While there isn&#8217;t an abundance of attractions, those you&#8217;ll find here are definitely worth seeing. <strong> Let&#8217;s discover together what to do and see in Loul\u00e9.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Loule_Castle\"><\/span>Loul\u00e9 Castle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cm-loule.pt\/pt\/150\/castelo-de-loule.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Castle of Loul\u00e9<\/a><\/strong> dates back to the 2nd century. It has Roman origins and was later occupied by the Moors until it was finally conquered by D. Paio Peres Correia in 1249.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Afonso III fortified and expanded it in the 13th century, and the castle even hosted the Portuguese royal family. Although damaged by an earthquake in 1969, parts of it remain preserved and are now integrated into the town of Loul\u00e9, protected as part of the national heritage. Duarte Jos\u00e9 Pacheco (1900-1943), a native of Loul\u00e9, was an outstanding electrical engineer and held key public positions, including director of the Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico and Minister of Education and Public Works. His influence is still evident today, for example, in the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Pacheco tragically died in a car accident at the age of 43. <strong>In his honor, the city of Loul\u00e9 unveiled the monument on November 16, 1953, ten years after his death. <\/strong> This 17-meter-high column, designed by architect Cristino da Silva and funded by public subscription, symbolizes Pacheco&#8217;s unfinished work.<\/p>\n\n<p>A bronze relief by Leopoldo de Almeida and 18 panels by various sculptors adorn the monument, celebrating Pacheco&#8217;s legacy and serving as a significant symbol of the Estado Novo period in the Algarve.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portugalbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Engineer-Duarte-Pachecos-Monument-700x394.jpg\" alt=\"What to see in Loul&#xE9;? After the 1755 earthquake, it was restored with a new Rococo altar. <\/p>\n\n<p>The sanctuary is also famous for two major religious festivals, Festa Pequena and Festa Grande, which celebrate the revered \u201cSovereign Mother\u201d. The chapel&#8217;s rich history includes a statue likely from the 16th century and paintings of the Passion of Christ by Jos\u00e9 Filipe Porf\u00edrio from the 19th c<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" Costa Arag\u00e3o and became a symbol of the esteemed Lobo family.<\/p>\n\n<p>After several obstacles and almost a century later, the chapel was completed by Ant\u00f3nio <strong>Jos\u00e9 de Matos Mexia Costa, who magnificently renovated it with his family between 1891 and 1893.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>In the 20th century, this elegant building served as a refuge for Spanish Jesuits during the civil war and later transformed into a vibrant center for community and cultural activities, from carnival balls to music and dance performances. <\/p>\n\n<p>Following extensive renovations between 2017 and 2019, the palace now serves as a dynamic center for Loul\u00e9 Criativo, promoting local identity through various creative and educational activities. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Loul\u00e9 Municipal Museum<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>The museum is quite modern and features fascinating exhibits that tell the story of this area from the Triassic period, when giant salamanders lived here, to the Middle Ages. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p>Among the most significant artifacts are the oldest preserved records from the municipal council in Portugal, dating back to 1384.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" Matriz De S\u00e3o Clemente<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>The <strong>Church of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cm-loule.pt\/pt\/146\/igreja-matriz-de-sao-clemente---loule.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-schema-attribute=\"mentions\">S\u00e3o Clemente,<\/a> <\/strong>whose origins date back to the 13th century, was likely founded by the Archbishop of Braga, D. Jo\u00e3o Viegas, and in 1298 came under the Military Order of S\u00e3o Tiago. Its Gothic southern architecture features three naves and simple decoration on the capitals.  <\/p>\n\n<p>In the 16th century, side chapels and altars were added, but these were removed in the 18th century.  <strong> The church suffered damage during the 1755 earthquake and subsequent tremors, thus undergoing significant reconstruction that emphasized its medieval <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Elements Hotel&amp;Spa\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/elements-hotelspa\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">elements<\/a>.<\/strong> In 1924, it was declared a national monument.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fonte_Do_Cadoico\"><\/span>Fonte Do Cadoi\u00e7o<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>You might be surprised to find a waterfall in Loul\u00e9. <strong>It&#8217;s called Fonte do Cadoi\u00e7o, and even though it&#8217;s just a short distance from the main road, not everyone manages to find it,<\/strong> because the access is subtly located between two buildings on a picturesque cobbled street.<\/p>\n\n<p>The waterfall is not very well maintained, there&#8217;s a lot of trash, and it&#8217;s more of a curiosity that you find it in the city rather than something you truly need to visit. We went there for a cup of coffee and also had their local coconut bundt cake (they call it a cake \ud83d\ude01).  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Caf\u00e9 Calcinha is a historical gem in the center of Loul\u00e9. It opened in 1929 thanks to Jos\u00e9 Domingos Cavaco, nicknamed \u201cCalcinha\u201d. The interior was designed to reflect the grandeur of a Brazilian caf\u00e9 from the 20th   century. <\/p>\n\n<p>During your visit, don&#8217;t forget to notice the Art Deco <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Elements Hotel&amp;Spa\" href=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/en\/doporucujeme\/elements-hotelspa\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">elements<\/a> and Brazilian woodworking craftsmanship, <strong>which have been carefully preserved.
