This castle dates back to the 10th century during the <strong>Muslim occupation of Gharb al-Andalus.<\/strong> Archaeological evidence suggests that the site has been inhabited since the Iron Age.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The castle holds the distinction of being the last in the Algarve to fall to Christian forces in 1249, during the reign of King Afonso III.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Wander around the site, soak up the local history, and admire the breathtaking views from the top. When I first saw it from a distance, I thought it depicted a man eating a fish. It began as a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony, survived a major earthquake, and served as the main church until 1809.   <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>In 1995, it underwent a thorough renovation and was transformed into the Museum of Saint Anthony. <\/strong>It was opened in 1998, and now we can all enjoy a piece of history right in the heart of Aljezur.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Igreja_Misericordia\"><\/span>Igreja Miseric\u00f3rdia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>This old church is a testament to Aljezur&#8217;s deeply rooted religious history. Manuel Francisco <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>At the Municipal Museum in Aljezur, you&#8217;ll find a rather interesting collection of artifacts, though don&#8217;t expect anything grand. The visit is great, mainly thanks to the staff, who are absolutely passionate about what the museum offers. However, I had a lot of fun taking photos in the nearby surroundings.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portugalbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Aljezur-4580-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"View from ponte de Aljezur\" class=\"wp-image-853\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Igreja_Matriz_De_Aljezur\"><\/span>Igreja Matriz De Aljezur<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>While exploring Aljezur, you will also come across the main local church, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitalgarve.pt\/en\/433\/igreja-matriz-de-aljezur-aljezur-main-church.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Igreja Matriz de Aljezur, or Aljezur Main Church<\/a><\/strong>. This church was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake in 1755.<strong> The original medieval Gothic-style building was so damaged that Bishop Dom Francisco Gomes de Avelar sponsored the construction of a new main church for the town<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p>The church we see today was constructed at the end of the 18th century, with its completion in the 19th century in a neoclassical style. It features three naves, a chancel, two chancel chapels, and two side chapels.    <strong>In the chancel, there is a remarkable early 19th-century altar, which includes an exceptional statue of the town&#8217;s patroness, Nossa Senhora da Alva (Our Lady of Dawn). <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>What is particularly fascinating is that, in addition to the neoclassical side altars, the church also preserves several Mannerist paintings from the old main church.<strong> Another significant artifact is a 16th-century statue of S\u00e3o Sebasti\u00e3o (Saint Sebastian), which testifies to the rich history of this religious site. <\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portugalbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/aljezur.jpg\" alt=\"Igreja Matriz de Aljezur, or Aljezur Main Church\" class=\"wp-image-811\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/aljezur.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/aljezur-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/aljezur-700x467.jpg 700w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/aljezur-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loudavymkrokem.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/aljezur-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Igreja Matriz de Aljezur, Aljezur main church<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Camara_Municipal_De_Aljezur\"><\/span>C\u00e2mara Municipal De Aljezur<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>When crossing the Ponte de Aljezur bridge towards Igreja Matriz de Aljezur, you will come across the C\u00e2mara Municipal de Aljezur.<strong> At first glance, this building might seem a bit out of place in Aljezur&#8217;s historic atmosphere.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>It has neither a distinctly modern nor an ancient appearance, and initially, you might not find it particularly interesting. <strong>However, the unique aspect of this building is revealed when viewed from above: it has a star-shaped design, which adds an unexpected and interesting architectural detail to the town&#8217;s landscape.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portugalbay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/aljezur-castle.jpg\" alt=\"C&#xE2;mara Municipal de Aljezur\" class=\"wp-image-810\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">C\u00e2mara Municipal de Aljezur<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Grab_a_Coffee_at_Koyo\"><\/span>Grab a Coffee at Koyo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>After exploring the historical sights, treat yourself to a coffee and a snack at <strong>Koyo<\/strong>, a cozy cafe with a pleasant atmosphere. It&#8217;s the perfect place for anyone who wants a proper flat white or for those who need a place to work on their laptop. <\/p>\n\n<p>As for restaurants in Aljezur, our favorite is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/kc3yUFgbWaMDEVSc6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tamrab Thai<\/a><\/strong>. Finding a good Thai restaurant in the Algarve can be difficult, so when we&#8217;re in this area, it&#8217;s our go-to spot.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Another fantastic place is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/Gv9YHXzHDYg5VnP36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arte Bianca,<\/a><\/strong> and we mustn&#8217;t forget <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/FPwXquiesF5edkPt9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roots<\/a><\/strong>. Roots is known for its open kitchen and many vegan options.
