What are the Polish Maldives and where to Find Them

The Polish Maldives are not just one place, as it might seem. This name is used for two different locations in Poland, which, thanks to their clear water and footbridge, remotely resemble an exotic paradise. And the Poles themselves even wrote it on a sign. 😁

Gródek Park

Gródek Park in Jaworzno

The original and best-known “Polish Maldives” can be found in Gródek Park in the city of Jaworzno, which is located approximately 1.5 hours’ drive from Ostrava. When you arrive, even the signs say “Malediwy”. Don’t expect anything huge, though it’s a nice walk and a very pleasant trip.

This park was created on the site of a former dolomite quarry, which was flooded and reclaimed. Since 2019, it has been accessible to the public and has become a tourist sensation.

Gródek Park covers an area of 58.54 hectares, and its dominant features are two azure lakes – Wydra and Orka. It is precisely their incredibly clear water with a distinct turquoise color that resembles the exotic Maldives. In addition to the water bodies, you will also find many other natural habitats here, such as thermophilic grasslands, meadows, rocky biotopes, wetlands, and forests.

A characteristic feature is a winding wooden footbridge leading across Lake Wydra, which you can walk along. When the water level is high, the footbridge goes below its surface, allowing you to dip your feet and walk through the small lake.

It’s a walk of about an hour at most, even with taking photos, so be sure to plan trips to nearby towns if you’re coming from further away.

Zakrzówek Park in Krakow

The newer “Polish Maldives” can be found in Zakrzówek Park in the city of Krakow. It is a former limestone quarry that has been transformed into a recreational oasis. The site features five pools of varying depths, suitable for both swimmers and non-swimmers.

Zakrzówek was only opened in 2023 and quickly gained great popularity. To some visitors, it resembles Croatia more than the Maldives, thanks to the high rock cliffs that surround it.

Polish Maldives: when is the Best Time to Visit

You can visit the Polish Maldives year-round, but of course, you’ll have the best experience in the summer months, when you can fully enjoy the beauty and atmosphere of these places.

  • Gródek Park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Access is free.
  • Zakrzówek Park has an official season from mid-June to early September. Entry is limited; a maximum of 1000 people can be there at one time. Entry is only permitted during lifeguard shifts, which are from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

If you want to visit Zakrzówek, locals recommend going early in the morning and queuing up before the turnstiles. First come, first served for swimming. For those unsuccessful in gaining entry to the pools, it is possible to swim directly in the quarry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tips and Tricks for Your Vacation

Don’t Overpay for Flights

Search for flights on Kayak. It’s our favorite search engine because it scans the websites of all airlines and always finds the cheapest connection.

Book Your Accommodation Smartly

The best experiences we’ve had when looking for accommodation (from Alaska to Morocco) are with Booking.com, where hotels, apartments, and entire houses are usually the cheapest and most widely available.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Good travel insurance will protect you against illness, accidents, theft, or flight cancellations. We’ve had a few hospital visits abroad, so we know how important it is to have proper insurance arranged.

Where we insure ourselves: SafetyWing (best for everyone) and TrueTraveller (for extra-long trips).

Why don’t we recommend any Czech insurance company? Because they have too many restrictions. They set limits on the number of days abroad, travel insurance via a credit card often requires you to pay medical expenses only with that card, and they frequently limit the number of returns to the Czech Republic.

Find the Best Experiences

Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can book guided walks, trips, skip-the-line tickets, tours, and much more. We always find some extra fun there!
