Read on and discover Aveiro and its surroundings with me.   <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Aveiro, the second-largest city in the Centro region with approximately 80,000 inhabitants, may not be among Portugal&#8217;s most famous tourist destinations<\/strong>, but it is definitely worth a visit. Manuel Firmino Market<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>Just like in other cities in Portugal (and Spain), in Aveiro you&#8217;ll find a market where you can buy local tangerines, olives, or other seasonal fruits and vegetables. <strong>But you can also taste some traditional delicacies here, such as fish and seafood specialties.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Among the most famous dishes are <em>Caldeirada de Enguias<\/em> (stewed eel soup) and <em>Caldeirada de Petinga<\/em> (stewed sardines). Also often served are <em>enguias de escabeche<\/em> (marinated eels) and <em>raia em molho pitau<\/em> (skate in pitau sauce). Also popular are <em>espetadas de mexilh\u00e3o<\/em> (mussel skewers)\u200b.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Aveiro is also famous for its sweets called <em>ovos moles<\/em>, which are delicate confections made from egg yolks and sugar. Infante Dom Pedro City Park<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>This park was once a garden, considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Originally, there was a field here that belonged to the Monastery of Saint Anthony<\/strong>, where monks cultivated the land. <strong>The rest of the land was sold in 1842 by the first Viscount of Saint Anthony, Pedro Ant\u00f3nio Rebocho. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p>In 1861, the then-president of Aveiro, Firmino Maia, decided to transform \u201cCampo de Santo Ant\u00f3nio\u201d into a public park.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 1919, this area was expanded thanks to Dr. Louren\u00e7o Peixinho, who purchased adjacent plots and enabled the creation of new attractions, such as a colonnade with a double staircase, a tea house with a library, and a terrace overlooking the lake. <\/p>\n\n<p>The park gained its popular name due to the cages with monkeys and birds that were once housed here. <strong>Today, the park is a green oasis, a place to escape the hot summer days. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"gyg-iframe-container\" style=\"margin-bottom:1.5em\"><iframe style=\"border:0;height:100%;width:100%\" title=\"GetYourGuide activities widget\" src=\"https:\/\/widget.getyourguide.com\/default\/activities.frame?widget=wp_activities&amp;currency=CSK&amp;locale_code=en-GB&amp;number_of_items=3&amp;partner_id=MKZ64IS&amp;q=aveiro\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Ze_Penicheiro_Tile_Panel\"><\/span>7. Z\u00e9 Penicheiro Tile Panel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>A short distance from the University of Aveiro, you&#8217;ll find a large panel made of traditional Portuguese tiles \u2013 azulejos \u2013 by the artist Z\u00e9 Penicheiro.<strong> This artistic creation symbolizes the historical and academic development of the university. <\/strong>The year of the university&#8217;s founding, 1973, is displayed at the bottom of the panel, which is more visible in photos than when you walk by. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>This panel is likely the only publicly displayed work by Z\u00e9 Penicheiro in Aveiro.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro.jpg\" alt=\"Aveiro\" class=\"wp-image-88915\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro.jpg 800w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-700x466.jpg 700w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Chapel_of_Sao_Goncalinho\"><\/span>8. Chapel of S\u00e3o Gon\u00e7alinho<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>In the picturesque Beira Mar district of Aveiro, you&#8217;ll find the beautiful Chapel of S\u00e3o Gon\u00e7alo, also known as Capela de S\u00e3o Gon\u00e7alinho. <\/strong>This chapel, built in 1714, captivates with its unique hexagonal structure and elegant dome covered with traditional blue and white tiles, known as azulejos.  <strong>In 2011, it was designated as a monument of public interest. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The chapel is also the center of annual celebrations in honor of Saint Gon\u00e7alo. <\/strong>The city&#8217;s residents fulfill their vows by throwing traditional cookies called <em>cavacas<\/em> from the dome into the crowd. (When someone asks Saint Gon\u00e7alo for help or intervention \u2013 for example, for healing, protection, or success in love \u2013 they often promise to perform some ritual or gesture of gratitude after their request is fulfilled.) <\/p>\n\n<p>The festival also includes a symbolic handover of a floral wreath to future festival organizers and the traditional \u201cDance of the Lame,\u201d during which men pretend to limp and dance to folk songs. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" src=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-3-1-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"Aveiro Museum\" class=\"wp-image-88990\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-3-1-700x467.jpg 700w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-3-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-3-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-3-1-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/aveiro-3-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Aveiro_Museum\"><\/span>9. Aveiro Museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>The Museu de Aveiro, also known as the Museu de Santa Joana, is a rather impressive museum housed in the former Convent of Jesus (Convento de Jesus). <strong>Among the main exhibits are: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tomb of Princess Joana<\/strong>: A richly decorated baroque tombstone made of multicolored marble, a work by the royal architect Jo\u00e3o Antunes. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Church of Jesus (Igreja de Jesus)<\/strong>: A church with rich golden decoration and Portuguese azulejos, considered an excellent example of baroque decoration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cloister and Refectory<\/strong>: Spaces with original architectural <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Elements Hotel&amp;Spa\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/elements-hotelspa\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">elements<\/a>, including a reading tribune and walls covered with azulejos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM. Art Nouveau Museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve read more of my articles, you know I don&#8217;t miss anything related to art. Best Restaurants and Cafes in Aveiro<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re wondering where to go for coffee or a good meal in Aveiro, we have a few tips for you. The food at <strong>Balance FitFood Aveiro<\/strong> was absolutely excellent; I&#8217;m glad we stumbled upon this bistro during our walk. <\/p>\n\n<p>But don&#8217;t get coffee there; if you want an excellent flat white or latte, go to <strong>Porta do caf\u00e9<\/strong> or <strong>Monlou, Cake and Coffee House<\/strong>. Visit a Local Products Shop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>I was lucky enough to overhear a local guide telling tourists: &#8220;If you want to buy something truly Portuguese, go here.&#8221;<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>A wonderful little shop where you&#8217;ll find clothes, bags, plates, mugs, bath salts, soaps, and even small rugs that were made in Portugal.<\/strong> In short, it&#8217;s an ideal place to buy a souvenir, and it&#8217;s not ridiculously overpriced either.<strong> And what&#8217;s its name? Costa Nova Beach<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>And last but not least. <strong>The place we went to Aveiro for. Costa Nova, located only about 12 km from Aveiro, <\/strong> is a small seaside paradise known for its iconic wooden houses \u2013 <em>palheiros<\/em>, whose colorful stripes immediately catch the eye. <\/p>\n\n<p>They used to serve as storage for fishing equipment; today, you&#8217;ll find shops, restaurants, and accommodation in them.
