On a sandy strip between the sea and forested hills, lies a city that has earned the nickname “Polish Monte Carlo”. Sopot – an elegant resort with an aristocratic soul – will charm you not only with its majestic wooden pier stretching into the sea, but also with an atmosphere that is a blend of spa nostalgia and modern seaside life.
This city, with a mere forty thousand inhabitants, boasts a history dating back to the 13th century, when it was mentioned as “Sopoth” in documents of the Cistercian monastery in Oliva. From an original fishing settlement, it transformed over centuries into an exclusive destination, attracting wealthy merchants from nearby Gdańsk and later European nobility seeking seaside relaxation.
Today, Sopot, along with industrial Gdynia and historic Gdańsk, forms a unique agglomeration called the Tri-City, offering the best of the Polish coast. While neighboring cities represent commercial and cultural centers, Sopot remains an oasis of relaxation, where life in the summer months spills from romantic promenades onto lively beaches and from elegant cafes into vibrant nightclubs.

When to Visit Sopot
The best time to visit Sopot is undoubtedly from May to September, when you can fully enjoy the beautiful weather and sandy beaches. The summer months, especially July and August, are the peak of the tourist season, when temperatures reach a pleasant 22-27°C. During this time, the beaches are lively, restaurants and bars have open terraces, and the city hosts numerous cultural events, including the famous Sopot International Music Festival.
If you prefer a quieter atmosphere and lower prices, consider visiting in May, June, or September. The weather is still warm enough for beach walks and the sea has a pleasant temperature for swimming, but there are significantly fewer tourists than during the high season.
The winter season in Sopot also has its charm. The city is surrounded by beautiful nature, which takes on a completely different character in winter. A walk on the snow-covered pier with a view of the frozen Bay of Gdańsk can be an unexpectedly romantic experience. Temperatures in winter range around 0-5°C, but due to the city’s seaside location, the weather is often damp and windy.

Tips and Tricks for Your Vacation
Don’t Overpay for Flights
Search for flights on Kayak. It’s our favorite search engine because it scans the websites of all airlines and always finds the cheapest connection.
Book Your Accommodation Smartly
The best experiences we’ve had when looking for accommodation (from Alaska to Morocco) are with Booking.com, where hotels, apartments, and entire houses are usually the cheapest and most widely available.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Good travel insurance will protect you against illness, accidents, theft, or flight cancellations. We’ve had a few hospital visits abroad, so we know how important it is to have proper insurance arranged.
Where we insure ourselves: SafetyWing (best for everyone) and TrueTraveller (for extra-long trips).
Why don’t we recommend any Czech insurance company? Because they have too many restrictions. They set limits on the number of days abroad, travel insurance via a credit card often requires you to pay medical expenses only with that card, and they frequently limit the number of returns to the Czech Republic.
