centrally located, so everything is within walking distance.<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you arrive during rush hour, we wouldn&#8217;t recommend taking a taxi \u2014 it took us just as long by cab as it did walking the same route the next day on foot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We recommend staying at <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"BC 29 Residence\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/bc-29-residence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-shortcode=\"true\">BC 29 Residence<\/a>, a beautiful space near the centre where a room costs around \u20ac52 including a (luxurious) breakfast.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51561\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51561\" style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51561\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/20180131-IMG_1800.jpg\" alt=\"Our first destination: Krakow\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51561\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our first destination: Krakow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After arriving in the afternoon, we managed to walk through the royal <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wawel_Castle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wawel Castle<\/a> and we highly recommend visiting <a href=\"http:\/\/mocak.pl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MOCAK<\/a> \u2014 the Museum of Contemporary Art housed in the former factory of Oskar Schindler.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Krakow_in_Half_a_Day\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Krakow_in_Half_a_Day\"><\/span>Krakow in Half a Day<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For dinner, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/placnowy1.pl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plac Nowy 1<\/a> \u2014 it&#8217;s close to the accommodation and they serve excellent pizza. Make sure to try one of their local beers.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">We covered the historic centre in a single morning, all on foot, so if you don&#8217;t mind a lot of walking, you won&#8217;t need to spend money on public transport tickets.<\/div>\n<p>After lunch, we slowly made our way towards the Polish Tatra Mountains, heading to the ski village of Zakopane. From Krakow, you can reach Zakopane by <a href=\"http:\/\/polskibus.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bus for about 19.5 PLN per person<\/a> (around \u20ac4.50) and the journey takes just over two hours.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Zakopane\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Zakopane\"><\/span>Zakopane<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">People come to Zakopane mainly for skiing, so the village is full of charming villas with all the amenities and stunning views of the Tatra Mountains in Poland.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Buses and trains arrive and depart from the same location, and there&#8217;s also a luggage storage facility, so no complicated searching around.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our accommodation at <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"Villa 11 Folk\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/villa-11-folk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Villa 11 Folk &amp; Design<\/a> had, besides a charming atmosphere, a meditation room with loungers, a sauna, and a dining area where small treats, tea, and coffee were available 24\/7. The room cost around \u20ac80 including breakfast.<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51632\" style=\"width: 1800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/20180202-IMG_1611.jpg\" alt=\"A villa in Zakopane\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1011\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A villa in Zakopane<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_Do_in_Zakopane\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_Do_in_Zakopane\"><\/span>Things to Do in Zakopane<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can go shopping in the centre, check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g274793-d8762228-Reviews-Upside_Down_House_Dom_Do_Gory_Nogami-Zakopane_Lesser_Poland_Province_Southern_Pol.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Upside Down House<\/a>, or set off very early in the morning for a hike to what is said to be the most beautiful mountain lake in Europe \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morskie_Oko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morskie Oko<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We had terrible weather, so we ended up in a caf\u00e9 instead.<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_to_Slovakia\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_to_Slovakia\"><\/span>Getting to Slovakia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get to your next destination, Tatransk\u00e1 Bystrica on the Slovak side of the Tatra Mountains, you need to cross the border \u2014 and this is where things get tricky. Only three Leo Express minibuses cross the border per day, and they don&#8217;t go through Zakopane. You need to get to Doln\u00ed Bukowina first, where you transfer to Leo Express.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Especially in winter, be careful \u2014 the 15 km local bus ride from Zakopane to Doln\u00ed Bukowina might look like it takes 25 minutes, but we ended up travelling for over two hours due to traffic jams and heavy snowfall, and ultimately had to spend an unplanned extra night on the Polish side.<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51569\" style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51569 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/20180203-IMG_1987-2.jpg\" alt=\"At this point we knew we wouldn&#039;t see the Tatras that day\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trekking to the bus stop, 5 km<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>These local Polish bus rides can&#8217;t be booked in advance (they work more like city buses), cost 5 PLN (about \u20ac1.20), and our driver left 5 minutes early, so be warned.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leoexpress.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leo Express<\/a> ride itself from Doln\u00ed Bukowina to Tatransk\u00e1 Bystrica (or all the way to Poprad) costs \u20ac12 per person.<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tatranska_Bystrica_Poprad\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tatranska_Bystrica_Poprad\"><\/span>Tatransk\u00e1 Bystrica \/ Poprad<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main reason to head to the Slovak side of the Tatra Mountains is Lomnick\u00fd \u0160t\u00edt \u2014 one of the Tatra Mountains&#8217; highest peaks. You get to the top via two cable cars, and you need to book your ticket for the upper one in advance. Well, you don&#8217;t <em>have<\/em> to, but you might not get a spot in time, or the day could sell out completely, making the trip pointless. The ticket costs \u20ac44 per person. You can buy it at <a href=\"http:\/\/gopass.sk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gopass.sk<\/a> and the departure point is directly in Tatransk\u00e1 Bystrica.<\/div>\n<div>If you get stuck in Poland an extra day, like we did, you&#8217;ll lose your reservation and won&#8217;t be able to reschedule it.<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trip_to_Lomnicky_Stit\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trip_to_Lomnicky_Stit\"><\/span>Trip to Lomnick\u00fd \u0160t\u00edt<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">You should set aside at least half a day for the cable car ride to Lomnick\u00fd \u0160t\u00edt. You can either stay directly in Tatransk\u00e1 Bystrica, which will cost at least \u20ac80, or continue to Poprad (about 30 minutes longer on Leo Express), stay there for example at <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"Penzion Darinka\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/doporucujeme\/penzion-darinka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Penzion Darinka<\/a> for half the price, and take the tram to Tatransk\u00e1 Bystrica the next morning (the <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Fare Bare - d\u011btsk\u00e9 barefoot\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/fare-bare-detske-barefoot\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">fare<\/a> is just a few cents).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you leave Poprad before eight in the morning and board the cable car by eleven at the latest, you&#8217;ll easily catch the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zssk.sk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">afternoon train at 14:43<\/a> from Tatransk\u00e1 Lomnica to Bratislava. That costs about \u20ac16 per person.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you&#8217;re a student and want to travel around Slovakia for free, you need to get a special card at any train station in Slovakia. You&#8217;ll need a filled-in form confirmed by your university&#8217;s student office.<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bratislava\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bratislava\"><\/span>Bratislava<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bratislava is a beautiful but pricier city. It&#8217;s definitely worth checking Airbnb well in advance \u2014 you can find a place near the centre for around \u20ac40. We stayed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/rooms\/12737641\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom\u00e1\u0161&#8217;s place<\/a> and we highly recommend his apartment \u2014 it&#8217;s rare to find such a cosy and well-equipped flat at a fair price. Hotels, on the other hand, can easily cost three times as much.
